Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes in Bird Box (2018) dir. Susanne Bier
hi! thank you for your bird box rec and after watching it i agree with a lot of what you said went wrong - especially the pacing. it's an enjoyable movie but the more you think about it the less it sustains criticism. you mentioned that "sandra has moments of genius towards the end", could you expand a little bit on the acting choices she made that you thought were good? i love reading your thoughts!
I mean...I don't know there's a lot to expand on. I genuinely think watching all the present day scenes from the moment she has to tell the kids one of them is going to have to look and that she was the one who was going to make the choice all the way up to when they reach their safe haven (I'm not a fan of the stuff inside the school for the blind) are incredibly solid acting. It's even more so when you know that they actually shot all those scenes really blindfolded. Sandra can't see in any of the scenes she's wearing the blindfold throughout the whole movie. In the climax of the movie she is carrying those kids through the forest blindly. I think that obviously helps a lot to get in character which ultimately leads to a better performance. It's not the same when you hear someone like Lizzie Olsen explaining how they shot Godzilla and it was basically "Well, just imagine a giant dinosaur looking fuck running behind you. And...action!". Here Sandra doesn't need to imagine. She can really immerse herself in the fact that she can't use one of her most important senses while desperately trying to find way to safety because she literally can't see where she's going. When you put a good actor in a very similar condition to what their character is going through they're going to shine.
