Egg Week

Scav hunt #84: The Bond character of your choice or your own Station character is participating in the Great British Bake Off. What is the theme week, and what do they make for their Signature, the Technical, and the Showstopper? Include recipes. I've linked to recipes with the exception of the family recipe and the modified version that they would receive for technicals.

Geoffrey Boothroyd’s recipes

Signature: 

“This week is a celebration of eggs. For your first challenge, please bake for us something that relies on the unique flavor and properties of eggs.”

Boothroyd went for a tried and true classic: angel food cake. The cake was basic, something he could practically make in his sleep as it was a family favorite. What would set it apart was the frosting. It used the tropical flavors of pineapple and cherry to offset the sweetness of the cake. And just for this occasion, he also added a dash of coconut flavoring into the angel food cake itself.

Ingredients

1/2 c sugar

1/2 c water

1 9oz can crushed pineapple

1 pkg cherry gelatin

1 pint whipped cream (2 cups) (Best if home made)

Directions

Combine sugar, water, pineapple, and gelatin in medium saucepan

Bring to a boil. Simmer for 10min, stirring occasionally

Chill till partially set

Whip and fold whipped cream into gelatin mixture

Spread generously on cake

Chill at least 4 hours or overnight

Technical:

“This week you must make the perfect scrambled eggs and toast. The eggs should be slightly moist and the toast should be sturdy enough to support them.”

Honestly, the eggs were the easy part of this recipe. They came out more moist than Boothroyd himself preferred but he remembered what they said and errs on the side of not overcooking. It took more work to get the bread to rise just right and not forget to actually make the eggs when the bread was nearly done baking.

Eggs

12 fresh eggs

Salt and pepper

5-6 oz. of fresh butter

Herbs

Make scrambled eggs. Serve on hot buttered toast in individual copper dishes with pink champagne.

Bread

    1 package active dry yeast

    3 tablespoons plus 1/2 teaspoon sugar

    2-1/4 cups warm water

    1 tablespoon salt

    6-1/4 to 6-3/4 cups bread flour

    2 tablespoons canola oil

Combine yeast and sugar in water. Combine remaining ingredients until a soft dough is formed. Knead and let rise. Shape into two loaf pans. Rise. Bake. 

Showstopper:

“Your theme is illusion baking. Whether it's a chocolate egg sculpture, or a fake English breakfast with eggs on toast, you must present an egg that is not an egg.”

Boothroyd found this recipe when digging through some old cookbooks at the library. It didn’t come with a photo, but once he made it he was satisfied that the Spiegeleierkuchen would do the trick, especially when paired with bacon shortbread.

Scav Hunt #29: Create a title and summary for a Bond fic that you don't actually intend to write. This is permission to create a WIP for the sole purpose of abandoning it!

I have so many of these, it was hard to pick just one. Just for fun, there's additional ideas below the cut.

The Get-Along Halloween Costume

The annual MI6 Halloween party has become the most fun event of the work social calendar. People go all out in their costumes and group costumes are especially popular. About ten of them have decided to all go for different video game characters and it is a mix of closet cosplay and serious fabrication projects. Q and James had landed somewhat in between with bulky but simple versions of pacman and one of the ghosts.

It was a fun idea in August, and a great idea now because it gave Q an excuse to avoid James, who had been giving him the cold shoulder for the last three weeks for no discernible reason. Or at least that had been the plan.

At the last minute, Eve reveals a crucial piece of the costume: a rod holding the signature white dots of the game. A rod ensuring Q and Bond were attached with only three feet between them. A rod that Eve clearly got help designing because it interfered with the fastening of their costumes so neither could escape without coming to Eve and getting her to do it, which she said she wouldn't do until they sorted themselves out. It was going to be a long night.

Okay, additional details because I have given this a lot of thought.

Prior conflict

Bond was eavesdropping via Eve’s intercom on a meeting in M’s office and thought he heard Q underestimating him/slagging him off/generally being disparaging about Bond to their superior

Now Bond is mad at Q because he though they had mutual trust and respect for each other, so he’s avoiding Q and acting cold

Q doesn’t know why the sudden cold shoulder and thinks Bond must hate him now

Generally have both been very short and snappy with each other and it’s gotten on everyone’s nerves

Eve realises what Bond overheard and that he missed the context and that wasn’t what Q was saying

Party happenings

They have to work together to avoid someone they mutually dislike

Recognising that any pictures are potential blackmail, they have to agree to act like this was their idea

Perhaps get sucked into being the bar for an impromptu limbo game

The pacman/ghost costumes are like big foam type costumes where its pretty inflexible anyway and there are arm holes on the side. For Q in the ghost costume, there's just mesh for the ghost eyes he can see out of, but if he wants to have anything to drink, he pretty much has to grab it half-blind through the arm hole and bring it inside the costume. The eye of pacman does have a hole so Bond has a better visual and his right arm has a decent amount of freedom of movement through pacman's open mouth area if he needs to, but there's no corresponding hole for his left arm. Honestly they were going to be uncomfortable costumes anyway, but they lost a bet.

My villain lair

Scav hunt #46: From underground caverns to blooming gardens; villain lairs come in all styles. What would your Station character's lair look like if they were a villain?

As is, perhaps predictable, xX_Subterranian_Xx would have an underground villain lair. Who needs WiFi when you have fiber optic cables with more powerful internet speeds. Everything is hard wired and that's okay. 

Despite being below ground, it has high ceilings and skylights to let in natural light. Light filtered through a shallow lake above so you can see fish saying above your head. The moonlight dancing on that walls is incredibly soothing at night. And, if you like, there is an elevator up to the top of the lighthouse which disguises the entrance and you can watch the stars above. 

The lighthouse keeper is an old friend who refuses to engage with anything digital and just knows Subterranean as an eccentric young lady called Terra (her parents must've been hippies).

The lair also comes equipped with a speaker system throughout the complex so music can be heard wherever she moves without needing to restart the playlist, and there's a movie room with a large projector and comfy recliners.

Unlike many villain lairs, it's on the smaller side. A little bigger than a ranch house and most of the rooms are bed chambers for guests so friends can stay late into the night.
