Skype a Scientist

Do you ever wonder what it’s like being a scientist?  

Do you have questions about what scientists actually do?

Have you ever met a scientist?

Skype a Scientist matches scientists with classrooms of any grade from around the country to answer any questions student might have!

Teachers:

The idea is we'd skype (or connect via google hangout) to your classroom and have an open discussion with your class. What we would talk about is dependent on what your students are interested in (e.g. what's it like being a scientist, what do scientists do for fun, are GMOs safe, are vaccines safe, is global warming real, do squid fart, whatever). The goal of the program is to have students across the country have positive experiences with scientists and see a scientist that is not the stereotypical white man with crazy white hair. If we can teach a little science in the process, that's an added bonus!

Currently, we have over 130 scientists from over 60 Universities around the world ready to talk to classrooms. Our specific areas of expertise run the gamut- bacteria, immune cells, sustainability, natural resource management, symbiosis, engineering, bioinformatics, oceanography, marine biology, aquaculture, evolution, birds, volcanoes, bats, plants, parasites you name it.

Skype sessions would be at least 30 minutes long but could also be tailored to your class length. In the form below you can request a topic you would like to cover or topics you are teaching that could be complemented with a Skype with a Scientist session. Once you have filled out the form and been matched with a scientist it will be up to you and your assigned scientist to determine a time and date that works for your classroom along with any specifics you would like covered.  Once you have these details sent we ask you to have your students prepare questions for the Skype session.

Our goal is for students to have a positive experience with a scientist! We aren’t looking for a scripted lecture here (there are plenty of those already online). Our goal is to provide an interactive experience for students and your goal is to get them excited about science. You can request to hold a session by yourself or with another scientist but once you are matched with a classroom it is up to you to make it your own! (Although we are here to help if you need it)

An article about mathematician Tim Gowers, and how he wrote on his blog that he (from the article at The Guardian): "...would decline to submit or review papers for any academic journal published by Elsevier, the largest publisher of scientific journals in the world."

I am sort of surprised that it took this long for anyone in the sciences to stand up to traditional publishing.  I thought that with the advent of the World Wide Web, one could publish one's papers by themselves.  I know there's a lot I don't get about the prestige or degree of trust afforded to peer reviewed papers in academic journals, but the advent of easy, DIY web publishing should have changed the economics of all this a long time ago.  Anyway, his blog post and the articles at both The Guardian and io9 are worth reading.  It's a glimpse into the meta-world surrounding the sciences.
