Sceneful 1.1
I looked down and grumbled softly as they called out my name. "Jas Yurik. Stole. Lied. Destroyed property. Laughed at Triaz. Resisted markings." Yeah. I knew who I was. I knew what I did. I wasn't proud of it, but at least I didn't kill anybody to get here. All those lies that I had told, all those secrets that I kept from my friends, they all came up in my mind as the Marker read off the next name.
The woman beside me was shaking in fear. I doubted that she was one of us who had broken the law to get marked. "Crai Rovenist," the Marker read. "Islander."
I figured as much. Most islanders didn't break the law. They simply existed, and with the failed uprising that started thanks to an islander, the scannings have gotten even more in depth. I, however, had somehow gotten out of all of the scannings without them even getting a hint of my heritage.
I was always scanned in as an unmarked or a due to be marked. They never realized that I was from the fifth of the islands. I was the only one still alive from that island, but that was a fact that I hoped would never get out. My entire life might end if even one person knew.
The Marker moved one while I tried to talk with the one person here who knew how powerful a secret can be.
"Hi," I started.
"H-hello," she replied.
"Not one for talking, or just scared of someone who's never killed a soul?" I teased.
"N-no. I mean yes. I mean, hello."
I wasn't going to get anywhere with her as long as fear was her main attribute, so I decided on a different approach. "Your body is truly a beautiful sight. I bet the men back home were always trying to flirt with you."
She blushed and quickly turned her head away. It was something, and she was probably my only hope at an ally while I waited for the markings to begin. I was sure that they'd be over quickly, but with everything that had gone on for the preparations, I wasn't exactly looking forward for the next three days.
"Crishim?" she asked, naming off the island I used to call home.
I growled softly and waited to be pushed into the large prison-like building we were going to live in during our markings before I answered her.
We were allowed to go into any room as long as we didn't bother any Markers or Triaz soldiers, so I found Crai's room and slammed the door behind myself. "Are you insane?!" I exclaimed. "If anyone heard you ask me that, I would have been killed instantly. That's where HE came from, the only island that has genetic loopholes, and you blab confidently that I might be from there."
She whimpered softly and sat on her bed, a soft comforter under her plump rear. "I'm sorry. Please don't hurt me."
I rolled my eyes and sat in her wooden chair, the only old looking thing in the room. "It's fine. Nobody heard. Just be more careful. I can't have people knowing that they missed one. I still value my life."
She nodded, and we talked on what we were going to do after the markings. She wanted to find a place that was free from Triaz, the fear of going to Crias, and from anyone who would care about the markings. I wanted to make that place.
Maybe it was the way that I explained everything, but Crai seemed very interested in not having to search the rest of her life for a place that probably didn't even exist. By the time the lights were cut off for the night, we already had a few good ideas planned out.
Hopefully, nobody would care that I was sleeping on her floor. It didn't matter anyway. If it all worked out, our tattoos will never be placed, and we'll be able to escape while skipping like little girls.
Sadly, I didn't think anything we had planned was going to happen, and if they did, they weren't going to be easy.

I thought I'd try a new idea out. This is based in my dystopian world, but it's only one of many story ideas that I'll be putting in this series. Not all of them will connect, but I'll keep on writing as long as I have stories to work on.
