The foliage of the deciduous climber Schizophragma hydrangeoides (Japanese hydrangea vine, climbing hydrangea) creates a display even when the summer sprays of small creamy-white flowers with white sterile florets have faded. The vigorous rusty-coloured woody stems cling to vertical surfaces using adventitious roots.

I just learned that there is a beautiful plant called Schizophragma! It's commonly called Japanese Hydrangea Vine. It attaches to and grows up vertical surfaces on its own and is unique for its jagged, heart-shaped leaves. This doesn't actually have anything to do with schizophrenia, but it could be another symbol we use in our flags or art.

The snake-like stems of the vigorous, large deciduous climber Schizophragma integrifolium (Chinese hydrangea vine). It climbs using aerial (adventitious) roots and has slender-pointed, ovate, leaves with showy flower-heads resembling lacecap hydrangeas, with large, bract-like outer florets surrounding inconspicuous flowers. Remember when designing with climbers how much space they occupy growing away from the wall.

Requiring plenty of space to perform Schizophragma integrifolium (Chinese hydrangea vine) needs a large tree or wall where the stems will attach by aerial roots. This vigorous, large deciduous climber produces inconspicuous flowers but these are surrounded by showy white ovate bracts.
