The vigorous Clematis terniflora (sweet autumn clematis) has covered this shed in autumnwith hundreds of small single, star-shaped, white flowers with a hawthorn-like fragrance. This plant is deciduous or semi-evergreen in mild winters and climbs using twisting petioles (leaf stalks).

Recently in London I spotted this white cloud of Clematis montana var. grandiflora (white anemone clematis) flowers. This is a vigorous large deciduous climber and will clamber over adjacent shrubs and trees attaching by means of a twisted petiole (leaf stalk).

The small yellow flowers of Clematis orientalis (Chinese clematis, orange peel clematis) are followed by these showy seed-heads. At first they resemble silken threads and later become more like downy feathers. This is a vigorous deciduous climber from Asia and Central Europe. In USA it has been classified as a noxious weed in some states where it has escaped from cultivation.

In winter these arches covered in the stems of Wisteria floribunda (Japanese wisteria) still help to create the formal structure for the garden and are covered with seasonal lights. This vigorous deciduous climber is covered in early summer with fragrant, pea-like, violet-blue, pink or white flowers in racemes. The flowers appear on the pruned side shoots known a ‘spurs’ which are created by cutting back the long extension growth.

Through the archway in the Taxus baccata (yew) hedge is the winter display of the scarlet seeds of the strong-growing deciduous climber Celastrus orbiculatus (oriental bittersweet). Earlier in the autumn the rounded leaves would have glowed with a butter-yellow. An hermaphrodite form is available, so that fruit can appear from a single plant. The plant requires a well-drained soil in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and needs a strong support structure as it is a vigorous climber. Introduced from East Asia this plant should be treated with caution as in the USA this species is considered invasive.

Cascading from this Betula pendula (silver birch) is the deciduous climber Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper). The foliage has five ovate leaflets that turn bright red and orange in the autumn. This plant will thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in partial shade or full shade.
