Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 30 Review - The Strongest Of All Mankind

This episode is mainly about world building in that it expands. While Himmel is ultimately the hero who’s saved the world from the Demon King, he isn’t the only hero. There are others out there, and the one focused in this one is known as The Hero of the South, also known as humanity’s strongest.

If you’re an anime-only, the Hero of the South is an interesting character. I think the intrigue of his character stems from his accomplishments and the marvel behind it all. He was considered the strongest of mankind, wielded two swords, and can also see into the future, yet he never once uses his powers for manipulation or selfishness. Despite knowing his demise, he comes to terms with it. The fact that it was the Hero who told Frieren about her imminent future of traveling with Himmel feels like it was him who had kickstarted that portion of her life in a way. His strength was pretty crazy if he was able to defeat several high ranking demons as Frieren and her party struggled with them. The fact that he has a bronze statue in a bustling village definitely shows that his actions had positive impact, even if history has forgotten about him. The lesson for this segment is that even if your actions will have impact towards one or several people, even if everyone else will forget.

The second segment also dives a bit into the world building—mostly pertaining towards demons. Demons have a tendency to steal Graf Dach’s heirloom sword, which originally belonged to a demon. Long ago, Frieren and her party once recovered the sword during his great-grandfather’s era. Although reluctant at first, Frieren decides to accept the request because Himmel wouldn’t abandon someone in need and she doesn’t want his efforts to be wasted.

The battle with the Sword Demon was so cool. It was nice to see the trio fight together. Stark protecting Fern and then deflecting the demon’s attacks was the highlight in all honesty. There is a reason why having a vanguard is necessary. Fern would’ve been heavily injured if he wasn’t there. Though, the battle ends quick as Frieren the Undertaker does her thing with Zoltraak. Demons are very scary as they don’t have to eat humans, but they want to. This demon takes advantage of the fact that people pray in graves to make her move. The moment when someone closes their eyes to start prayers is when they’re the most vulnerable. It’s kind of scary how calculating they are when it comes to human habits.

This episode also provided a few funny moments like Frieren stepping on a snake with Stark and Fern being scared in the background and Frieren actually wanting to stock up on supplies and leave the town as soon as possible. The animation quality is also good. I really liked how animated the puppets are. Madhouse could easily to an anime about puppeteering and I’d be entertained…as long as they aren’t outsourcing the CG to another company…

The Hero of the South is voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue, who voiced Yoriichi from Demon Slayer, Kakashi Hatake from Naruto and Nyanko-sensei from Natsume’s Book of Friends. You know he’s a prominent character when every other minor character in this episode aren’t voiced by a notable voice actor.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love to have a spell that would scratch the itchy parts of my back. That’s a super useful spell in my opinion. Though, the spell that turns red apples to green, not so much. Wait a second…was the spell the reason why Mrs. Green Apple sings the opening for this season? Oh...this was so cool. So, so cool. It's honestly a nice echo of Stark cutting into the flashback earlier. But the demon seer knew in advance Frieren would get a chance to read this dude's memories.

I love, love, love divination being used well in fantasy. It's something I try to incorporate into D&D games. For what it's worth I think Future Sight in One Piece is an example of this being used well. But this? This was so, so cool...
