Evolution Of A (Mucha) Lucha School...*UPDATE with one more version!
I was going through some episodes and backgrounds and realized there were three - possibly four - versions of the school.
Version 1 as it appeared in the 'Lucha School' pilot. I wanted a typical high school-type building that wouldn't be out-of-place in SoCal, right down to the muted colors. That was the point of the show: the mascaritas could be living next door to you, and that typical, everyday school could house all kind of crazy shenanigans...
Version 2. After the series was greenlit, I made a few changes and added the statue. This was the version that is actually used, and survives, in the main title sequence - even though the school itself was about to be changed for the series!
Version 3 (?). As we were going into production, Kids'WB decided the series should be set in a MASKED World: buildings should be masked, animals, everyday people...a bit like the old Kroft series LIDSVILLE. Cue a revolt from the series' creators, who thought this was beyond ridiculous and so decided to take their pencils and leave. Kids'WB decided not to pursue this direction, and so the series' creators picked up their pencils again.
Returning to the design process, I discovered the above version by one of the show's background artists was the school they were going with. (I also remember another version with a different statue, that I was able to nix). The above version is the one that appears in the first episode 'Back To School'.
Now, I was never that taken with this design, as I never really 'got it'. To me it reminded me of something carved out of rock from The Flintstones, and perspective-wise just wasn't dynamic enough.
*Update! Thanks to the sharp eyes of @newlunapastel there was a version 4 that was used in Dawn Of The Donuts. Got a feeling we were getting a bit tired of the same of opening shot, so the following version was used. Not sure by who, but I have a feeling it may have been by Roman Laney before he left the series. Love the statue. I think I may ultimately add it to my new version (see the end of this post).
But regardless of my opinion, it IS the design of the school. And so in 2024 as I revisit the series (What? Who? Why?). I made a few tweaks...
