For my preschool class I’m considering getting us a “class pet!” Preferably I want it to be low maintenance, and at least part of the care I’d like to use as a “job” for the kids - maybe checking water, dropping in food, cleaning things? (I’d be the one responsible for all the other aspects and take it home during breaks).

What are some options? I don’t really want to do a fish, but am open to mollusks, amphibians, crabs, reptiles, and other small critters. I am in North Carolina, if that helps with any kinda laws for the state.

When other kids are boasting about bunnies and chickens as their school pets .... 😌 And then you show them your school pet ..... *we have no idea how the wonderful bird got into our school but it's been 2 years and he hasn't left :)
