My own experience in education was not a great one. I was an average student with average grades but A's were the only thing that seemed to matter. I felt over-looked and a whole part of my culture was suppressed due to the idea that only one language should be learned. I never thought I would willingly be in a school-setting again. Now, I am a student mentor for little ones in a bilingual school. Each day I find myself on the brink of tears at the strength and grace my students show. I get to be in their classrooms and help them one-on-one. I'm Getting Sick of Stories that Feature School Bullying

Things I want to stop seeing in books that have a school setting: 1. Administration and teachers ignoring or condoning bullying 2. Administration and teachers who wring their hands over bullying but do nothing to deal with the bully(ies) 3. Administration and teachers who either deal with rumors by hoping it'll go away by itself or succumb to the rumors themselves 4. Administration and teachers who blame the victim for not fitting in 5. The idea that ignoring the bully and hoping they will get bored is the only way to deal with a bully I know all these scenarios exist in real life, but I'm tired of seeing it over and over again in books. Can we just have, for once, actual responsible adults who see bullying or hears nasty rumors and goes, "Nope, not today or ever," and ACTUALLY TAKES STEPS TO PUT AN END TO IT AND PUNISH THE BULLIES WHILE PROTECTING THE VICTIM?! Just. It is so frustrating to read. As a teacher. And as someone who grew up being bullied. Seeing these stories doesn't help me relate to the victim, it makes me relive my own bullying. It doesn't help. Can we quit with this narrative now?
