Nice review of Schurz High School teacher Michael Rychlewski's play “Chops”!
The show is the work of a Schurz High School English teacher named Michael Rychlewski. I'm not familiar with the production company, Dashnight Productions, but dollars to doughnuts says it was put together to help him bring this play to production at Theater Wit, under the lively direction of Richard Shavzin. Fair enough. Rychlewski is a capable, witty and fluid writer and, if you are fond of this disappearing genre, you may have a pretty decent old-school time. I had some fun — I confess to a weakness for plays steeped in Chicago history, especially entertainment history, and this is 90 minutes with enough local cultural references to satiate Dr. Nightlife himself, had he not moved with the times.

Love this story about Chicago Veterans and Schurz High School students working together to clean up the Portage Park neighborhood!
Volunteers grabbed supplies and hit the streets. They cleaned up sidewalks, parkways, and even removed graffiti. We asked Marine veteran Juan Cornejo why he decided to volunteer; “I saw it as a positive thing to do for the community. Being an officer for my local VFW, I’m big into doing things for the greater good. Being a veteran, I felt like we were all being great public examples for our youth to emulate.”
