“All life on Earth is connected and related to each other.” - Brian Richmond, about Darwin’s studies of Evolution.
Bone structures/common ancestors
Most animals look different, but they all have the same bone structure. Such as the humerus, the ulna, and the radius of the arms, fins, or legs. This is called the Homologous bone structure.
Many different species have different features. However, almost all species can be traced down to a common ancestor. As an example, humans and apes are related. But, humans did not evolve directly from the chimpanzees. Instead, both species came from a common ancient hominid ancestor that evolved in two ways
“Natural Selection is the modification of populations, where some traits were fit for the current environment.”- Brian Richmond, again, speaking of Darwin’s theory.
Descent with modification/Predator’s choice
Natural Selection is dubbed, “Survival of the fittest,” which is a misleading title, is the theory that organisms are forced to change to survive. Survival of the Fittest is often mistaken for how physically fit the organism is. Rather, it is how well the organism can survive and reproduce in it’s environment.
Let’s say there are four leaf bugs in a jungle setting. As you know, jungles are mostly shades of green. So, we have a GREEN one, a BROWN one, a RED bug, and a BLUE leaf bug. Obviously, the Green bug will survive to reproduce. The Brown one will maybe be able to survive, although his chances are a bit lower than the Green one’s. The Red and Blue leaf bugs will not survive very long, because they cannot hide themselves in plain sight. The colors they are are too easy for the predator to find, which allows the predator to find it quite easily. This is what I call, “The Predator’s Choice” because the predator will find easy prey no matter what, so Natural Selection evolves around what the predator can get.
The Predator’s Choice is also why many predators, such as wolves or lions will find the oldest, most sick, or injured animal in a herd of deer or wildebeest.
