Allman Brothers Film in the Works
- Movie will be based on 1996’s “Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band”
Nick Cassavetes is planning a movie about the Allman Brothers Band, Deadline reports in an exclusive story.
Based on Scott Freeman’s 1996 book, “Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band,” the film is untitled and as yet has no cast or release date. But it’s to focus on Gregg and Duane Allman’s childhood and rise to fame, Gregg’s marriage to Cher and the band’s unlikely friendship with Jimmy Carter.
“I grew up a huge fan of The Allman Brothers,” Cassavetes said. “They had a profound influence on the music culture in America and I’m honored to be able to have an opportunity to tell their story.”
Deadline did not say whether the film will delve in to the group’s latter eras and its acrimonious split with founding member Dickey Betts. But being that it’s a movie about the ABB, there will be plenty of drama either way.
“Beyond creating music that became a cultural touchstone, the Allmans’ story is one of tragic death, betrayal, drug and alcohol use and eventually exoneration and redemption,” Sunset Blvd Films President Len Fico told Deadline.
“Nick’s abilities to bring flawed but empathic characters to the screen makes him the only logical choice for the Allmans’ story.”
