Mabel Normand plays a second-hand rose in “Raggedy Rose” (1926) her final film. Produced by Hal Roach for the Pathe’ Exchange Distributors, It also co-starred Max Davidson & James Finlayson. The story was a comic concoction with contributions by Stan Laurel, Hal Yates & H. M. “Beanie” Walker among others. The domestic (American) release was a three-reel feature running at 30 minutes, but an extended 56 minute version was released to the foreign “export” markets.

Max and Dave Fleischer began making cartoons set to songs in 1924, 4 years before the release of Steamboat Willie.  While some of the films were actually silent but designed to be shown with accompanying music in the theater, they made 19 films using the Phonofilm sound-on-film process that had been invented by Lee de Forest in 1919 and then improved by his partner Theodore Case in the early 1920s.  Case and de Forest had a falling out that led to their company going bankrupt in 1926.  One of their former technicians leaked their secrets to competitor Pat Powers, and Powers then convinced Walt Disney to use to use his “Powers Cinephone” for Steamboat Willie.

All these sounds are acapella and guitar coutesy off the mills brothers. Mix of live action footage, animation , sing-a-long ( with the infamous "bouncing ball"). It's a lovely format. Loving the animation on that ship.

I think a lot of animation these days lack rhythm. Just a thought really.
