What exactly are you supposed to put in all caps in action lines? In my undergrad screenwriting classes, we were taught only to put characters when they first show up in all caps. Now I'm at a different school, and the professor suggests capitalizing certain sounds. Some students capitalize props or colors in the action lines as well. So I'm a little confused.

I would say this one is a big IT DEPENDS!

All you NEED to put in all caps is the characters when they first appear.  That is a mandatory thing.

For sounds, some people really want them capitalized so the sound people can find them better.  Some people don’t want them capitalized because it is distracting on the page.  I do a sort of half and half, where I will capitalize the startling sounds, the ones that are SUPER plot important.  So, for example, if they are running barefoot across a building and someone shoots out a glass window, which causes a problem for the protagonist, I would probably write “The glass SHATTERS”.  Stuff like that.  Every little sound, not so much.

For props and colors I only do so to draw direct attention to it.  Like if it is important that she DOESN’T HAVE A RING ON or something of the ilk.  Stuff like that.  I would maybe do that…once a script.  If that.  Definitely not for every prop or color.  Only if the plot absolutely swings on it being revealed a certain way.  (And really, that should be a rare thing).

This is the person from before. The one hoping to enter the screenwriting world. I know a little about screenwriting format, but I feel as if I've truly haven't grasped it, in the sense I could write in that format.

Well, I just got a recommendation for you to check out the book Screenwriter’s Bible by David Trotter. I don't know much about it, but timemachineyeah said it was helpful in terms of understanding formatting. You may want to start there and see how that goes.

But I'm sure they also sell a Screenwriting for Dummies! Actually, I just checked and yes, they do. That could be very useful in understanding the basics of screenwriting format.

Let me be really honest, though: You'll never know unless you try. It's a little weird at first to write in such a raw, skeleton-like structure and it's not for everyone. I enjoy screenwriting format because I think it's a very pure and simple form of writing. Everyone does it a little bit differently, though, and you just have to start writing to find your style.

Check out those books and see what works for you. But don't let the formatting trip you up too much -- just tell the story!
