Fic Recs: or, Fics So Good I Can’t Stop Suggesting Headcanons For Them
Like many fic readers (and writers), I appreciate the value of a good comment. There’s few things I enjoy more than finding a fic I can dig into, that makes me think and feel strongly enough that I have to share my thoughts with the writer. The past couple weeks, though, something’s been happening with unusual regularity: I keep reading fics that are so good I want to see more. The result is that I keep filling my comments with headcanons, alternative scenarios, sequel/continuation ideas...I can’t help myself. And for the most part, the authors have borne the brunt of my enthusiasm pretty well. :) So I thought it might be a good idea to recommend these fics to others!
(Suggesting headcanons and other ideas is kind of a touch-and-go thing. Some fic authors don’t care much for those prompts, even if you’re not demanding they be written; they want feedback only on the fic “as is,” or feel as though they’re being pressured to write a sequel even if they weren’t planning on it. I do my best to indicate that my ideas are purely in the hypothetical, and to respect when a story is marked as “finished” and the fact that any continuation- and the content thereof- is totally up to the author. For what it’s worth, all 3 writers listed here have proven to be talkative in comments and receptive to eager readers.)
irisbleufic is solely responsible for introducing me to the world of Back To The Future Doc/Marty fanfic; as such, she has spent months hearing ALL of my thoughts about this pairing. One of her latest fics has been especially conducive to my tendency for speculation and filling-in-the-gaps. Design Flaws was a response to a completely different anon who asked for Car Sex in the Delorean; an offhand remark at the end of the fic (and again in the comments section), however, spiraled me off into theories about what happens later on in the day the fic is set. (That can be the delicious thing about purely porny fics: they leave a lot of room for you to keep imagining beyond the simple scenario.) I think Irisbleufic and I, along with another reader, essentially wrote a whole second fic via comments. :) (P.S. Go read her most recent fic- What You Fight For- too; it’s a continuation of an AU in which one of the characters is intersex, and I may have been involved in the prompting process here too. WHOOPS.)
Unless you are deeply new here, you’re probably aware that my fandom du jour of this past month has been Black Sails. I found the pairing of Captain James Flint/John Silver while I was still in the process of watching the show, and somewhat by accident; I don’t remember what pairing I was investigating at the time, but whatever it was, I couldn’t find anything- but I did stumble upon this, and I haven’t regretted it since. I’ve been headcanon-ing the shit out of all the fic I’ve read since I started shipping it. Case(s) in point:
- farashasilver wrote a remarkable six-part, mostly canon-compliant series of Flint/Silver fics chronicling their developing relationship; it’s sensitive and poignant, as well as perfectly paced in their levels of comfort with each other, and you should all take a look at it. The fic that really set me off on prompting, though, was a side story written afterwards called Uncharted Waters. It’s an AU imagining if a young pre-canon John Silver met James McGraw (that’s Flint’s name before he was Captain Flint, and we do see this version of him in canon flashbacks) and they enjoyed a night together. It’s fun, and it’s sweet, and every moment of imagery is delightful- Farashasilver has a talent for describing the sights and sounds of their activities, the thoughts and feelings they’re experiencing, and that sensory detail makes it both incredibly hot and also just a satisfying read in general. In my review, I couldn’t stop talking about how incredible it would be if the characters could reunite again after that one night stand; as I said there, the only thing more utterly incendiary than two people with instant first-time chemistry is two people who meet up again after a one-off encounter and get to do all the stuff they’ve been imagining doing to each other since then. :) The author has indicated she’s working on a sequel, and I’ll be honest: it’s probably the fic I’m most looking forward to right now. Go read it even if you’re not familiar with the show- no context necessary other than “pirates before they were pirates,” so all you need is a love of characters with truly electric chemistry.
- More recently, scribespirare posted a Flint/Silver AU of their own called “Get down boy, go head get down”, in which Silver works as a prostitute at Max’s brothel, and Flint is the customer in bed with him. I didn’t know how I would feel about such an AU, but the author imbued it with all of Silver’s bratty cleverness and ridiculous charm, and Flint’s roughness and love of control combined with his ability to take the measure of a man and react accordingly. I ended the fic unable to decide which of several continuation ideas I liked best- so I gushed about all of them in my comment. I get the sense the author was already thinking about a sequel and I may have pushed them over the edge; I don’t know whether I’m sorry for that or not. ;) But now that the initiating situation has been established, I just want to see where it goes from here! It’s the mark of a good story when it leaves that kind of potential open to be explored.
(Again, if you’re new here, welcome to my style of recommending fanfics. I don’t know how to suggest reading material or leave feedback without including personal stories. That’s why all my fic recs are so damn long.)
