Candice. 4"by4.25"by3.125" sculpture of sculpting medium, gesso, acrylic, ink+graphite. 2019. // With thanks to candicelyee.wixsite.com/photography for having patiently sat as I struggled to complete my second sculpture in over a decade.
Behind the Scenes: Photographing Marble Busts
As part of the Photography Team here at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Ali and I often assist the photographers in request photography. This request was to shoot a series of photographs of five marble busts.
Due to the weight of the busts we worked collaboratively with the Art Handling Team, using a trolley jack and sliders, to manoeuvre the piece into the correct angles we needed to shoot from. The flashes were deliberately set up at different heights and distances to cast light and shadow onto the features of the busts, giving their faces character and personality otherwise lost in an equally lit photograph.
The bust depicted above is David Scott, 1806-1849. Artist (1831) by Sir John Steell. (PGL 1880)
We really enjoyed the challenges this shoot gave us and the opportunity to work with 3D sculpture rather than the flat prints we digitise day-to-day.
