It's been a while since I had an unhinged comment... as always, happy to share.

Dear Reader,

If you clicked on a fic that very clearly stated was an explicitly sexual story involving a Master and a Slave they owned as property, I'd say you had to know what you signed up for.

You still decided you had to tell me that clearly the slave owner was "in the wrong" while the freedom fighters were "in the right", so how disappointed you are that I am vilifying the good guys despite that.

Oh my dearest reader, you are reading the story from the POV of the slave who is fucked up in the head and fell for the first owner who was nice to him. You don't need to tell me he was "misguided", the text is pretty fucking clear on that.

Then you read the POV of the master who cares more about the slave than they should yet unsure whether he should burn the world down and plunge them all into war just cause they can and he's being told it would be "the right thing". Again, slave owner, not exactly the hero of the narrative.

You really did not need me to point out even more explicitly that it's a fucked up relationship. Yet the "villified" characters do it all the same multiple times in a variety of ways, even when the POV characters do not want to hear it... or not ready to.

Also, I reckon you did not finish the story.

But hey, I'm not sure I trust you would understand the nuance in a bittersweet ending anyway.

No, I will not add an extra "Stockholm syndrome" tag, cause it's not what the relationship is. Also, Stockholm Syndrome doesn't exist.

I think the master/slave and non-con tags warned you about what you were getting yourself into well enough.

Oh, how could a slave ever think being enslaved is fine and they have everything they need? An idea to explore in fiction.

I’m very pleased with the latest addition to my fan fiction library!

This newest edition is “Bend Around the Wind” by @scyllaya

It’s been one of my favorite Tony/Loki works for years now and I’d delayed typesetting it before now due to the sheer size. Clocking in at over 400,000 words I knew it would have to be split in to 2 volumes to make it manageable. (To give a reference of how long that is: the 3 volumes of Lord of the Rings are just over 480,000 words.)

This one presented a few problem solving opportunities. Where to cut the story for 2 volumes, large table of contents, varied chapter tiles, and a few stylistic choices to make that translate onto paper.

I opted for simple dustjackets as I typically do not keep them on while I’m reading and I will likely modify the hardbacks myself eventually.

Not just human. Standard white blond/brown male Jedi… again. Looks just like a Skywalker. Maybe female characters? poc? no? half-cyborg jedi who got injured in the purge? scarred… blinded… something other than this??

That interview about why they went with a white male character (hey, now, his hair is red, that totally counts as diversity, how dare you) was absolute bullshit (there’s Rey as a lady Jedi in the movies, so we can’t have two lady Jedi so close together! or whatever) and I’m still giving Respawn the side-eye for that, I don’t think it should be forgotten because women and people of color and aliens should be front and center, too! But I will give Respawn credit that Cal does have some facial scarring (though, not enough to detract from his attractiveness, of course, so I’m not sure how much this contributes) as well as that the other three characters who get significant stories in this game are all women.

(You can see he has some genuine scarring on his face, that he received when he was a young teen.)

Cere Junda (a black woman played by a black actress)

Merrin (depends on how we define the Nightsisters, played by a white actress)

Trilla (her race in the game is unclear, but she is played by a Dominican actress and I could see Trilla being modeled after her) These three women have significant stories of their own that are adjacent to Cal’s story, but still their own.  Cere’s story in particular is really good, imo, and even more importantly, she has a relationship with Trilla that is significant and entirely separate from Cal.  While it’s often shown through him, they do get scenes that are unique to them that has nothing to do with Cal and their relationship still stands separately from him.

While there are some of white/white dude characters (Malicos is an old white due), Greez, Prauf, and Tapal are aliens (played by white dudes), Cordova/his actor is YMMV on where you fall with Italians, Mari Kosan/her actress is Asian, Saw Gererra was played by Forest Whitaker (a black man), and Ninth Sister is an alien woman (played by a white actress). JFO is far from perfect on the front of diversity--much as I grew to really love Cal and I do love that they didn’t make him a grimdark kind of character, but instead there’s something very earnest and genuine about him, I could do with a lot more male characters being kind and compassionate--they should still receive pushback for their lead character being a typical white dude (no matter how well done the character is) and especially for that bullshit reason. But they should also celebrated for what it does do right, in the important and significant characters that make up the rest of the game.

I keep thinking that Frigga couldn’t have been Hela’s mother. She wouldn’t have let that happen. So maybe Hela’s mother was gone and Frigga and then Thor was what turned Odin away from warmongering.

I lean towards the idea that Frigga wasn’t Hela’s mother, but I could be convinced the other way if I had to.  But when the only parent Thor and Hela talk about is Odin, when there’s nothing soft or kind in Hela that Frigga would have fostered in her, I definitely lean the other way. But I could believe she was around--it would explain her reaction to Thor’s banishment in that deleted scene, why she was so upset about it, because the past was repeating in front of her.  She couldn’t stop it the last time, but she can’t stand to see it again. AS FOR HELA’S MOM, my headcanon is that Karnilla is Hela’s mother:

I know she doesn’t exist in the MCU, but Queen of the Norns could certainly explain her power levels and her dark black hair and, okay, when BOTH parents have a penchent for ridiculous headgear, you’re just gonna have to go big on that front, too.
