As part of the Trump administration’s pattern of holding refugees’ and immigrants’ lives hostage in service of Trump’s xenophobic and anti-immigrant policies, ICE has rounded up over one hundred Cambodian American refugees and placed them in detainment to face deportation.

Action Alert: Sign-On to Letter Telling Congress that Southeast Asian Americans SUPPORT Syrian Refugees

The surge of Syrian refugees seeking humanitarian protection has recently made national headlines as one of the biggest crises of our time. Unfortunately, anti-immigrant and anti-refugee groups are dominating the conversation with increasingly divisive language. Their hateful rhetoric challenges the humanitarian responsibility that once welcomed Southeast Asians into the United States following decades of war, trauma and genocide.

On October 8, the House Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing entitled "Terrorist Threat from Refugees." It is important for Congress to hear from the Southeast Asian American community, who represent the largest group of refugees ever resettled in the United States.

My favorite program is the recently announced Southeast Asian American Young Men’s Collaborative – a collaboration between the Southeast Asian Resource Action Center (SEARAC), Khmer Girls in Action (KGA), 1Love Movement, Stone Soup Fresno (SSF) and the Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC).

I am thrilled to see a coalition-based program that empowers Southeast Asian American boys and young men to realize their full potential and remove barriers through policy work. This program is a fantastic reminder that (1) forming coalitions are key to achieving equity, (2) our AANHPI population encompasses a vast array of identities and histories, and (3) our work is motivated by the impact of the lived experiences of those within our community.

The Southeast Asia Resource Action Center announced today the start of a collaborative that aims to empower Southeast Asian American young men and engage them in organizing efforts. Watch the video above to learn more and check out the multimedia exhibit showcasing organizations that support young men of color. "In California, 31.9% of Cambodian American men, 31.9% of Hmong American men, 35.8% of Laotian American men and 23.1% of Vietnamese American men do not have a high school diploma. These are rates that are well above the statewide average (19.2%) and second only to Latino men (42.6%)." The Southeast Asian American Young Men's Collaborative (SEAAYM) consists of Khmer Girls in Action (KGA), 1Love Movement, Stone Soup Fresno (SSF) and the Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC).
