It isn't love - he can't love. He doesn't love her. He is her destruction, the end of her existence, she belongs to him, to the power of his hungering for her. And so he belongs to her. He stays with her, at the end, when everyone else has left, has told her to be normal, to calm herself - he has wanted her for the chaos in her, for all she is, that is what he hungers to devour, that is what his own nature undoes him for. It isn't love, not in the slightest, it is the desire to end her existence and consume it into him - it is an obsession that defines the self - and it is one that she finds herself in. It's not love, but instead it is an utter union of life and death, a marriage bed and a death bed. It plays on the exact beats of a tragic romance without actually being one. It's a carving down to the soul, a call of the void. His hunger for her ends him, he chooses her, in his consumption of her. He wants her entirely, even to his own death. It's an unromanticised, unsoftened predation that yet has such a clarity to it, such an exchange, has such an agency for her in the sole moment of her destruction. She pulls him to her. He stays. She wants them to end, he wants her enough to end with her. He stays.

#he is the manifestor of her shame - her shadow self - and he is the absolver of this in being her tormenter #only van franz - orloks literal and thematic double - tells her to acknowledge and examine that darkness - that whole humanness - and that #is in the capacity of wanting her to be a sacrifice to defeat orlok. another way of wanting her destruction. of bringing it.#and she accepts both. the righteous and the selfish.#'he is beyond our morality' beyond anything but the key of his own wanting - his own nature and how it can undo him #it is the best vampire movie I have ever seen and I say that without any exaggeration and with a long roster of them to consider. utter #pinnacle of the gothic vampire tradition #another thing I find interesting is that in the nosferatu tales' cousin - the dracula tradition - mina and lucy can fairly overtly be #interpreted to love one another romantically and platonically. but with ellen and anna it seemed largely platonic with a slight hint of one #sided romantic attraction from ellen's end - another thing othering her and alienating her. another thing hampering her from expressing #herself even to her closest ones. another way she bites herself back and is consumed.#in a sense they are the optimistic and pessimistic - even nihilistic - mirrors of one another. dracula - though there are the awful losses #of lucy and quincey and heaps of trauma all around - is a story where the love between people enables them to triumph over destruction.#there is lasting pain but there is survival and renewal. and in nosferatu the peace and reconciliation is in the end of existence #I am going to be thinking about this for ages #nosferatu 2024 #I completely understand maleficara when she compared them with her sebacielle #you know what I'm tagging it #sebaciel #sebacielle #so I can have in it my tag for them to refer to in analysis
