what do you think now that Sebastian said he fulfilled the contract? You’ve been saying that you don’t think he’s ever done that before

I’m waiting on my fluent people to get back to me (it feels like a lot of people dipped out lol…) but either way it’s not making sense to me so I’m gonna be skeptical. That’s why I’ve also been saying over the last few months that I think Anna rejected him. Key oddities we have no explanation for • He didn’t say she would become his master. • She didn’t deny God, which Sebastian said was one of the things that gave Ciel the right to a covenant. Even Modri did this Among other things

So, I think that rejecting him might not fulfill the contract but be a breach of it. It’s unfaithful. Falls back into the covenant = marriage thing, where I’d said I think that Ciel and Sebastian are only engaged. I didn’t take this literally so it probably isn’t for Anna either. Like Ciel, he had her at the alter with the cause of her woes (her family) all dead around her. He had her sell the ring her mother gave her for when she got married, with her saying she wouldn’t need if when she married a doctor. Maybe he told that he came to her when her father(s) had not, and he saw her beauty while the object of her affections had not, and all she had to do was sacrifice him now to consummate the covenant. They were definitely looking like the ones at the alter instead of her and the doctor

They could run away together instead (as he said only that “the two will escape”. He didn’t say he would help /them/ escape, in the raws) and only make it appear as though she died in an accident. She told Modri to rent a carriage, which sebastian got for ciel too.

I think I had a post about how I thought he conspired with Lau to run away from everything, can’t find it now. Guess I’ll have to remake it

come to think of it, Agni left his life behind to live aside Soma under a new identity too. AND he tried to get Soma to leave with him

Like “Humans are superficial. I saw your beauty from the moment I saw you.”, but in actuality he didn’t feel anything for her either, and the “I arranged her a groom who had absolutely no romantic feelings for her” was a double entendre.

but maybe I’m all wrong, Sebastian didn’t do any of this, and actually had her by the hair because he was sucked her soul out. and I’m schizophrenic lol

Re: the covenant = marriage metaphor. I think Ciel and Sebastian are not just engaged, they are actually married (they made vows and are working on fulfilling them), but the union is as yet unconsummated. The requirements of the contract must be fulfilled first. In religious contexts the lack of consummation is grounds for annulment, so for Ciel and Sebastian this means there is still space for the marriage to be broken/invalidated somehow, i.e. UT or someone else meddling and trying to break the contract.

I'm waiting to see the rest of Modri's story play out, but it seems to me that the demon, having fulfilled the contract with Anna, then immediately moved to consummate it by eating her soul (the chapter's title is "The butler, fulfilling".) Sebastian tried to trick Ciel into ending their contract early on too, so if Modri's demon is the-demon-later-known-as-Sebastian this sort of haste and trickery doesn't seem OOC.

I think Anna deciding to run away with the doctor might have been the "breach" that destroyed the demon's faith in her, as he had previously admired the beauty in her resilience, staying strong and stoic, suffering silently, while agreeing to marry the baron for her family's sake; Sebastian also sees Ciel as beautiful for being similarly hard-headed in refusing to give up on his revenge and never showing weakness despite his traumatic past.

Right now it's possible we as the audience are simply not privy to the details of Anna and the demon's contract, because Modri wasn't there when it was formed - the story is being told from his POV, not Anna's nor the demon's. Or it could simply be the demon was trickier about making contracts in the past than before the one with Ciel. Perhaps over time the demon refined its methods and requirements to cultivate ever-better souls. All of the servant arcs have them revisiting their pasts in a way, providing a contrast between their current selves with their past selves in their backstories, showing how they've grown and changed in the decisions they make while on their respective missions. So if the pattern holds for Brighton arc, and Modri's demon is Sebastian, the demon may very well be doing things that present-day Sebastian wouldn't necessarily do.

The demon hunter character and present-day Modri Vladis both wear white tippets with the same insignia, outfits with similar details (robes and buckles etc), and boots decorated with the same design. They also both have sharp teeth

Perhaps it's the uniform of some kind of holy order of demon hunters/exorcists? And the hunter, after saving Modri from falling into the demon's temptation, ends up recruiting Modri to his cause
