People are way too loose about the term rarepair these days. A rarepair is not a ship having only one new fic a year or under 100 fics; a rarepair is a ship that has an audience of 1 writer and her 1 freak who thinks the ship is utter catnip.
Hey, new reader who finished reading all of your work and few days ago and read up on your blog a lot! I have a small question to ask you: since your HK fics explore a lot of queer identity and sexuality, may I ask if you’re gonna explore bi, pan and ace identities as well? Or are there already bi, pan and/or ace characters in your universe? Just curious to know.
Thanks for the question!
My thing, which is usually my m.o. with fantasy, is I don’t tend to write about those experiences with modern words cause they, to me, kinda take me out of the writing. Though obviously focusing on trans and queer perspectives is still the whole ball game. I try to let the actions and words speak for themselves and summon a bit of “how would a trans or queer person understand and express themselves in, say, the 1600s” and also in this case they’re all bugs.
Totally recognize that this means some of the identities I’ve decided on don’t get expressed clearly. I am planning on having a lot more individual identity explorations through DftD with the hope of continuing in my way of doing it while exploring some of the particularities of each bugs identity. Also all of these are fluid going forward cause changing identities is the best part of life imo.
With that being said. Some of the identities I’d love to clarify here outside of the text based on where we’re at with AWCV and End.
Sherma: ace and gay. Kinda figuring it out though. I base so much of him off of how I was after I left the church as an 18yo tbh.
Lace: bisexual, kind of she/they with it.
Phantom: Non-binary, but their story is honestly too tragic with regard to who they would or would not have been with or become as a bug. So sexuality is just not something that came out. My personal feeling leans towards them being pan tho
Second: bisexual trans man
Shakra and Hornet: lesbian butches. Also Hornet is, in my fiction, a trans woman
Trobbio: mostly a gay guy but I think he’s thinking about it. Also EXTREMELY genderfuck
Herrah: bisexual trans woman
Roan: heterosexual trans man
Vespa: is actually kinda complex, cause she’s a queen bee and so technically speaking she is the queen, mother, and mate of her whole hive. However that’s not entirely sexual because queen bees kinda get brought eggs and inseminate them with stores inside their body. Romantically speaking she’s a cis lesbian.
Garmond: the friend group’s one cis het man and surrogate father. RIP
Sorna: doesn’t put a label on it but not into men.
Humm: non-binary pansexual
Hollow: non-binary ace and pan
Queen Ephibysse in her Writhing Eternal, First of the Void: ?????????????
There are others I’m sort of rotating in my head but will save for later.
Yoooooooo, where’s my boy Ogrim?! Is he alright and alive still in New Hallow?!
Definitely one of those things that I can’t answer, but I will say I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately.
Also, if I may, let me use this ask to announce that Death for the Deathless starts March 8th. So, this question and more will be finding their answers soon!
