Thank you so much for this ask, @dumbdumb56 that tumblr proceeded to not let me answer lol
I feel like the two voices of this story really gave me so much room to exercise my prose muscles. Herrah with writing about grief, motherhood, regret, and aging, and Moor with writing about writing, knowledge, and history. They were both so fun to inhabit and while I’m sad to say goodnight to Herrah for a while, I’m so excited to write more Moor with DftD. These combined with getting to do some exploration of New Hallow was such a blast. I think sometimes with fic there’s some amount of shortcutting I get to do where I don’t need to describe everything about, say, Sherma or The Slab, because the reader knows that stuff already. But moments like describing Moor’s disguise or the Abyssruin really forces me to dig my fangs into the details and I just LOVED it. Extremely stoked to do more.
The dialog with Ephibysse was actually the first thing I wrote for this. Back when I started outlining her character last November, I got really inspired to have her and Herrah talk and just wrote it orphaned from anything. It changed a bit over the course of writing “End” but a lot of the gist about what Ephi thinks and who she is remained. Something I’m really happy with is how people still haven’t guessed what she is. So I’m pretty thrilled that I’m managing to hold back her mystery while keeping people hooked. She’s another one of those minds I love being in.
Also, yeah couldn’t help but ship Moor with Sorna. I got that evil woman supremacy brains worms and Moor’s a self insert. So you know.
That was Ghost! I actually had that head canon for a while and I’m planning on doing a little spin off down the road about Quirrel and Ghost based on what I set up in the story. Probably not until after DFTD and the full release of all the Silksong dlc. DFTD is going to be focused on New Hallow and a few more locations I can’t reveal yet. But I really want to explore the wastes and Quirrel is my vehicle for that I think.
Last thing I’ll say is, a comment I’ve gotten here and on the comments of the fic is how I’ve managed to ignite interest about Herrah as a character and convey the emotional weight of who she is, and I am just so unbelievably honored to hear that. We don’t get a lot of great depictions of morally ambiguous, flawed mothers in fiction that don’t get met with a ton of hate from fanbases, and that was something I hoped to engage with in this story. Seeing comments about how what I made allowed people to connect with her enough to cry over her tragedy is so touching.
As I’ve said before; hollow knight lore is so cool, I wish motherhood was real.
Thanks for the ask and for reading ❤️❤️❤️
