Featuring: You and your desire to not be hazed, 2000+ words
You'd gained a bit of a reputation, it seemed.
You were the crybaby on base. An easy target-
When Starscream wasn't around.
Somebody not wise enough, fast enough, sneaky enough to get away from the day-to-day harassments from other 'cons.
Maybe you felt like you made yourself easy to target- but you couldn't help it, couldn't help being small, couldn't help that Starscream visibly cared for you, so much so that others around him could see it, even if they had their own twisted interpretation of what was going on- but maybe, maybe it was your fault, to let yourselve have become a target.
Or maybe it was the simplest explanation:
That even without something to fire at, soldiers would find something to shoot.
"Where are you hiding..."
You kept yourself silent. If they couldn't find you, they couldn't ask you for 'help'- hiding in the cargo bay was really the only safe bet for you at the moment. Times like these where Starscream was off base, and you were alone.
And that meant you were easy pickings.
"Did you see where they went?"
You hear a clang, a exclamation of pain.
"If I did I wouldn't be looking, idiot. Check over there."
"If Starscream finds out we've been messing with his toy, he's not gonna be happy."
A third voice. The word 'toy' made your spark spin for a moment, and you had to keep your fans from activating.
"Starscream can barely register his aft from his helm these days with the way Megatron's been layin into him. You hear where he was deployed?"
You stop yourself from moving- carefully sneaking away could wait. Starscream hadn't told you where he'd been sent off to- and you hadn't had any reason to really question when he'd be back, he always came back!
Carefully, you peek over a storage crate- the three mechs, all seekers, too distracted to notice you- one searching around a stack of crates, two looking at a datapad that you could faintly see coordinates through.
And you see one of the mechs smirk.
"Slag. Almost feel sorry for the mech."
"No you do not."
"No, I don't. Fragger asked for the Pits, he's got the Pit."
"Guys, I'm not finding them in here," the third mech stepped over, looking at the datapad with a grimace.
"This planet might just be the slagging Pits," the first mech muttered, before shaking her helm.
"C'mon, there's gotta be something more fun than pushing around crates. They're not in here."
"You barely looked-"
"And I said we're done. We can find another mech for target practice."
For a moment, your whirring processor forgets the worry you had for Starscream-
Something was happening between these three Seekers you'd only ever gotten to see from a distance. The third mech- she looked a lot like Starscream, but... different, her palette rich in purple. Her teal wings, though, had that same imposing spread you'd seen Starscream hold, and her posture was casual- the kind of ease one held themself with when they were sure their orders would be followed.
Even Starscream didn't stand like that much these days.
The other two mechs' wings rose as she lifted hers, a low humming in the air as she glared up at the two mechs, both larger than her- before their wings settled, and you could feel the air almost snap with their change in demeanor.
"Okay, Slipstream."
"You got it, boss."
"If you're still in here, little bird…"
Her voice had that edge of a rasp to it that Starscream carried, it was so familiar it made your joints lock up-
But you hear a snarl of disgust, rather than a continued statement. It seemed you weren't worth the effort of a more elaborate threat, at least.
Behind the three seekers, the door closed. At least, for the moment, you were safe-
But it wouldn't last long. If it hadn't been for the scheduled shift that you had to follow (by Starscream's orders, no less), you would be in the habsuite, away from the world and away from all of this-
Would that have really been any better? Trapped in a spiral as your wings would begin to ache from underuse, underpreening, your vocaliser going scratchy after days of not speaking?
And who knew when Starscream would return- who knew how long you could rely on his return, when Megatron was so determined to send him off on suicide missions? Would, hah, would Starscream's death stop the harassment? After all, if you're not his toy anymore, then what would you be? Where was your place here?
"Cadet…?"
That soft voice almost didn't penetrate your thoughts, processor working hard enough that you could feel the heat as your helm-vents worked on overdrive to cool you. The noise must have alerted the speaker, but you don't look up, don't properly hear them- after all, you had to have thoughts about what even you were worth to the Decepticons, if Starscream were gone, if you maybe didn't even see the point of being with the side that so clearly hated you so-
"Cadet?"
This time you looked up- your mind stopped in it's spiral, the change in heat so quick you could hear a dull thunk in your vents from the thermal expansion.
Echo.
Dark rich purple, matte black, indigo- high audials that framed his helm, long spikes that reached beyond his shoulders. He was tall enough that he stood over the crate you were hiding behind- tall enough to easily see you.
"Are you okay?"
He'd asked before you could process properly that he was here, and there was a coolness, a spreading of relief from your processor down through your frame, as if the whole of your chassis was shifting back into place from the gentle feeling of Echo's pressence. You feel a large servo against your faceplates- and look down to see the tears that stained his digits. When had you started crying?
"I'm fine," you state automatically, harshly, pushing his hand away- even that felt automatic, and you regret it the moment you see that big sad face of his. "I'm…"
You weren't fine. You could see that plain as day on Echo's faceplates- that sad, acquiescent smile of his.
"…wanna get out of here?" He asked, not suddenly, but still surprising- he worked here, didn't he? Hadn't he come here for something? It occured to you, then, that Echo had come looking for you, had felt for you-
Had found you because he wanted to find you. Was it really so simple as that? His big cherry red eyes reflecting what must be your own state.
His servo was held out to you, still stained with your tears. "Starscream is on a mission from Megatron, right?"
You nod, wiping at your faceplates with your fingertips and trying not to scratch your protoform with popped claws. "I heard it wasn't anyplace nice."
Echo smirked, a buzz to his field around him- good humour, a joke. "Well, Starscream should be fine, right? If he can survive Megatron, he can survive someplace that's not-so-nice."
You hesitate from your spot on the ground. Echo was… trying to make you feel better, and you didn't know if it was working yet or not- but standing would probably feel better than being in the pain-ball you were curled up in. You reach out, take his hand, and feel something bitter rise up in you.
"…and if he doesn't come back?" You mutter, looking away from those gentle faceplates, sad, wide optics.
Echo pulled you up- easily, really, like he couldn't feel the weight you felt in your frame. How did he make it seem so easy? "He'll come back. Even if Foxfire and Knock Out have to put every piece back together, he'll be back." Echo's face looms in closer, a soft smile drawn across it. "…he'll need you to vent to, if he's hurt- and, well. Brag to, when he succeeds."
When.
Like Echo himself expected Starscream to come back in one piece. Was that even respect in his EM field, rolling in soft waves against yours?
He really did pull you up so easily. Had you really only needed to hear reassurance from one mech? That Starscream might need you when he came back? Did it matter that Echo's wings were rolling slowly, as if to show you that he was comfortable around you- more than friendly, welcoming in his gestures?
"Yeah," you agree, with some hesitation. "He'll, uh, really complain if we have to get him new arms- new null-rays, even, that wouldn't be fun."
Echo hummed in agreement, opening the storage door- when had he lead you all the way from your crate? "If he gets an update to his wings, we could always make sure to play them up- though, it would be no small feat to bring back energon from a Volcano. Earth is pretty volatile, yes?"
You nod, thinking about the tectonic plates Starscream tried to teach you of. Plate tectonics- you shuddered, thinking about Earthquakes. There were reasons you preferred a sky base.
"…did you want to go somewhere?"
The question took you out of your revery of trembling mountains and molten magma, and you had to give yourself a light reset of your processor. "W- I mean, I finished my scheduled tasks- I was just gonna stay out of the way until the next one."
You hear a low chuckle- another of Echo's soft, deep sounds that seemed to resound deep in his chassis. The hum of electricity in your frame jolted, and you could feel your wings lift, settle again.
"I'm sure your habsuite is lonely, with the air commander gone. We could go back to mine, if you'd like…?"
You blink your optics up at him for a moment- before sighing. You considered it- considered the empty suite you'd otherwise be stepping into. Starscream would be back- Echo himself seemed so sure of it. And there was that buzz to his EM field, that seemed to soothe the storm in yours.
You really probably should be around a mech that likes you right now, it's something Foxfire would recommend, and Echo felt… well, good to be around. Not the same as Starscream, but, assuredly, you felt like this mech had your best interest at Spark, somehow.
Somehow…
Giving him a tired smile, you nod, and Echo seemed… surprised, by this. "I mean, you're not wrong… that might be nice. Do you still have your nest?"
You could feel that strange thrum of his EM field, and you wished you could understand what it meant- but Echo's face remained that easy, gentle- no, careful smile. Were you really so fragile that he had to be this gentle? It almost made you mad.
…almost. For now it was that simmer of tired annoyance that you pushed deeper, sitting beside the general anxiety and that scratching need to do something, no matter how much you actually did.
"It'll be comfortable," he assured you as you walked- even with his size, he seemed to take up so little space in the halls of the base. "I've… added, some stuff, you said you like soft things, right?"
…he really did seem to go out of his way for you, didn't he? "Yeah," you say, even your voice feeling heavy in your audials.
The nest looked so cosy, when you got there- fewer sharp-edged objects, more cohesion, blankets and cusions and the like. You could feel a weight pulling you into it, like all your frame wanted to do was collapse, here and now- and all you had to do was find a small corner for yourself. It wasn't hard at all.
"Good," you hear Echo say, and you look over your back at him, finding your frame settling more easily into his handiwork than you'd like to admit. "I'm going to grab us some energon- I'll be right back. Okay?"
Those big cherry optics- they didn't seem so sad, at the moment. You nod, and his smile grows.

Echoes of Vos
Starscream stared across the command console, watching Echo input the various updates to the inventory. Today, he had deliberately put himself in the same area for duties as the other warmech-
And for the first few hours, he had let the time go by with minimal discussion.
There was a moment in his processor where it flashed back to the moment he had walked in on the two of you- Echo's wings, massive and powerful, spread out after a meticulous preening-
And you, radiating pure desire into the shared habsuite. Pure claim. Starscream knew in other times, he would have simply taken the moment to bask in that energy, enjoy seeing what you were taking-
But it had happened again. A shut-down, a closing off of opportunity with another, even when then, you had seemed so close to understanding-
But no. You had let Echo leave without another word.
In spite of all of the gatherings Starscream had tried to take you to, here you were, finding your own powerful fliers to claim- and he couldn't say anything against your taste in mechs.
Starscream wanted to know more. He wanted to understand the mech that had managed to breach something nobody else had managed to reach since leaving Vos-
Leaving Cybertron.
He decided, rather than playing around with his words, to be direct.
"What are your... intentions, with my Cadet?" He asked, digits interlocking in front of his face as he leaned elbows onto the console.
The faint blue of the holo-screen was soft over Echo's features, his broad wings flicking once- before settling, low, optics flicking towards Starscream with a curious buzz of his EM field.
"What are your intentions, Air Commander?" He asked softly.
Starscream's wings jolted back, high on his shoulders.
His intentions?
To save your life. To keep you safe. To preserve something of Vos-
Easily washed to the wayside as excuses. But you… there were so many things in you he saw.
Determination.
Loyalty.
Trust- perhaps, naivety.
Traits he was all too known for taking advantage of, in any given situation. Starscream knew his own reputation, and knew that at least some of it was earned.
And in Echo's EM field, he felt that questioning of his truth.
Starscream knew the rumours- what other mechs had thought you were to him, what some still whispered that you might be. It was another reason he'd wanted to bring you out-
To at least give you a taste of freedom, other mechs outside of himself. He was selfish, but he forced himself to understand what you needed-
Even if he was a bit coy with the reasons to you.
So he leveled his own steady look right back into Echo's optics, letting his frame relax visibly, his wings held partway up, his servo on his hip.
"They're my cadet. My intentions are to see them fly- with their own trine someday, should they manage to pin members."
And how easily, from that, how you could, yourself...
Bring in more to his flock.
…was that it?
It made it seem so easy to believe. He had held you in sleep, felt your denta on his plates-
And felt such satisfaction in seeing you bite into and mark the mech facing him now.
He remembered a time when Foxfire had called him a 'Wannabe Winglord'. It wasn't far from the truth.
It's like an itch in the back of his processor, really-
The understanding that you were not part of his flock, but should be.
It was there in the moment when he'd seen you with Echo- that satisfaction of, 'at last, a trine for my Cadet!'
Only to see you shy away from it, like you'd been caught doing something...
Wrong.
Taboo.
How many degrees of separation between your generation and his were there, really? Starscream had known that, down the line, certain protocols and lines of code were omitted from uploads, even actively deleted, before certain Seeker generations had come online.
But the need to be trined, to have his flock, was so ingrained into Starscream that, until recently, the very idea of you not understanding that hadn't even occurred to him.
How frustrating. If he could complain to somebody about it, he would.
And he should.
His trine- and there was always the mental block, skipping over into the interruption of 'but what of Cadet's hypothetical trine?'
Because Starscream hated self reflection. Like an itch in the back of his-
Echo had made his way to the other side of the console while Starscream had fallen into thought. The large servo on his shoulder bringing him out of it, but really, it was that quiet buzzing in the air that grabbed Starscream's attention, Echo's own field a humming response.
"...it sounds like we have the same goals, then."
It was as simple as that. Starscream whirled around as Echo made his way to his next round of duties.
"So you're pursuing them, then?" He asked, his voice loud in the nearly empty room. "You won't stop, even if they're a pain in the aft to get through to?"
And Echo stops, his frame shifting as he rolled his shoulders, wings lifting slowly, lowering again, as he turned to offer a smile.
"It hasn't been a pain yet. I think you know they're worth it."
He was off before Starscream could say anything more to him.
What was there to say when you couldn't even be mad for being called out?
Starscream x original Seeker Character (Cadet) for @radioactiverats! They've given me permission to publish this lil gift for them as a Chapter 20 to their Cadet au! Chapter 19 can be found here, please give their stuff a read!
This was supposed to only be like 1000 words. It is. 4300+. Oops.
Featuring: Starscream, Original Seeker Character Cadet, OC Seeker Echo, pining, possessiveness, jealousy, and hints of reciprocated trining feelings!
Truly, having the understanding of just what his Cadet was going through should have made him more wary of his own trining instincts- there had been the rare flares of jealousy, when he had heard about 'Girls Night'- but ah, he had had work to do, work that would keep all three of those idiots safer-
So why had Starscream felt like the idiot for missing out? It wasn't a feeling he'd liked. Had they spoken of him, had they missed his presence? There was that latent instinct trying to tell him 'They're taking them away- and who can blame those two? How long has it been since the three of us shared that bond wholly together-'
And he had to remind himself that the little blue jet's rampant trining needs could genuinely be triggering old instincts. Old instincts to reaffirm his own claims, pin Skywarp, those pretty new claws he'd noticed clinging to his chassis and scraping red finish. To mark Thundercracker, sweet Thundercracker, who had helped him corner Skywarp, all those vorns ago, whose gentle presence had become a rarer and rarer bond, and how much of that had been on himself?
The thrill of their bond had grown distant, that flight nearly a fond but faded memory, but still, he felt part of that in his core- could feel it still, whenever the three of them flew together. The need for the three of them, that bond and connection.
And when he looked to his Cadet, the one good thing he had managed to save throughout this war…
He could understand the emptiness you must be feeling, the aching need spiking through your EM field at regular intervals while you slept, or the flare-ups while handling what had otherwise been regular tasks. Or at least, he knew that clawing need must be there, must be the trigger for those spiking anxieties, those flashes of anger that you no longer seemed able to hold in wholly. Before you had started your own shift, your own change, optics picking up more of that vermillion tinge to them, it had been just about keeping his student safe.
Keeping the last piece of Vos that seemed so precious safe.
But there was that realisation that the things he found precious of Vos weren’t always the things others might call gentle. No, he remembered the cackling laugh of seekers cornering each other around spires, flying daringly towards cliffs, dancing in the heat of updrafts and spiraling in deadly stunts down wind-wells. The energy of pinning or being pinned, of feeling somebody’s servos just miss tailfins or thrusters, of finding the way back to whatever bar and leaning against it while a daring opponent or try-hard wannabe trinemate stumbled their way back in.
The rush of flight and the danger of falling but knowing, especially with a trine, that gravity was just another toy to play with.
It wasn't a gentle protectiveness he was feeling towards you, anymore.
Not after the incident with that dark, quiet Seeker- whose designation he had already lost in the buzzing of his processor over all of this.
The biting had been one thing- it wasn't uncommon to allow somebody close to preen another like that, even in fliers outside of Vos. It wasn’t even necessarily exclusive to trine-mates or Amica- though perhaps he wouldn't so readily admit how pleasant it had been, the hum of his fans low as his claws had hooked more firmly into blue hip-plates.
Maybe that's why he had started looking around again- a Seeker seeking a distraction. That former Winglord's trinemate could eat slag, but the bulky Seeker who gave him energon reports was competent, fast, a good flier- and as a single flier, he was good for filling in missing formations. Unusually chameleon about it, like he could mirror just about anyone he flew with- to a point. So why not flare his wings a little? Why not let himself look over those navy and black wings as they lifted higher, clearly enjoying his praise, his words, the accent of familiar Vosian between them another added pleasure-
So why did it feel like there was something massive behind him? Threat alerts pinged in his processor, but he had brushed it off as another anxiety spike, something new and unpleasant that made him less... rational. Another thing he could blame on the war.
And yet, that soft buzzing steadily grew as he spoke with the other Seeker, became more of a low, thrumming roar. The widening of the other Seeker's optics had him whirling, seeing you, his Cadet, wings spread wide in the hall, glaring with those new fiery eyes-
It had been so long since he'd last gotten to see it unfiltered that it was a shock when he realised what was going on.
Did you even realise what it was you were doing? It may as well have been a spoken word, shouted.
Mine.
It was a claim. Or, the sloppy attempt at an undirected one. And you were blaring it into the hall for all to hear, as though none of you had ever left those spires of Vos. There you stood, showing off those wings he had stolen for you, standing as tall as your frame would allow, your EM field loud as cannonfire with wildly misdirected intent-
It was certainly a sight to behold, in retrospect. In the moment, Starscream had snapped with surprise, frustration, his current hope for a bit of stress relief whirling away with a quiet 'nevermind' before Starscream could stop him-
But his Cadet looked almost pleased, and there was something in the way your eyes followed after the larger Seeker, something so proud of yourself, that you had secured Starscream's attention back to you, had frightened off his quarry. Your wings were held comfortable and steady, more yours than he’d ever seen them, and that had him hold back his words.
If you hadn’t been aware of what you had been doing, that was one hell of a show of power. Had he taught you that?
He felt the tugging at his intake, the smallest smile twitching away before he forced a more stern expression over his features.
"You're not sorry."
It hadn't been a question, but after all that training, all that time around him- could he deny the satisfaction, seeing that scarred face hold some of that glare for him? Like he was no longer looking at somebody broken by war, but one that would demand to stand as his equal looking him in the optics? And the way you responded flatly, admitting to your claim, even in part…
You certainly stood tall enough on your own if you felt you could challenge him.
So he let you busy yourself with his meal, returning to his reports.
Glancing an optic down the hallway where that lone Seeker had disappeared when he knew your back was turned. His processor buzzing on new ideas.
~~
Real rest was hard to come by when you were a Decepticon, but Energon flowed well after some of the latest missions (attacks, though you had plenty of justifications for those based on survival, and everyone had been in higher spirits after all, so don’t worry about it, don’t dwell on the little creatures that you were stealing the energy from-).
All these thoughts and more buzzing through your head as you laid back, fighting for the recharge you knew you needed.
Starscream had not been back to your shared habsuite that evening- and there had been a realisation, that perhaps he wouldn't be returning for a reason. There was something at least, after that shared moment in the grass, that felt sated after cleaning through his wings, gently polishing away the very few plant-stains that Starscream had made such a fuss about. Like this was a part of the experience you needed, that need to be needed fed, ever so slightly.
Something about it still hadn't been quite enough, and you knew it- but you didn't know why. Starscream should be more than enough for that empty feeling clawing in your chassis, at your very spark, right? All this time since that day, and still you couldn’t find the answer for yourself. Shouldn’t he be enough? Pits, even his trine had noticed that need in you. It should be enough, right?
Girls Night had only really partially scratched that itch in your processor, though. Like there was some deeper, roaring need that felt so awful in you, a storm that you were thrown into that kept you clawing for whatever secret thing it was you needed.
That day in the hall flashed through your processor again. It had been hard not to think about the way EM fields still pricked over your panels, shifting to vent excess heat that vacillated from frustration to a dark satisfaction.
The way that mech had turned heel after you had stared bullets right into him? Exhilarating. It was you that had done that, not Starscream's dismissal-
And something about that felt so right in your spark.
Did Starscream ever feel this, you wondered? Giving orders to others in his trine, seeing them executed with efficiency? There had to be pride in that.
Processor overwhelmed, you laid back onto your shared berth, aware of how... empty, it seemed, after having been preened by other Seekers, having shared it with Starscream so regularly, after spending all that time cleaning those handsome wings of his-
Sighing in frustration, you forcibly offline your optics, spreading yourself out on the berth and taking up more space than you usually might, hoping that might disperse SOME of this odd backup energy. After several kliks of forcing yourself to think about the most boring reports and the files you could possibly conjure up, you find yourself finally slipping into recharge.
As if sleep would offer you any real rest.
Was it normal to store datapads like this? You find yourself wondering, digging through an endless drawer in a wall below the ship’s bridge. You felt like you had spent joors looking for something that Starscream needed, something that would help him take a break, properly REST for a change-
Deep red optics swerving their way away from you as you worked and you can feel their absence. You feel heat in your chassis, too. You keep digging for a moment, before that tugging heat had you turning your gaze upwards, back to the source of Starscream’s eyes, and seeing-
Him.
That big Seeker, standing at the bridge above you, talking to Starscream. A dream didn't stop you from feeling that prickling up your spinal strut, your wings flaring as you felt that anger spread through them. Who did this Seeker think he was, talking to your commander like that, flaring his wings so prettily, so invitingly? Stars gleamed through glass above the bridge and you found yourself lifting- It was easy to fly up to the two, set servos on the larger Seeker, yank him back by the wings, the one who you hadn't even learned the name of and who was he, even, to speak so familiarly to Starscream??
From the one that had taught you to fly on old wings, the one that had drilled in the lessons you had to reteach yourself to fly on these new ones.
Something in your dream compounded that flight training, remembering Starscream’s ever watchful optics, his critiques, his notice, with this moment- flashing red optics landing on you, you could hear something in your programming, instinct woven into your frame-
You couldn't tell if it was your voice or Starscream's, but the words were clear:
'If you're going to make a claim, do it properly.'
In the dream your servos moved on their own, from large dark wings to the curve of his canopy. In the dream, the larger mech moves easily with you, wings spreading as your digits dig into panels- and that, too, feels right, like this wasn't acquiescence, but agreement, a question asked and responded to and answered. His frame leans into yours easily, comfortably, filling your palms.
Do it properly.
Your servos and digits moved slowly up his waist, feeling that difference in size as you pressed yourself against his back, your wings rolling as you plant a palm flat between his wings and pushed down, watching with satisfaction as his rolled in their own want, the need to be claimed, his frame moving to your unspoken command.
It made your fans burn against your face, pressing your canopy to his back, your intake opening in the dreaming and the waking world to vent heat out. Pushing him down came with no resistance, your arms slipping around him as you press your face between his wings, nuzzling against those shoulder-panels. Your intake moves over his neck, mapping out the unique spinal spikes fanning out on either side of the strut, a detail you hadn't known you'd noticed, added Decepticon decoration that would prevent anyone or anything foolish enough from grabbing him recklessly-
And your glossa could move around them so easily, one by one, fans whirring away at the way that soft quiet voice had stuck in your processor, and how perhaps you wanted to hear him whimper a little, moan a little as you teased him with your glossa, teeth catching on plates, leaning him against the bridge railing in front of Starscream as your digits scratch over plating for trying to take your Commander's attention from you.
Mine.
Starscream's optics, glowing like dark fire on the both of you as you pressed this other flier down, showed Starscream that you were worthy of being looked at with such desire, your denta finding a wing and biting-
And for a moment, the dream focused only on that gleam of bright silver denta, your own sunk into metal derma, that Seeker’s intake parted with that deep navy his were stained with-
Starscream’s grin a wicked darksteel crescent cut into velvet blackness around you, his optics red suns above it.
The sound you made in your audials was loud, your fans roaring as you're woken by the way your wings nearly jolted you out of the berth.
And there was that feeling, like you had been caught in one of those Terran hurricanes, that you were being drenched in cold water. Over you-
Those red, pitfire optics of Starscream staring over you, a servo raised as if to shake you awake.
For a long moment, you hold each other's gaze, your fans stuttering as you take in the whole of his face, the red light of it illuminating the dark around you, casting his faceplates in black shadow.
Slowly, you watch as he pulls his hand back from you, and you feel your fans start to normalise, flickers of your dream bringing back the heat in waves, slowing the process.
"...sir?" You manage, your voice nearly too quiet to hear over your own fans. He had managed to rest his claws on the edge of the berth, and you can see it- a look of contemplation on his faceplate, as he looked down your frame.
"...quite the dream you must have been having," he stated, his voice measured and level. "Caught yourself in combat in your sleep?"
It was an out he was offering to you. You could see that- he was allowing you to lie to him, to give yourself that moment of dignity.
Because you heard the way your frame clicked when you deliberately closed your interface panels. And you knew he had heard it too, the only other noise in the room from your whirring fans, and the soft buzzing of his own.
So you nodded.
Raising a brow-ridge, Starscream looked over your frame, watched as you tried to force yourself to calm down, the way panels kept fluttering up and around to vent excess heat.
"...I hope you won, at least," he said carefully, and you feel another burst of heat burn through your face, your chassis, yanking your optics from him as you pull your legs to your canopy.
"...I. Yeah," you offered, the flashes of the way you had pinned the larger Seeker down in front of Starscream, trying to force the images out of your processor, your servos tight around your knees. "I guess I did."
Starscream nodded stiffly, before straightening his back, wings held high and stiff, unreadable all around.
"Good," he stated, before moving to the desk. "Get some proper rest now, will you? I won't have you exhausted from dream combat when real combat is always around the corner."
You almost snapped at him- maybe another night, you would have, considering this new wave of frustration that kept finding its way beneath your plates. But after that dream, how could you ask him to return to your shared berth? Instead, the words flying out of your intake were-
"I'm rested enough, I think."
Your pedes were swinging off the edge of the berth before you realised what was happening, but you commit, standing with forced ease.
"You get yourself some rest before you fall over. I'm..." You struggled for an excuse, before you found something at least mostly true. "I need a walk to clear my head.”
Something like a muddled concern brushes against your EM field- and there was that heat of frustration, embarrassment, like all of the Seekers around you knew a big secret that you had no access to, like you were the odd one out on some stupid puerile process that everyone was being so forgiving of.
And maybe for now, that was too much. So much had changed, and this difference was too much to handle. Before Starscream could agree with you, you’ve whirled around, making your way out of the habsuite and into the halls.

Echo himself had his own schedule for rest and recharge- the higher in the ranks he had climbed, the more freedom he had been afforded, and soon enough, he had been allowed a fairly sizeable habsuite for himself, something that must have been made for a mech in a higher size-class than he was.
Or for a completed trine.
It made the lack in his life… noticeable. That emptiness a reflection of his own missing pieces. He didn’t spend a lot of time in that room.
So running into you was as inevitable as running into any other member of the ship’s higher ranking, really. If it hadn’t happened by now, it would have happened eventually-
And the fates, in his processor, had deigned it all too amusing to have him running into you on the turn of a corner, trying to rid himself of the whirring thoughts in his own processor.
Pits.
His wings lifted automatically when you caught sight of him, and he could feel the spiking of your frustration, could see the way your wings trembled with something held back in your processor.
And there you felt it again, that odd, discomforting spiking of concern, the older Seeker wafting waves of something that felt so like Thundercracker’s attempts at placation.
Gritting your denta, you feel your wings lift, and lean into the feeling, raising them on your back as you glared at the other mech.
“Watch where you’re going!” You hissed it out, a harsh parody of Starscream’s tone carried on your voice. The look on the other mech’s face had you reeling back as you recognized him, it was him-
And then came the guilt, your wings falling as you remembered the dream, images flashing in your processor and fans whirring harshly as you struggled with a myriad of thoughts in your processor.
“I’m- I’m sorry,” his voice was soft, thickly accented with Vosian, and you feel another wave of guilt- this was somebody from home, and it wasn’t his fault that Starscream had taken a liking to him, with the way his finish showed soft, decorative waves of navy and indigo on black, something artistic that looked so similar to old posters from the academy days-
And you’re shaking your helm as he continued to speak, his words mostly unheard until “-I was just on my way to drop off my report to Starscream-”
Those words had you snapping harshly back into your bad mood, lack of recharge buzzing at the back of your processor. You bristled at the sight of him, all huge and massive with those wings at a low, deliberately non-threatening angle, his optics flickering to your wings, back to your face. Flick. Wings to face.
Why did he keep looking at your wings?
"What's your designation?" You felt the way heat gathered in your chassis, the way your wings flared wider, as you glared up at the taller seeker. His optics ran along the jagged lines they made on your back, and you widened them for his attention, lifted them high as your frustration rose, trying to lift his gaze back to your face.
How often did Starscream have to repeat himself?
The larger mech collected himself, his wings rolling in that undeniably interested way, and you couldn't quite grapple with the feeling in your spark, the feeling that this mech was appreciating the attention, your glare, the heat thrumming through your EM field.
You spread the wings- your wings- a little wider, and raise your hand- setting it into the collar of his chassis, taking satisfaction in his little yelp as you yanked him down to look you in the eye properly.
You were Starscream's Cadet, and there was more than a small part of you getting a little tired with how little respect that had given you.
"Designation. Please," you added, a sudden wash of more of that twisted guilt trying to overcome you again, and you shake it off- what was this, what had gotten into you, where had all this viciousness-
But wasn’t it so earned? You were a Decepticon.
And at the very least, you were the Cadet of Starscream. You may not fully understand his actions, his crimes, the ways he had hurt other people- but truly, you didn’t need to.
All you wanted to do now was to command a little bit of that respect that you saw him wield on the best of his days.
You almost don’t hear that soft voice as he finally answers, your EM field spiking and rolling over his, drawing your attention to hear him.
"...it's Echo," the other mech murmured, his voice so soft and the feeling of whirring fans on your face so gentle that your processor nearly stalled. You can feel it- the waves of his EM field washing over you, against yours, and it really was appreciation, respect asked for and returned.
Your dream flashed through your processor, and your digits tighten on his plates. Echo holds still for a moment-
Before lowering his head more into your grip, his fans whirring softly as his wings twitched again- stilled.
A question asked and answered.
You cleared your throat, feeling your wings climb high on your back- but this time, Echo's optics stay on yours, flickering around to take in the details of your faceplate, the quirk of your browplates, the point of your audials, the crack over your nose. And in that shared moment, you could see each detail of his face, his frame- the spikes you remembered from your dream, the large, sweeping audials that could probably pick up even the quietest of sounds, optics a red that you had once heard Knockout refer to as cherry-
All the while, a hum was shared between you. A warmth of… something implacably intense between you, that threatened to overwhelm your mind, the way it made your plates lift and tighten in waves over your frame.
Alone here, in this hall you could do anything- claim this Seeker-
Pit, even if you weren’t alone, would that stop you?
In your dream you had felt those eyes on you and it had felt so right.
You don't know where the thought comes from, but you feel it settle firmly in your shoulders, your wings, your frame creaking as you tighten your grip for a moment, staring hard into cherry optics- before you manage to push it off, letting Echo go with a soft shove, staggering slightly as you feel the weight of your wings before righting yourself again.
"Echo, then," you state, trying to regain your composure, processor quieting from the distance put between you. "You will deliver your reports to me, from now on. Commander Starscream has enough on his servos, and you're going to help me carry that weight. Think you're up to the task?"
The words felt odd in your intake for their formality. But there was that thought again-
You were Starscream's Cadet.
Perhaps it was time you let yourself live up to that. And, perhaps one day-
Beyond that.
Echo straightened his back, and you wonder if you can hear the sound of his whole vocal processor reset- before the taller Seeker nodded, raising a servo in a quick, informal salute.
"...I think that's a task I'm up to," he returned, his voice low and quiet as he mirrored your words. "Is there... anything else you need me for, Cadet?"
His wings continued to flutter, and you consider what this mech could offer you-
That there was something so perfectly different from Thundercracker, but similar enough that it felt like…
You could understand why Starscream would desire for somebody so calm. Somebody that you could have at your wing-
Somebody that would lower themself into the pit to meet your gaze.
“...no, Echo,” you state, hesitating for a moment- before patting a hand to his shoulder, moving past him in the hall. “That will be all.”
As you make your way further down the hall, you feel the way his EM field almost seemed to cling to you, extricating itself reluctantly from you.
Down the hall, you don’t see the way his wings roll, but a part of you still does feel it.
Cadet AU belongs to @radioactiverats, Echo belongs (mostly) to me. I say mostly cuz, well, we've really been cooking with grease when it comes to Seeker stuff. I hope you guys like Echo!
Trining instincts are hard to deal with, especially when there's a big Warframe that needs his wings preened.
I suck at summaries but this is about 3500~ words of horny wing-preening for Cadet au, I hope y'all enjoy~
Close Quarters Preening
It had started off as a simple annoyance, you seeing Echo looking so...
Unpolished.
Literally, it looked like he had flown through some kind of tree, leaves and moss clinging to his plates. And yet, there was Sunstorm, quite obviously flirting with Echo. You see a green flier roll his optics and feel some level of validation for your frustration.
And that buzzing energy hadn’t ever gone away- you felt your hackles raise every time you saw Echo, nowadays, every time he brought you the reports you had told him to bring. Dreaming in the night had you drawing claws down the berth hard enough to scrape it- Starscream ordering you to buff it out yourself and very obviously trying to conceal his annoyance, his concern at your actions.
You could feel it whenever Echo looked at you. His eyes would still trail over your wings, but it was... different, than the looks had been before. More appraising, cherry optics following the lines over your wings before roving them to your shoulders, following lines up to the points of your audials. He wasn't even subtle about it, his own wings rolling, twitching, stopping as he allowed himself to look.
You felt the join of your wings on your back and they felt… less heavy, each time you see him. This fire beneath your plates didn’t feel unpleasant, either- there was something to it that wanted you to fuel it, breathe more life into it.
Seeing Sunstorm talking to him in the energon bay, visibly flirting with the larger mech? That felt like fuel enough.
It seemed that Sunstorm had inherited some of his source-code's tastes in larger bots, standing like some harsh parody of Starscream against the wall as his optics dragged lazily over Echo’s frame. The loading bay is filled with all kinds of cons doing their work, unloading energon cubes after a hard mission, and Sunstorm is speaking with him, fluttering his wings in a way that was uncannily similar to Starscream's.
But there was no real edge to his smirks or smiles, the loose way he held himself not coming from self-practiced ease or bitterly won survival, but a harsh imitation.
And he was fluttering at Echo and you couldn't really understand why it made your panels burn.
Why it had you storming up to the two, the air shivering with the noise of your EM field as you look at Sunstorm, your optics bright enough that you can see them on his polished canopy.
Fire.
Twin suns in a blue sky.
You can feel the way Sunstorm’s EM field fluctuates in surprise, see his intake open to speak-
But you turn sharply on your heel to look at Echo, your back to the brightly coloured mech, and latch a servo onto one of those prettily rolling wings, wings that showed the hard work of a flier of the field.
Fluttering away like that, and your wings look like this-
Shaking your helm, you tug at Echo's wing, feeling the other mech allow for that grip, that surge of rightness between your fields as he moves with you.
"Do you realise what your wings look like? You look like you flew through a swamp." It came out harsher than you'd meant for it, and you felt a wash of self-disgust at that anger, a wave of guilt, before tamping it down as solidly as you could. "You're due your reports on the energon mines anyways. You're coming with me."
You also can feel the rise in radiation from Sunstorm, his bright wings flaring at you, and you can feel his interest in waves. And there was that annoyance you felt rise in you that you felt less guilty over, looking over your shoulder as Sunstorm moved his servos while he talked.
"Cadet," he intoned smoothly. He was so careful, to hold in his Vosian accent, wasn't he? You found it more than a little annoying. "So nice to see you again... how have you adapted to your wings~?"
You feel his optics on them and flare your wings indignantly, deliberately, and nearly say something-
But Echo simply turns a wing on Sunstorm, his focus on you, his frame towering over both you and the other mech.
Unimportant.
That brushing of his EM fields- your optics brightened with surprise, feeling Echo’s active disinterest in Sunstorm- the way it so calmed you, your wings shifting more comfortably on your back.
His optics weren’t just looking for details in your wings anymore.
You could feel them trailing your audials, too. Watched them, as they circled your helm, before settling back to look you in the eye.
"We’d stay to chat, but… the energon mine reports are due, sir," Echo stated, voice soft but tone firm, grounding you back into the moment. It occurred to you- he and Sunstorm couldn't be too different in rank, could they? Sunstorm was bristling, the radiation… unpleasant, prickling at your plates. But you stand your ground, cocking a brow-plate at the taller mech as he forced a smile onto his face.
“Of course,” he dripped. “And I only hope that Starscream receives them well.” You were reminded of the exact ugly tone used by Starscream on Megatron.
You felt the bubbling of anger and frustration build up in you, your plates visibly flaring, and nearly snap back-
And then there was that wave of Echo’s EM field, brushing against, around yours, his servo on your back. The tips of his digits were careful, finding a spot between your wings, extended clawtips working gently into the grooves.
No need.
No need, it felt like that wave of energy was saying, to get so annoyed over Sunstorm- and his touch felt good, deft digits finding their way into a spot that had been sore for Primus knows how long.
You see and feel Sunstorm’s optics drawn down at the contact. Your grip on Echo’s wing tightens, and you feel your EM field flare, but not with the same rage as before, Echo’s own energies flowing into yours and smoothing those sharp edges, a communication of frustration and gentle assurance. He wanted to leave with you, so why not leave with him?
Was that a settling sensation in your spark? Something you hadn’t felt in weeks without exhaustion, overstimulation, a blanket over your head to block out all light and sound-
Your frame creaks slightly at the change in temperature as you in-vent, cooling quickly, before turning to Echo again.
“Let’s go, then.”
~
Starscream was not yet back at your habsuite, busy with collecting reports from other mechs around the ship. You’d feel guilty not helping more if the last mission hadn’t gone so well- and there was something of another need you were trying to fill right now, anyways.
And at least it gave the two of you some… privacy.
It was almost comical, the difference in size between you and Echo. Your wing-spans were fairly comparable, but he did have to sit on the floor in front of you while you sat on the berth to reach his wings properly.
In spite of his size, this almost felt… easy. Soothing, to work your claws into dark grooves in metal, feeling the way his frame shivered while cleaning grime out of spoilers, scraping moss from a plate to a pleased shudder. His finish was matte, but there were fine details both etched and painted into him, smooth indigo lending to hints of purple and navy over the otherwise stealth-black. You feel yourself calm as you clean through patterns, optics trailing over them as he ex-vented softly, wings shifting into your touch.
Your digits work carefully into his plates- it’d been so hard to retract your claws lately, anxiety and frustration keeping you too on edge to relax them back in. But right now, they were perfect for scraping away that bit of debris lodged in Echo's wings, panels lifting to your careful touch. You could still feel that flair of annoyance towards Sunstorm, towards everything, towards yourself and towards nothing-
But Echo was harder to be frustrated over, his EM field flowing back towards you in soft waves, the air humming with the low thrum of you both in the low-frequency communication. Your legs settle on either side of him as he leans back, and you get to appreciate the feeling of his frame against yours, moving from the rudders that fluttered at the base of his spine up to the wings proper, your knees pressing to either side of his waist between them and feeling every little motion. For a moment, you let your servos lay flat against his wings, watching them, feeling them move- he was huge, a different size-class, wings built to cut smoothly through the sky.
Your optics trail along the long spikes along his spinal strut, and you remember your dream. You remember how you had trailed your glossa along those spikes, and heat spikes through your EM field, Echo’s only reaction a small twitch in his shoulders. You don’t quite notice how your legs tighten against Echo’s sides, but you do feel how he shudders between them, his wings flicking high before he very deliberately stills them.
“...you can get closer, you know,” he murmurs, his voice only low but not quiet, the sound of it thrumming through his whole body. With how you were nearly pressed against his back, your frame shivered at the vibrations it caused.
And you remembered your dream again.
Those spikes on either side of his spine twitched almost invitingly, their own motion rippling down through his wings.
And that flare of heat in your spark felt less like anxiety, and more like…
Excitement.
Clearing your vocals, you try to take control of your free-wheeling processor, shaking it slightly, before firmly gripping his wings.
You feel your jaw clench with the urge to bite arise as you lean closer.
“You’re sure?”
Your tone is sharper than intended, but he doesn’t flinch- his wings pressing closer to you, closing you off from the rest of the room.
“Sure enough. You said it looked like I flew through a swamp.”
Not so much anymore, he didn’t. You’d done a good job- a pile of detritus and debris on a tarp on the floor the only evidence that his wings were ever the mess you’d found them in. What was left behind was the artwork beneath, the dark matte black that blended in with his frame, the smell of the solvent you had used in tougher areas.
His chassis is warm against your frame. Warmer than it had been when you’d started. And his wings were moving beneath your servos, as still as he tried to keep them.
And there was the slightest- the faintest brushing of his EM fields against yours.
Please?
It was hard to feel that anger that edged your energies when somebody so gently asked you to touch them.
It pulls you in, as much as the need to claim had drawn you in in that dream- and you press your intake gently to one long spine, digits gripping into his ailerons as you run your lips along it. You hear the way he draws in air through his intake, the soft whirring of fans as he ex-vented, and feel your own wings twitch. Your lips close against the sharp accent to his wing, and you let your optics shutter, letting yourself take in the feeling of smooth metal in your mouth.
More?
Your processor buzzes, and you feel your canopy press against Echo’s air-brake, your servos sliding down his wings to grip at where they joined to his back. His EM field brushes against yours insistently as you gently drag denta over his spines.
And you could feel your own, like a closed servo opening, weaving together into his energies slowly. Your claws draw lines down his spinal strut, your legs tightening around his waist as you press yourself firmly to his back.
More.
A feeling less than a word, shared between the two of you as Echo’s wings began to roll, flick, flutter slowly, fanning out on either side of you and drawing in more of that warm air around you. They move you against him, and you feel your own wings- heavy, but not unwelcome- roll in a slow mirror of Echo’s, their weight pushing you closer to him. Your flick your glossa out against his neck, working it firmly over the mesh, and you hear him sharply in-vent, his wings jolting upright-
And there’s something soft, a whining whistle to his ex-vent, his legs jolting slightly, the surge of warmth and then heat and then good washing over you, collecting in your canopy.
Primus, this had been just a preening, hadn’t it? And now, you were pressing your face against Echo’s neck, nipping and biting along the mesh of it as he panted in front of you.
More!
Your wings twitch with the electricity of it, and you feel the heat that builds behind your array panels, clawtips digging into his wings as your denta sink further into the mesh of his neck, savouring the way cables give way beneath your fangs. Echo presses back- and you feel his whole frame jolt when your overheating array panel settles into the base of his spinal strut.
Contact.
You shudder against his back and you can feel the way his body jolts, a low moan slipping from his intake before he could stop it, and you can’t ignore the spread of heat up your chassis, gripping into your spark. The way that Echo’s soft voice bounces in the room fills your audials, your processor buzzing with the soft roll of low vibrations. It was good, it felt good, to have something to hold, wrap around, your EM fields merging at the edges as you press your panels into the ridges of his spine. You push closer, intake opening wide over his wing as your glossa finds new grooves to work into, your denta finding panels to catch against. You start to roll your hips against his back, hot array panels finding that dip against his spinal strut between his rudders, feeling how it slid right into place, locking together into the grooves of his back.
You hear him cry out- at first, wordless, before his helm falls back with a soft cry of “Yes!”, his EM field flaring and spiking in waves, and there was something different-
Like there was something in your very spark that responded, burning down your chassis as you rolled your hips into his back.
Yes.
Heat burnt paths down from your hips as you tighten your knees against his waist. You sink your denta into his wing, uncaring of how harshly you bit this time, only feeling the way that heat spread through your chassis, your wings flaring wide behind you as all of that frustration and anger and rage you had felt bled away into excitement, claiming-
The singing warmth of pleasure coursing its way through your frame as the two of you moan together, your intake firmly on his wing, denta sinking into derma, energon staining your tongue as his frame shudders against yours.
You nearly don’t hear the door slide open, barely reacting to it anyways, optics brightening lazily as they flick up-
And of course, it’s Starscream, a pile of datapads in his arms.
You immediately still, but there was something about the burning in your chassis that had you tightening your hold on Echo, the other mech venting heat loudly, your own fans adding to the noise in the room.
There were a dozen expressions that flash across Starscream’s faceplates, and you could read only so many-
Shock, astonishment, you got that easily enough, and could understand. What you hadn't expected, though, was how Starscream's face seemed to settle, his intake pulling smoothly into a smirk, his optics narrowing slowly as his helm angled to the side.
In front of you, Echo’s wings continue to roll, his venting quieting slowly.
And as Starscream watched, your jaw tightened on Echo’s wing, metal creaking, your processor buzzing to come up with something, anything for an explanation, an excuse-
But the smile on Starscream's face remained, and before you can say anything, he's already stepped back over the threshold, servo on the doorframe as he leaned against it, hip popping. Red optics find yours, and you do your best to hold his gaze even as Echo's shoulder, your denta still sunk firmly into his wing.
Your spark pulsed, your wings flared high- and as you watch Starscream, your claws tighten ever so slightly on Echo’s wings, a possessive buzzing running beneath your plates.
"...I think I forgot a few datapads," he stated, his voice taking on that whistling accent that was shared between the three of you, the air humming with the satisfaction in his EM field. “Cadet, make sure you’re finished by the time I return, yes~?”
You feel Echo’s wing jolt in your intake and let go- finally seeing the way your denta had dented the metal. Nothing that would impede flight, nor transformation- and there was something that looked right about it, like until now-
Until now, he had been missing something you had seen in other Seeker’s wings, other trine-bound Seeker’s wings.
You feel a trembling in your frame, your wings, as you pull back from Echo, feeling the stain of energon against the corner of your intake.
“I. I think we’re done,” you manage, staring over the marks you had left with a feeling of… satisfaction, of rightness. But your buzzing processor was growing overwhelmed with sensation, your hips pulling back from Echo’s body, your EM field retreating from his. You feel his confusion for a moment- his disappointment.
But it’s quickly smoothed over as he stands, saluting quickly to Starscream.
“I can retrieve them, sir,” he stated, his voice more level than you’d expected possible- his fans having quieted. He tosses a glance over his shoulder to you, and there’s a wave of gentle, sincere sympathy that you feel oddly privy to-
His wings roll at a soft angle towards you, open, giving you room, giving you space to move yourself.
Stepping out of the room, he’s followed by Starscream’s surprised optics- all three of you had known he was lying about other data-pads, Echo’s own resting neatly on Starscream’s desk, and Starscream turns his puzzled look to you.
It didn’t occur to either of you that you and Echo had just shared a private communication between your fields.
He pointed down the hall. “Shall I call him back?” He asked, but you were shaking your helm. He then pointed at the tarp covered in debris on the floor- mostly, on the floor, some leaves having shifted in your… activities, with Echo.
“Then I suppose you’ll be cleaning that up, Cadet?”
Your vocal processor yet to properly reset, you nod your helm weakly, moving to stand on shaky struts.
There was a scent in the air, where Echo had been-
It soothed your racing spark, just a touch.
~
"Did you know what you were doing?"
It was later, the two of you in berth together, the habsuite tidied of all mess from the preening.
You feel that rise in irritation, tempered sure, but it still prickles beneath your plates. That you were new to something, and everyone else around you was so privy to all of this secret language.
"...no. I just. Did what felt... good."
Starscream's thoughtful hum beside you had your wings twitch, before he tightens his arm ever so slightly around you, his chassis pressing to the space between your wings.
"I think the big guy thought it felt good too~"
You try to squirm away at first, a growl in your throat, but he laughs- the sound warm in your audials, his EM field washing over yours in that oddly deep way it had been recently.
“...his name is Echo,” you mutter, letting that little bit of defensiveness win out, your servos resting over Starscream’s arms.
He rests his helm against yours and you let that warmth blend into your field, your wings losing that stiff feeling to them as he hums against you.
“Echo, eh? I hope I haven’t scared him off~”
Pleased.
He was pleased with you, with… whatever he had seen, the realisation of it prickling under your plates.
Your claws sink into the grooves of his arms, and you hear that comfortable purr behind you.
“...I don’t think he’s that easily scared off,” you murmur back, relaxing back into Starscream.
Cadet/Cadet au belongs to @radioactiverats, this is another character that we've been playing with- meet Foxfire, seeing Starscream's Cadet, three different times-
And times before he'd been noticed himself.
3000+ words
Three (and more) times
~~~
(Part 1)
~~~
The first time Foxfire had properly seen the Cadet had been at Swerve's- and, being an appreciator of all things earnest, he had quickly taken a liking to the little Seeker- your cerulean blue a refreshing bit of old colour that he had thought had no longer existed in the Decepticon ranks, not that he paid as close attention as he could have. It was nice to see- it had even been nice to see Skywarp letting loose, having lost himself in the crowd as though they were back on Vos again. He had become more malicious than he'd been back home, that bond between his trinemates loosened until none of the three had really seemed happy or stable, regardless of their high ranking. There was something of his old self when he'd decided to bring you along on his excursion, and it almost let Fox forget about how the war had changed all of you. It had been a long time since he had seen that kind of exuberance, that joy of life and there had been... something more comfortable, Swerve's letting itself open up to the newbie in the ranks.
That was, at least, until his trine-leader had appeared, Thundercracker close by his wing.
Starscream.
The whole of the bar went so quiet so fast, and Foxfire along with it. Fox remembered hearing rumours of you being attached to Starscream somehow, and some of those rumours? Many of them? Had not been kind. Seeker processors often leaned towards a more lascivious sense of humour but there had been more of that dark edge for what assumptions had been made about the Decepticon second-in-command and his…
Pet.
Foxfire had felt that discomfort in his spark, remembering that red mech from Vos, another trine-leader like himself, having pinned some of the fastest and most powerful fliers around for the thrill of it, caught Thundercracker and Skywarp, mechs that could shake the air and disappear into it.
Foxfire knew from experience how hard that could be.
And for such a long time, Fox had wondered if maybe the mech that had managed to pin him all those vorns ago was still in there, or if his spark had been harrowed away to make room for something much more nasty.
Seeing you nearly run up to him, overclocked on the lightest brews of engex and swaying to the music, Fox felt his hackles raise defensively, narrowing optics at the mech that hadn't so much as looked his way since the war had begun.
A mech that, at one time, had promised to bring Foxfire's trine into his flock, that together, they would be powerful, magnificent in the skies or in any endeavours, that had been Starscream's promise that night on Vos so long ago-
How easy it was to believe in poisoned words against Starscream, when he so clearly used that skillful charm to weave his way out of the most dangerous of descents, and away from those that wanted to be closest to him?
And yet, there was the little blue jet in you, the one that had been rumoured to be nothing but a pet at best to the Decepticon second-in-command.
Something that sounded so nasty there, but had been a gentle, claiming title that had Fox’s audials burning at the memory of, the way Starscream had whispered it so softly, that ashy rasp in his processor playing on repeat.
But you didn’t look like some sad little pet. You hadn’t spoken like one, at the bar, though there had been an endearing shyness to you. Hey, everyone’s nervous their first time at the bar, after all!
It had made Foxfire a little wary, thinking about Starscream and the mech he thought he knew. But your smile, your easy little wing rolls, the way your arms wrapped around Starscream’s chassis…
‘Super cool’.
The Starscream he’d heard rumours of and seen in combat was definitely not one Foxfire would call ‘super cool’. But the Starscream he had known all those vorns ago…
The way his wings jolted, before relaxing, clearly relieved at your safety, your comfort around him palpable to anyone in the room. And there was no anger directed towards you, the mech that was doing rather well for themself in spite of being overclocked. Fox had mentally cheered for you, seeing you stay on your pedes.
Foxfire felt his wings lower, relaxing, as Starscream's servo rested gently on your back, holding you carefully, before turning his frustration out on his trine-mate.
And again, he felt that there was something less venomous about Starscream's ranting, his own wings held stiffly, as if he could hide his relief from those that paid attention. The rest of the bar fell back into the ease of normalcy. He hadn't come guns blazing, and there was something more than a little familiar about seeing a trine-leader chew out his trine-mate for doing something irresponsible. And maybe few others would see it, but Starscream's faceplates had flashed from angry, to amused in brief moments, like he couldn't contain it-
Like he himself could still feel those echoes of Vos in this bar of Swerve's.
Foxfire let himself finish his drink, before making his way back to his own trine, processor filled to the brim with thoughts on somebody that had once promised a bond with him-
And to you, the little flier that had set those gears turning.
~~~
(Part 2)
~~~
The second time Foxfire had seen you, it was shortly after you had received your new wings-
And there was still something in his wings that tingled unpleasantly, when he thought about his contribution to the whole ordeal.
As if he should feel this guilt anymore, after vorns of that questionable experimentation on any number of dead metals, giving new life to them.
He had been trying to speak to Starscream again- trying, being the operative word. Some days Foxfire really wondered how much Starscream remembered or forgot, how much he forced himself to ignore while forging ahead for the 'Decepticon cause'. It wouldn’t be too different, Fox supposed, than the path he’d had to take.
He remembered when the last Winglords had fallen, and all that was left to take their place, to look towards, was Starscream.
All these vorns later, after multiple solar-cycles of trying to casually speak to him again, trying, reaching, pulling away and nearly giving up, and Foxfire had Starscream coming to him, asking, of all Seekers, who, who would have compatible wings, who would not be missed-
And Fox had remembered the gentler mech he had seen at the bar, allowing the little blue jet to cling to him, nuzzle into his plates, your armor unmarred and your wings, while a bit unpreened, a lovely, gentle arc. Like you hadn't been at war.
Like Foxfire hadn’t brought his trine into the Decepticon cause at the urging of the very mech you had been clinging to.
This was the same mech that came to Foxfire to ask him whose wings to pry off to save you, give you flight again.
And Foxfire felt something in his spark ache for you, just a little- but he hadn't actually gotten to see you after that repair. He hadn't actually gotten to see how you wore those wings- in another life, even with his little medical experience and his preference towards making… living sculptures, Starscream may have come to Foxfire for the healing of your wings, those cerulean blue wings of Vos.
Perhaps that was another painful realisation. Recognition of Foxfire’s own change in himself, that in the vorns that had passed, Starscream was not the only mech who had had lost some of that gentle care.
At least now, there was a new change, it seemed- something in the air, something that moved around you, greater than just your EM fields, and even the grounders seemed able to tell that something was up.
In the halls of the higher ranked Seekers, he was sure now that everyone would see you.
The claim had been so loud, Foxfire had wondered if his own receptors had become oversensitive again- but looking down the hall in your direction, he nearly didn't recognize you.
Small frame, the blue unmistakably yours, but those wings- massive, dark, nearly spreading across the hall as you staked your claim.
The air shivered with the statement, with the wake of quiet Echo left behind him, with Starscream’s astonished shout of surprise-
Foxfire had to chuckle to himself when he returned to his habsuite, thinking on the SIC’s myriad of shifting facial expressions, all focused on you. Your cracked faceplate, wings that seemed mostly mismatched to your frame, the proud and confident stance you held yourself in- and how well, it seemed, that you had grown into those wings. Fox wondered if you realised how strongly that Echo would respond to a claim from you, with wings from his former leader, and he smiled, curling up with his still recharging trinemates, warm and pressing around and into his frame like puzzle pieces.
Foxfire smiled to himself.
Oh, but how fun it would be-
To see a new trine formed properly.

(Part 3)

The third time he had seen you was shortly after your daring rescue of Starscream.
If it had been any other mech, Megatron would have openly stated that he had been impressed- and yet, you had saved Starscream, not a mech that Megatron was always so eager to keep around.
Things had gone back to an uncomfortable level of normalcy after Starscream’s return- and again, Foxfire found himself trying to reach towards the other trine-leader, making his living nightmares for the Decepticon cause but finding less and less inspiration to create them.
And there you were, another creature he had helped create. And there was… Echo, too, and Sunstorm, and there was something there, in the loading bay that day-
Sunstorm clearly trying to flirt his way into building a trine again, Fox had simply thought with bored interest, until there you were, your servos firm on Echo’s wings, tiny as you were in comparison to him. Fox eyed the null-rays adorning your shoulders, recalling how he and his trine had chosen other alterations to their frames, less costly, less painful-
And there you stood with your wings held wide, your stance even, staking a claim on one flier over another trying to court him. It was vicious-
There was something in it that called to the artist in Foxfire, that part of him he only really was able to let out while building his monsters, his nightmares.
It was beautiful.
It felt like fire.
A spark reigniting.
Your eyes burned right into Sunstorm’s irradiated EM field, and Foxfire watched his wings twitch in annoyance-
Before Echo turned to look at you. Look over your wings, yes- but Echo really looked at you, his frame turning so deliberately to ignore Sunstorm, wings rolling suggestively, but so casually as he took you in, as you held his wing firmly.
Fox had to smile- there really was just, something so familiar about seeing all of this, seeing the way that Sunstorm prickled before backing off, as though he had never flirted with the larger Seeker in the first place. You had dragged Echo off, the larger mech moving with you with a comfortable ease, like there was no place he’d rather be.
For a moment, Foxfire watched you two leave, feeling the warmth in his spark at something… new, forming, from the once so closed-off Cadet.
It was cute, too, seeing such a little mech take the lead so effectively over a big warframe.
Sunstorm’s radiation drew Foxfire’s attention from the other seekers, and Fox turned to see the other mech roll his wings invitingly.
Foxfire pulled a very obviously disgusted expression, wings dropping sharply and fields flaring with something that could be translated easily into ‘eat slag and offline’, before turning on his heel. He had a trine, his trine, and even if he didn’t-
There was another mech he wanted to see more, and even if Sunstorm shared his face, he was no Starscream.

Part 0
~~~
You had only seen the mech known as Foxfire once, before everything had gone to the Pit- well, twice in one day, really.
And it had been during class, of all things.
It hadn't even started, Starscream was late. Starscream was never late, and in fact, was frequently expecting others to be early. It was discomforting, disquieting, and it set the entire class' energies on edge. A small argument had started in your group, until finally, you were pushed to go find him- the least likely to get in trouble for it, apparently- he had to be somewhere.
And you only needed to re-enter the academy from the flight grounds to see where Starscream had gotten to.
Standing further down the hall with another Seeker, just a touch shorter and sleeker in build than Starscream himself, neon green and black plating standing out in the dark halls. You almost call out to Starscream-
But there was something... different, about his face. Something you hadn't seen before, something relaxed.
Starscream's whole frame actually seemed so at ease around this flier, who talked excitedly with a freely waving servo, a roll of painted foil under his other arm, and it occurred to you that this might be one of the academy's artists. But why would he be with Starscream, of all mechs? Was Starscream somebody that appreciated art?
But there was something- something about the way Starscream eyed the other mech, that even from a distance you could see. It was the way his optics trailed over the slimmer jet's wings, rested on his white faceplates, the sharp angles of this mech's black helm undeniably shapely.
You receive a ping from your classmates. ‘Well?’
Shaking your head, you make your way closer, making a sharp crackle in your vocals to ask for attention, the two mechs leaning close together before Starscream jolted back, his frame snapping into something much stiffer as he looked at you.
"Cadet! What are you-"
"Sir," you start. "We've been waiting- class?"
His optics flicked a few times, and you could tell he was checking his internal cronometer-
And they brightened again, rolling in their sockets as he looked back to the green mech.
"Foxfire, I've been neglecting my duties," he drawled, his tone much more casual than you'd heard it before. "Shall we continue this later?"
"Whenever you like~" the mech's tone was playful, and you cocked a brow-plate when he bowed, his arm rolling in a dramatic flourish. But, he seemed graceful strutting away, and you could almost feel the heat coming from Starscream's EM field-
He looked away from the other flier after a long moment, before gesturing for you to lead the way.
"Shall we, Cadet?"
~~
You were taking your break from drills on a balcony when you saw him again- he was marching up to Starscream, arms empty, a wide, jagged grin on his face and a pleased roll to his narrow wings. You couldn't hear from that far above, your audials not yet adjusted for reconnaissance, but the excitement of the new mech was palpable.
And there was something about the familiarity in the way he moved around Starscream, stepping lightly on his pedes around him as the two mechs spoke. You couldn't quite place what it was- until he slipped his arm around Starscream's waist, leaning close to whisper something, Starscream's frame moving into his touch with ease.
You had expected Starscream to pull away- but his wings told all that could see that he was content, pleased, even, letting them roll slowly on his back, darksteel faceplate contrasting with the stark white of the other mech’s.
You felt your face flush as you watched as the green mech danced back, wings flicking playfully as he gestured for Starscream to follow. Starscream seemed to consider for a moment, unaware of how you watched them from above, his face suddenly taking on such a mischievous look, his excitement clear in the glow of his optics, the crooked pull of his smirk. The other mech reached out his servo, before darting back, his wings flaring in invitation, and Starscream-
Ah.
There it was.
Starscream's wings in the classic roll, drop, forward flicker of frag-me flutters, heel-thrusters boosting him closer as he reached to grab for the other mech.
Your optics widen, energon rushing to your faceplates as heat prickled under them. Was he really going to-?
With most of the rest of the class in the air, you watched as your instructor ditched class, cyan servos grabbing onto and interlocking with black digits. It would almost be sneaking off-
If you hadn't heard their cackling echoing from the grounds.
~~
"Did you see that green mech with Starscream?"
Your roommate was positively glowing, wings fluttering with the excitement of new gossip- Starscream having ditched drill instruction! The class had ended without incident, sure, but..
Of course the whole academy was buzzing with the news of it.
You were trying, however, to forget the prickling in your plates, the way your processor buzzed at the casual expression on Starscream's face, the playful spike you had felt in his EM field, even from a distance.
Had you ever seen him like that before? Had you ever seen his wings so relaxed, his expression so... carefree? Had you ever seen him play like that, boosting himself along the ground, plates shivering with excitement as he leapt to grab another? You couldn't really hear what your roommate was saying over your own buzzing processor, and they try to catch your attention again.
"Hey! Hey- do you have any ideas what they were up to?"
They waggle their browplates, clearly hoping for anything particularly juicy.
You roll your helm to the side, humming thoughtfully.
You could share, but…
…maybe you wanted to keep this for yourself.
"I dunno," you return, shrugging on your berth. "I didn't really see anything, but-
Featuring: Original Character Echo and mentions of trining instincts, 800+ words
Really, it had started out as any regular report- meeting with the Decepticon Second-in-Command had become a regular event on turning in data-pads on scouted energon hotspots and other areas of interest, and Echo was at least glad for the work to keep his processor occupied.
But today had been... well, interesting.
Starscream hardly seemed to look over the datapad Echo had handed over, red optics instead trailing over the other Seeker's wings appraisingly. And there had been such a thrill to that, Echo flaring his wings out, his EM field buzzing with returned interest. Why not show off a little? He hadn’t felt this looked at since his trine-
Starscream had always been a hotly spoken of flier back on Vos- Echo had completed his flight training vorns before the war, but he could still remember the excitement back home when the highly-regarded flier had taken his place amongst the instructors in the academy.
He hadn't seemed thrilled about it at the time. But when the war started, there was always that little final student of his- you, his 'Cadet', hovering around him like you were bound by energy fields. It had been almost annoying to see, like some kind of pet the wing-commander had taken to dragging around with him, or maybe the last vestigial reminder of the glory of those spires they all once flew around.
Until you came back with those wings. It was murmured about, where those wings came from, somebody lower in the ranks but so vicious that nobody truly questioned when he disappeared-
Not even his Amica, so much more silent than he had been before the war, before the freedom that active combat gave to them for bloodshed and violence.
Not even his trine-mates- Echo remembering with some relief when their third had gently parted from him, unable and unwilling to hold their bond after the disappearance of the bloodthirsty one they had tried to placate for all those centuries. After this long, Echo was nearly forgetting his face-
But he'd never forget those wings, broad and powerful and, in old, pre-war memory banks? Safe. Safe to press into, to gently touch, to trail claw-tips over in preening or in those gentle moments that their friendship had shifted into the ease of something more intimate.
It would be easier to distract himself with a dalliance with another flier- and at the very least, Starscream seemed interested. Wings flicking, EM field more than a little hot brushing against Echo's.
It was nice. He let his optics lower, lift, his wings twitching in their own appraisal, the sharp rolling of the SIC’s wings, the crooked smile, that rasping voice that had started to hold some soft whistles of flirtatious Vosian in the undertones- he could almost forget that Starscream had murdered his trine leader. Ripped off his wings.
Could almost forget the cool, guilty feeling of relief in his spark when he felt the connection finally cut.
“Everything seems to be in order,” Starscream purred, handing his data-pad back. “No errors. Good work~”
Praise.
Rare in the Decepticon cause, rarer still from the high-command. He hated how it made his wings twitch over his spine, wished, for a moment, to see those darker wings-
And maybe, for a moment, he could let himself forget-
There.
Another brushing of energy, loud, and Echo almost felt like he had been snapped at.
Distracted, over Starscream's shoulder, he felt that aggression, that claim, resounding from the hall, through the doorway that Starscream had so casually leaned against. Both of their wings twitched with it, the SIC looking over his shoulder in surprise-
You.
The Cadet.
That blue was a rarer colour post-peace, something one might see on an Autobot or a Neutral- those optics not quite so red as others. Your frame was smaller than the average Seeker's, which only made those dark wings stand out even more-
And there in the shadowed hall, Echo could see the way those wings flared, wider, wider, the unique silhouette a strange parody of his former trine-mate.
Trine-leader.
He felt his fans stall. He saw those optics vaguely hold him and Starscream in their field of view, as if they could burn heat right through Echo's own wings, and there was something about that, the truth, the edge to that sharpness, that felt-
Felt ever so-
Familiar.
The days back on Vos, before the war, before the malice, before the slaking of bloodthirst and the knowledge of how energon could glow on derma-
Black denta set into a wide, mischievous smile. Wings spread as if he could hold his trine together, the world together-
Echo remembered his trine-mate and saw new eyes beating into him, stating their claim in a way he hadn't felt stated since the war began.
"Cadet!"
Both you and Echo snapped out of it with Starscream's shout, and Echo shook himself, wings trembling from the flaring of EM fields, the buzz still reaching into his chassis.
"...nevermind," he muttered, turning on his pede and stepping away, steady as his shaking frame could allow.
Picking at his teeth or putting tools between his teeth for sure- if we're talking about more basic regular bad habits. Leaving things to the last minute to tidy or clean- his tattoo studio may be spotless, but his back office is a challenge to move through. I'm not sure per se about what else I'd call a bad habit tbh- the things he regularly does rarely bring actual harm, and I'm a big believer in letting your characters indulge.
Echo
44: Your OC's favourite memory?
Before the current war and Decepticon/Autobot faction split? There's a scene I picture, of where he was working at a materials factory as a steward/inventory clerk, and he was genuinely so satisfied with it. Once, his trine visited while he was at work- and it was genuinely such a moment of validation for him that it was easy to forget bad things. After the difficulties in their relationship started to rise up, this would become a more bittersweet memory, but still quite precious.
If we're getting to where I grabbed him from, Cadet Au for @radioactiverats? Then it's the first time he saw Cadet in the hall-
It was a misappropriated claiming energy, but he latched onto it all the same, and it glows in his memory as something to be treasured.
