You didn’t know if this was unconditional love or not. How you wish you could reach across the table and pluck one fresh strawberry from Sejun’s bowl yet you kept on spooning the plain yoghurt and chunks of kiwi into your mouth. You disliked kiwi and you regretted saying, “They’re alright,” to his question of, “Do you like kiwi?” You didn’t want to deflate his excitement when he bounded to you last night with shining galaxies in his eyes and a bright smile.
Here came your downfall. Sejun kept on buying kiwis as the week progressed and you kept on eating them. You forgot the days you didn’t eat kiwis as a part of breakfast, snacks and dessert after dinner. At least you knew you preferred the golden variation instead of the classic green kind. None the less you still disliked them. Something about its texture threw you off but the balance of sweetness and tartness accompanying it you enjoyed. Much like love you supposed.
The thoughts of telling Sejun you didn’t enjoy the fruit disappeared the more you ate them. It grew on you. And Sejun... Sejun watched you as if he was a hawk. Two weeks in of kiwis being incorporated into your diet. Just like yesterday and the day before that, you were cutting a kiwi in half and scraped them out with a spoon before slicing them into thinner pieces. A dessert routine at this point. Sejun stepped beside you and washed the utensils you used, “Either Byungchan lied to me, you really like kiwis or you’re eating them for the sake of not hurting my feelings.”
“What does Byungchan have to do with this?” The cake fork stopped halfway to your mouth and the slice of kiwi fell back into the small bowl.
“He told me you hated kiwis three days ago. Since then I’ve purposely been buying them to see if you actually hate it. You just eat it all without complaint for two weeks! You should have told me. I don’t-“ You cut Sejun off by shoving a piece of the tart fruit into his mouth. He squawked out a surprised noise but swallowed the soft meat regardless. Sweet Lim Sejun, it truly had bothered him.
When Sejun parted his lips to continue his worry rambles, you fed him another piece and another until the bowl was empty. “Byungchan didn’t lie,” his brows furrowed at your confession, “but what he didn’t know is that I like them now.” You shrugged, kiwis weren't bad, you just had to get used to its texture. Like how you adapted to Sejun’s love language. One more fruit for you to like. One more thing to love Sejun for.
He patted his hands against his pants, patches of the light blue denim darkened, and turned to face you, “Are you sure?”
You grabbed pulled him closer by the collar of his shirt. “More than.” You could taste the sweetness of the kiwi on Sejun’s lips. His eyes fluttered shut and his hands found purchase on your hips, pulling you into his hold. Kiwis weren’t bad at all.
“How about pomegranate next time?” Sejun whispered, a tad breathless and nose hairbreadth away from yours. His eyes crinkle into crescent moons and the dimple on his cheek deepened. You closed the distance, a trembling sigh caressed your skin, the fire kindling brighter. You never had the intention of leaving him.
