For far far far too long I 'played it small' - 'I was basically a 'shrinking violet'. I know many of you are as well. Social Media, & Pressure On Young Women

I often look at the pictures of young the girls that my son associates with on social media, and as a woman first, see exactly why they are trying to project a certain image. The most common theme is low self esteem, and the desperate need to have someone think they’re beautiful and like them, and want them. It’s so sad that we still have this unspoken societal image of what beauty is. Children are exposed to adult life far too early, especially to the idea that sex sells. I hate to bring this up, but look at Miley and her absolute focus on ridding herself of her squeaky clean disney persona. These girls have the thought ingrained that sexy = attractiveness. That is fundamentally wrong. We need to let girls know that brains, ambition, and self love all complement a beautiful face/ body, they don’t compete. They are not mutually exclusive. I truly wish I could shake each and every one of them and tell them that they are fantastic, without having to pose in a bikini on instagram. 50 people liking a filtered, posed, and contrived photograph does not define your personal value!!! How many girls do this, get the reaction, and then cry themselves to sleep at night?

As a mother of a son, I have tried to instill a strong respect for women. He has grown up with many resilient and successful women in his life, and I hope I have been succesful in that. I can only trust that he will always be respectful and patient and kind with any girls he dates.
