“If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.”
— Audre Lorde
Whether we’re eating or working or meditating or listening or talking, the reason that we’re here in this world at all is to study ourselves. In fact, it has been said that studying ourselves provides all the books we need.
-Pema Chödrön

I used to think that pot was a fun way to pass the time, and escape myself for awhile. I don’t really feel the need to do it anymore. I can’t write well on it, and things get pretty jumbled, and believe me, that’s the last thing I need to to experience with my active imagination.
When I felt the need to escape my 3D reality I used pot to do it. I’m allergic to alcohol, so that wasn’t a feasible choice. I finally figured out what was missing from my life. It wasn’t anything on the outside of me. It was the love I was neglecting to give myself, on the inside; with my thoughts, with how I felt about myself and my current circumstances. it was the way I was perceiving everything. And that was nothing that pot, or anything outside of myself, could heal.
Salvador Dali is one of my favorite surrealist artists and surrealist people of all time. I mean, the man was truly out there, by choice. He had a great quote that you may be familiar with. Here it is:
“I don’t do drugs, I am drugs...I am the drug, take me!” -Salvador Dali
I think he’s right. We are, essentially the drug. The only drug, that can heal ourselves. We can heal ourselves with biofeedback, and in the metaphysical sense, by choosing to ingest a more positive outlook about ourselves. We can engage in kinder “self talk”, and be generally overall easier on ourselves from the inside out. We can erase the label, and the concept of being an “addict” (former or current) and look at ourselves as a human in the process of choosing a better path for ourselves.
Drugs , to me, did not do the trick because the trick, isn’t one. There is no trick, no secret formula, no magic potion, no nothing you can buy, acquire, be gifted or anything anyone can give, or purposefully withhold from you. You are in total control of the amount of love you get, and give to you. You do this by caring about how you feel, in every minute of every day. That is the way to health and healing. No drugs except for yourself, required. 💕
Pride spreads through absent minded dreads of past decisions an ocean of lost completion
Why are there rainbow walls messaged within the vast unknown of life
The milk of the whites of our innocent eyes
Blinded by indecision
Warped by blinks inked upon porous papyrus thick with fibrous links to a past unknown to the common soul
Who walks so boldly upon lie told
Pride is the viperous death of the human soul
I felt the need to have my poetry be an act of self-definition, to excavate this silent voice for myself.
Cathy Linh Che, interviewed by Kaveh Akbar for Divedapper
My friends, there will always be someone seeking to use one part of your selves. And I warn you, this is death. Death to you as a woman, death to you as a poet, death to you as a human being.
Lorde, “Self-Definition and My Poetry,”
