No one talks about how fucking frustrating naming yourself is. Within the past year I’ve gone through the names Jaydon, Newton, Richie, Adam, Jesse, Will, Ashton, Elliot and I fucking hate all of them. I don’t want to be called my dead name but god I wish I could just be named something and that’s the end of it.

Marlo Stanfield was clearly preoccupied with myth-building around himself. Specifically, that the fear around his name was the end in and of itself (and dealing with potential damage done when it was smeared), but I don't think it can be overstated what names and self-naming mean to the Black diaspora.

That's really all I think about when I hear, "My name is my name."
