About the use of ‘woke’ in fandom:
Being woke requires knowledge of the black consciousness movement and or (police/state) violence against black people. I.e: to be aware that black folks are being oppressed and that this oppression is unnatural.
I understand the conservative media has ridiculed ‘wokeness’ to encompass all progressive or marginalized issues.
But progressieve people now use ‘woke’ to joke about extremes in fandom spaces, without knowing that this has implications for the continued mocking of ‘woke’ as a concept which started as a way for us black people to communicate with each other about our unnatural oppression.
I want to propose if you’re not trying to ridicule black consciousness, try not going along with the bastardizing of ‘woke’. There’s more specific language you can use that doesn’t have it’s roots in conservatives mocking black consciousness.
