warnings:
The marvels spoilers (minor), kinda fluffy? kinda angsty?
summary:
Brunnhilde caught feelings, and she’s pretty sure the feelings are reciprocated; but neither one of them did anything about it, which means she had no reason to feel jealous or angry that Carol is marrying a Prince next month.

ValCarol has been ON MY MIND, but this is not my usual writing style or content or ship, so let me know what yall think please 🥺

It was worse because she didn’t hear it from her.
A Marvelous engagement, Prince Yan finally chose his princess!
The fact that she received the news from the gossip column in New Asgard’s daily news blast through her emails…
The asgardian blood in her wants to stab something.
It wasn't rational anger.
Of course it wasn’t.
They weren’t a thing.
The Valkyrie was intrigued when she first met the captain. In the battlefield, fighting Thanos and his obsession with some stupid stones. She came in guns blazing (literally) and blasted through his ship like it was nothing.
Brunnhilde was only asgardian. Who was she, to resist such attraction towards a beauty like her.
So they talked post-battle. Carol stayed for a bit for the funerals and the first phase of the rebuilding.
They had some drinks together.
Did some other stuff after the drinking.
Really good stuff if her memory serves her right.
And they’ve been keeping contact ever since. It’s been about two years since the battle. Carol will come back to earth for a few days in between planet hopping and refuge seeking, and stay with Brunnhilde for a day or two while they…have some fun together.
Carol has needs.
Brunnhilde has needs.
They were both adults.
And it was rare for them to find someone so compatible. Carol needed someone that won’t crush under her strength when she’s out of control, and Brunnhilde needed someone that can handle her needs to let off some steam without running away.
They work.
And it pains her to say, but Brunnhilde has been catching feelings.
It’s been years since she caught feelings for someone but damn the norns, Carol ticks all of her boxes.
She was funny, strong, capable, and got along really well with Warsong.
The first time Carol met Warsong officially, Brunnhilde wanted to laugh at how much she was swooning. The big bad Captain Marvel that can punch through a planet, was speaking so softly and gently towards her just as deadly pegasus.
“Look at you, you’re so majestic!” The whisper yelling made Brunnhilde laugh, but the moment Warsong actually reacted and gave Carol a little nudge into her hands, Brunnhilde wanted to get on her knees and marry this woman.
Warsong has always been a good judge of character, her protective instincts constantly deterring potential harm towards Brunnhilde. It was the main reason why she was so spoiled by Brunnhilde; she rewards loyalty, and Warsong is the most loyal of them all.
Point is, Brunnhilde caught feelings, and she’s pretty sure the feelings are reciprocated; but neither one of them did anything about it, which means she had no reason to feel jealous or angry that Carol is marrying a Prince next month.
She had no right to.
Which is foolish, cause she’s a King and she should have a right to…
Okay fine, she had no right to.
Ugh, this is frustrating.
“I’m going out for a walk.”
That was code for your King needs to punch something, she’ll be back in two hours after she’s satisfied.
---
She was slicing through the dummies with the speed and grace that only a Valkyrie can perform, when she landed softly behind her, “Hey Val.”
Brunnhilde pulls out the sword before spinning around, throwing her sword up before catching it and dragging it near Carol’s throat.
Carol’s hand glowed with her powers as she held Brunnhilde’s hand to stop the sword from coming any closer, “Woah! Someone’s in a mood.”
Upon seeing the blonde haired gorgeous woman who has been plaguing her mind for the past two hours, Val’s eyes softened and she pulled back the sword, “Marvs, you didn’t tell me you were coming today.”
Carol shrugs her usual nonchalance, “I wanted to give you a surprise, it’s been months since I last saw you.”
“Mhmm,” Brunnhilde just hums.
Okay so maybe getting her hopes up thinking that Carol came back to tell her about the marriage was too high of an expectation.
She doesn’t owe you anything, a little voice in her head reminded her.
Taking her silence as odd behavior, Carol tilted her head and furrowed her brows, “You okay?”
No, actually, I thought we had something but turns out I was being delusional and the girl in my dreams is actually getting married next month and I found out the news through a stupid news report so that kinda sucked.
Was what she wanted to say.
But she settled with a soft, “Just heard some bad news this morning.”
At that, Carol grew even more concerned, “Is everything alright?”
And she still cares.
You see, and this right here, this is why I love you- woah wait a minute Val.
New revelation alert, Brunnhilde had to stop herself from panicking.
She turned her head and walked towards where she left her water, “Nothing to fuss about. I heard congratulations are in order for you!”
Okay maybe that sounded a little bit too bitter, but Brunnhilde is having a hard time controlling herself. Big new revelation can do that to people okay?
“Huh?”
Opening the canteen and tilting her head to the side, “The marriage? I’ve met Prince Yan on several occasions, he’s nice, good score there. Eccentric planet, but I’m sure you can fit in just fine.”
Carol watched as Brunnhilde drank from the canteen, her eyes following her throat and catching on how her sweat was dripping down, she gulped and managed to get two words out, “Oh, that.”
Brunnhilde felt her gaze, of course she did.
And it restroke the fire in her.
The anger.
She really thought they had something.
She drops the canteen back onto the ground and takes hold of her sword once again.
The shift in Brunnhilde did not go unnoticed by Carol, “Val.”
“Hmm?”
“Are you angry at me?” asked Carol.
It was obvious.
The way her eyes are refusing to even look at Carol. The way her body is turned away from her. The way her lips are pursed a certain way and the way her jaw is clenched.
“No. Of course not, why would you think that?”
“Because you’re gripping your sword like you want to stab me with it,” She said as she covered Brunnhilde’s hand holding the sword with hers.
Brunnhilde looks up at Carol, finding eyes that she would love to swim in. Eyes filled with confusion and hesitance.
Once again, Val’s eyes softened and she took a deep breath before muttering a soft, “I would never.”
“I know.”
Carol did actually come back because she wanted to tell Val about the marriage. It was a ridiculous proposal from Prince Yan but old politics and traditions needed to be respected because his mother might have his head if he did not, and Carol wanted to help a friend out.
It was purely a marriage of convenience especially because Carol knew who she wanted to spend her life with.
It took some time before she admitted her feelings towards Brunnhilde.
Maria’s death affected Carol in ways she never could imagine. She spent days flying around space just trying to run herself dry. She hated the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness, of how she is one of the most powerful beings in the universe yet couldn’t do anything to help her out.
She wanted to swore off love, knowing that the life she’s leading will not have time or space for love.
But then she met Brunnhilde.
Riding a pegasus no less.
Which was, so cool.
Learning that she was asgardian made Carol more open to talking with her, since it’s hard to find a human with shared experiences. She did not want to go on a first date and explain what it feels flying through space all the time.
Trust her, it gets tiring after two tries.
There’s of course also the concern of a human’s…mortality.
Asgardians are nice.
Strong, rich with knowledge, their body and general strength not unlike Carol’s.
It almost felt like a perfect match really.
The time they spent together in the past proved her right. Brunnhilde was funny, snarky, and extremely sexy. The way she commands the room and how she takes up her space, makes Carol feel a certain way. She’s also very good at making Carol feel comfortable and safe.
Val was the only one that managed to create a space for Carol that allowed her to open up about Maria. It took a lot of time, and a lot of nudging and gentle words before Carol caved in and spilled how she’s been coping and what Maria meant to her.
They were sitting on the mountain behind New Asgard, it was way too cold for anyone’s liking but Val made Carol feel warm and comfortable enough to talk about Maria for hours.
They spent the night in Brunnhilde’s quarters, for once making gentle love towards one another; Val whispered sweet words and praises that made Carol whimper for more, while Carol showed a side of her that no one has seen in decades.
And then there’s Val’s healthy obsession with suits.
Good God someone save Carol from feeling like a hopeless lesbian everytime she sees Val in her suits.
So sue her, for falling for a gorgeous, strong, funny viking god.
There’s been a push and pull tension going on between them, but neither one of them was ready to do anything about it. Brunnhilde, stuck in her fear that a repeat of history might happen; Carol, stuck with a fear of moving on and forgetting her past.
But it was obvious they both liked each other.
They aren’t that hopeless.
They’re just a little scared.
Carol was snapped out of her thoughts from Brunnhilde’s movements, moving away from her and sheathing her sword.
Okay maybe that trip down memory lane took way too long.
Brunnhilde was feeling uncomfortable with their locked gaze, not knowing what to say when Carol just showed her a level of trust that is oh so rare these days.
She never wants Carol to feel like she would resort to violence for something like this. Even if she is angry. Even if she wants to stab something.
She had no right to be this angry.
“It’s a marriage of convenience.”
“What?”
Carol leans against one of the dummies and pockets her hands in her pants, “He needs to respect their traditions and marry a woman to inherit the throne. His mother is asking for someone respectable, and apparently I fit all those criterias.”
Brunnhilde can barely keep up with the new load of information.
“So, he’s not in love with you?”
Carol actually laughed out at that, “God no, he has a lovely partner actually, they’re inseparable.”
Brunnhilde blinked once, then twice, “And you don’t like him, at all?”
For the first time, Carol is seeing the side of Brunnhilde that no one else had a chance to. The side that is filled with hurt and fear and anxieties and insecurities. The side that Brunnhilde tries to keep hidden from everyone, even since she lost her sisters, and her lover.
Carol’s voice was soft when she confessed directly, “No. I have someone else in mind.”
“Oh,” came a disappointed voice from the Valkyrie.
“I don’t want to be a princess, if anything, I want to be a queen,” clarified Carol.
Her eyes caught Brunnhilde’s, while the corner of her lips were tugged upwards slightly.
“Oh.”
Brunnhilde couldn’t help herself but smile as well.
She felt a little silly for this whole thing.
So they did have something, after all.
Carol walks over and gently pulls Brunnhilde closer to her, “Are you still jealous?”
“I wasn’t jealous,” denied the Valkyrie.
Carol smirks, “Really? Because you look really hot when you’re jealous.”
She leans forward and captures the asgardian’s lips.
It was welcomed, it always was.
Brunnhilde links her hands behind Carol, closing the space between them.
Her hands travel down Carol’s spine, resting just above her ass, “Do I, now?”
“Mhmm…” Carol hums, finally opening her eyes to look at the woman in front of her.
It took them a long time to get here, but they finally were.
Carol didn’t expect this when she made her decision to visit earth this time. She just knew for a fact that she needed to tell Val about the marriage. She didn’t expect the reaction from Brunnhilde, and it solidified her feelings towards the woman.
The thought of losing her was too painful.
And the pain she saw from her eyes was even worse.
She pulls apart Brunnhilde’s linked arms, and takes hold of her right hand. With a little smile, she places a gentle kiss on the back of her hand.
The tension was thick, Brunnhilde barely knew what to do at that moment. The way the gorgeous woman was looking at her right now is mesmerizing, she can’t help but whisper, “What are you doing, Marvs?”
Carol’s free hand went to rest at the back of Brunnhilde’s neck, stroking it gently like how she knew the woman likes it, “I’m sorry for not telling you about the marriage, it was a sudden proposal by Yan and I accepted because I know how important this is for him.”
Catching the King of Asgard’s gaze once again, “Just know that even if I may be officially married to him, even though I may be the princess of Aladna, I will forever be your Queen, and you, my King.”
Taken completely off guard, Brunnhilde whispered once again, “Are you proposing to me?”
“I’m swearing myself to you, if you’ll have me,” came the easy answer.
