The Estraven Homosexual Literature Society - named in honor of a Left Hand of Darkness character, from our mutual fave Ursula K. Le Guin - is an LGBTQ+ adult fantasy writing collective consisting of authors B. Pigeon (@b-a-pigeon) and Fell Marsh (that’s me!). B. Pigeon is the author of Mirrored in Evergreen and Worm in a Jar; Fell Marsh’s first novel, Both Sides of the Moon, is coming out next week!

Here is the first installment of our short story series Ready & Able.

Chapter One — Setting the Frame

Mood: Rain-soaked. Tense. Suspicious. Everyone’s hiding something.

Chapter Synopsis:

When a powerful developer is executed in a luxury high-rise, the scene looks clean — too clean. Detective Ricky Ready is first on-site, but one phone number in the victim’s call log turns the case personal fast. Meanwhile, journalist Eren Able catches a leak that shouldn’t exist: a photo placing Ricky at the crime scene before the official timeline. In a city where police reports get polished and truth gets buried, two people from opposite sides of the law are about to be pulled into the same frame — and someone is already setting them up to take the fall.

Short Passage:

The front door showed no sign of forced entry. Two wine glasses sat barely touched. Across the room, our victim was failing the room-temperature challenge on the dining floor, two rounds buried in the back of his skull.

I checked his phone. Wanted to know who got the last word before Jeffery Adams took his one-way trip.

Missed calls from his wife. An outgoing call to Bishop.

Then an incoming call from an unsaved number.

My stomach dropped.

I pulled out my phone and compared the number.

Helene Harlotte.

The love of my life.

…What the hell are you doing in my victim’s call log?

The Plan

I’m building a slate of serialized short stories — each one designed with a future comic adaptation in mind.

My hopes are to assemble a creative team so these stories can become comic adaptations.
