They don't speak much, but when they do, they bark orders to not lose time to the severity of the situation. Tonight, caretaker has to get back into their "work mode".
The situation is urgent, whumpee got injured badly during the fight, only a sheer amount of luck helped both whumpee and the team mate to get here without any incidents, but caretaker knows that their hiding place could be discovered any time.
"I need you to hold this over whumpee's mouth," they say and look at team mate who looks at the piece of cloth with widened eyes. Caretaker hates their next words, but they can't lose any more time. "I know this sucks. But we can't let them discover us. And I need to work quickly. Now do as I told you."
The other nods and moves quickly enough before caretaker starts working on resetting the broken bone.
Caretaker hates being in their "work mode".
Because no matter how much they try to ignore them, the muffled screams ring in their ears. Those screams will haunt them at night, in their dreams. The despair, the pain. Even the cloth, the hand can't stop both to hit caretaker with full force.
Whumpee's muffled screams and choked sobs ring in caretaker's ears as they try to remind themself that these sounds are proof that the other is still alive.
Crying out in agony, Caretaker A’s vision swam as they struggled to get up. They couldn’t stop they had to-
“Stop Caretaker A!”
Butt slamming to the ground once again, Caretaker A blinked up at the mass of color that was abruptly at their side.
“Wha-? No... gotta...go...can’t...stop...”
Gentle hands pressed down on their chest when they began to get up again.
“Oh you think you’re back there... Caretaker A? A! Look at me! Focus... you’re really out of it right now so you have to try.”
Eyes resting on the blob of color who’s voice was vaguely familiar, Caretaker A nearly began to push themselves up again before their vision finally came into focus with a snap.
“Caretaker B? But how-”
Cupping Caretaker A’s cheek, Caretaker B put a finger to A’s lips.
“Shh, you thought you were getting away from them again. We’re on a hike and you fell... I know you can feel that pain, and you don’t seem to realize it’s coming from your leg.”
Brow furrowing, Caretaker A’s mouth opened to deny B’s claim only to instead fall open at the unmistakable sight.
Their leg was broken alright. Any pretense of a continuous leg was gone from the jagged stair-step appearance it held now.
As Caretaker A watched in utter rapture, the sensation of shock overrode the immense pain and replaced it with pure fascination.
That was until Caretaker B spoke words that passed Caretaker A by and all at once B had a death grip on their leg and pushed.
In an instant, Caretaker A’s leg was nearly straight again. But past the unimaginable pain shooting through it, A couldn’t offer a thought to care as their screams echoed both through the forest and their own mind.
Then all at once a wave of black slammed into them and they screamed and thought no more.
Hello! I’m a huge fan of you fics!! If you’re up for it, I would love to read some Obi-Wan whump with Quinlan! Some ideas are obi-wan getting injured on a mission together or them getting kidnapped bc those are always fun <3
Setting a Broken Bone
(warning for violence, injury)
Quinlan drags himself across the floor of the cell. His body is weak and numb from the electricity Bane had shot through his body. Had it just been Bane, they would have been fine, but the bounty hunter hadn’t come alone. Apparently, the bounty on Obi-wan’s head had attracted more interest than intelligence had suggested. Once Bane had realized both him and Obi-wan were chasing Ziro, the bounty hunter had gathered some backup. And that brought them here.
Quinlan heaves himself up so that he can lean against the wall. His legs are totally useless, but the numbness should pass eventually. It’s an unfortunate quirk of Kiffar biology in response to electricity.
“Obi-wan?” Quinlan says. He nudges his friend, who’s still sprawled out on the ground. Obi-wan had been subjected to a severe beating from one of the Mandalorian bounty hunters that had been with Bane. “You okay?”
Obi-wan groans in response.
“You shouldn’t be on your back.”
Obi-wan groans louder and tries to swat Quinlan’s hand away from where he’s poking him in the shoulder.
“Come on, Obi,” Quinlan says.
Obi-wan shifts slightly but doesn’t make it off his back. He’s bruised and bloodied and one of his legs is broken. Apparently, Obi-wan’s past involvement in Mandalore had stirred up some resentment.
Quinlan shifts over towards Obi-wan. He doesn’t want Obi-wan to choke on the blood from his broken nose, so he helps Obi-wan sit up. Obi-wan growls in protest but submits to Quinlan’s help.
“Relax. It’s a clean break. It won’t mess up your pretty face,” Quinlan says.
“How fried are you?” Obi-wan gets out.
“Bane knew what he was doing, so we’re not going anywhere. Think you can move over here? I can set the break.” Obi-wan groans again. “Come on,” Quinlan says. “You don’t complain this much when Skywalker’s around.”
“Only for you, Quin.”
Quinlan huffs a laugh, then shifts around so he can reach Obi-wan’s leg. “This is going to hurt like hell.”
“Get it over with.”
Quinlan closes his eyes and uses the Force to ease the swelling and pain. Obi-wan forces his breathing to slow and even out. It’s not the first time they’ve patched each other up. It’s not even the first time they shared a cell, though it’s been almost a decade. After Obi-wan had been knighted, they hadn’t seen much of each other. They’d both been busy with their padawans. Quinlan had hoped this mission would be an opportunity to reconnect.
Looks like they’ll have plenty of time for that.
Quinlan yanks on Obi-wan’s leg and the bone falls back into place. Obi-wan shrieks and spasms, then falls still. “You okay?”
“Fine,” Obi-wan grits out.
Quinlan rolls his eyes. There’s no reason for Obi-wan to lie to him, but he knows pretending he’s not in pain is part of Obi-wan’s instinctual need to protect him. He had once thought it was cute, but now it verges on annoying. Quinlan needs to know what’s going on with Obi-wan if they’re going to get out of here.
“Bane’s going to sell us to the Seppies if we don’t make a plan,” Quinlan says.
“Why don’t you come up with the escape plan this time?” Obi-wan says.
“Because you’re better at it. You’re the one who gets captured all the time.”
“I do not.” Obi-wan’s jaw clenches and he breathes sharply. His hand balls into a fist. Quinlan takes Obi-wan’s hand. Obi-wan needs to relax or the pain will only get worse. He rubs small circles on the back of Obi-wan’s hand as his fist slowly uncurls.
“Rumor has it you flirted your way out of your last cell,” Quinlan says, trying to distract Obi-wan again. He has no doubt the pain is nearly overwhelming.
“Don’t be absurd,” Obi-wan says.
“Then how’d you get out?”
“I hacked the door panel.”
“With that trick I taught you?”
Obi-wan hums neutrally but doesn’t deny it. Quinlan smiles. It was a skill taught to Shadows, but Obi-wan had needed it far more than Quinlan ever did. Quinlan knew how to blend in. Obi-wan was nearly incapable of it, so he played the role of diversion or distraction, which would often end in him being captured. Quinlan used to make fun of him for it, but it was effective, especially when Obi-wan and Skywalker worked together. Quinlan wished he and Obi-wan could work together like they did.
Obi-wan sucks in another sharp breath. A few stray tears slip down his face.
“Hang in there, Obi,” Quinlan says. He pats Obi-wan’s hand. “I’ll figure something out.”
“This doesn’t look good,” The caretaker mumbles to themselves, knowing that it was the understatement of the year, the whumpee’s leg is badly broken, the skin is hot and swollen over the break, and they are trapped about twenty miles away from camp, unable to call for help--and it’ll be dark again before long.
“No shit,” Whumpee groaned, wincing as they shifted slightly, “If I ever try to talk you into anything ever again just knock me over the head,” they grumble.
“I don’t recommend getting knocked over the head,” caretaker joked, their hand going to the gash near their temple, there was dried blood in the hair and on their face still, in the places they hadn’t sweat it off, they gave a forced chuckle but the smile didn’t reach their eyes, they couldn’t shake the feeling of eyes on them.
Whumpee felt like they were being watched too, a strange on-alert that tickled the hair on the back of their neck, they kept glancing into the thick underbrush, which was hard to make anything out now, but would get even worse as the sun went down, casting long shadows that made every tree and bush look like something violent and menacing, they shuddered, wincing as the movement jostled their leg.
Nothing good happens in the dark out here, the whumpee and the caretaker learned that all too well the night before. They’d barely survived the sudden onslaught of attacks, whumpee had gotten the worst of it, but caretaker was also bruised and sore, rocks, some of them very large, had just started launching at them from the woods, they still didn’t know what they were up against, they might never know....This trip was supposed to be a fun weekend in the woods to unplug and unwind, it had been the last chance before it got cold again, now they both thought that they might never go camping again--whether they survived this trip or not.
“What are you going to do?” The whumpee asks, poorly hidden fear shining in their eyes.
Caretaker grunted, jerked from their thoughts, “What do you mean?”
“You should go--leave me here with some rocks or something, I’ll fight them off as long as I can--maybe you’ll get back in time,” Whumpee’s voice trembles a little at the end, they can’t imagine anything worse than being left here alone and unable to get away as the dark sets up around them like something impenetrable, not to mention being left with whatever those things were, they swallowed hard.
“Absolutely not, I’m not leaving you--don’t say stupid shit like that ever again,” Caretaker said angrily, sitting down next to where whumpee was leaning against a downed tree and crossing their arms, “It’s a waste of time.”
“Well what do we do then?” Whumpee couldn’t help but feel a little relieved.
The caretaker sighed, and whumpee thought he wasn’t going to like their plan, “I’m going to set your leg and splint it, then I’ll help you walk out of here.”
Whumpee nodded slowly, “Okay,” they tried to make their voice sound nonchalant, it was the best shot they had after all, but the blood had rushed out of their face, the pain in their leg was barely manageable as it was, setting it would be agony.
“Ready?” Caretaker asked gruffly, crouching down in front of the whumpee, whumpee was beginning to panic, everything in them was screaming for this not to happen, they hadn’t imagined that the caretaker would want to start so quickly, they watched the caretaker with widening eyes as they gently felt their leg, looking for the best way to put it back where it should be.
“D-do you know what you’re doing?”
Caretaker swallowed, “I mean I have the training, I’ve just never done it on a real person before.”
“Great,” the whumpee nodded, their heart already beating quick and fast against their rib cage, “Super.”
“It’ll be fine,” the caretaker said with conviction, “look at me,” when the whumpee did, they met their eyes, “I’m going to fix this for you, okay? And we are going to make it out of these woods before it gets too dark again, alright?”
The whumpee takes a shuddering breath, “Okay,” they cringe as caretaker’s hand brushes against them,”l-let’s do this.”
“Wait,” Caretaker said before he’d started applying any pressure, Whumpee let out a breath they didn’t know they’d been holding, it fogged in the rapidly cooling air.
Caretaker ripped off the sleeve of their flannel and looked up at the whumpee’s terrified face with pity in their eyes, “This is so you can stay a little more quiet--we don’t know if there is anything listening,” they wait until the whumpee leans forward, allowing them to tie to improvised gag around their head, looking back at them with terrified eyes.
“I’m sorry,” they say gently before they start, when they do their touch alone makes the pain swell to something almost indescribable, the whumpee bites down on the gag and squeezes their eyes shut, unable to hold back a groan that quickly turns into an agonized scream--and they can’t stop screaming--it’s worse than when they broke it. It feels like caretaker is grinding hot gravel around under their skin. They would have told the caretaker to stop if they’d been able to use words at all.
They throw themselves back against the tree, trying to get away from the caretaker’s cruel hands, their eyes roll wild and animal in their raw panic.
Then they stop screaming, eyes sinking closed as they melt bonelessly against the tree.
The caretaker finishes soon after, splinting their leg between two straight similarly sized branches. They tie the splints around their friend’s leg with hands that shake so badly that they drop the branches several times before they get it right.
Then they take the gag off, supporting whumpee’s head with a gentle hand on their cheek, they let out a tremulous sigh, they are never going to be able to forget the whumpee’s muffled screams, not even if they live to be a hundred.
They sit back beside their friend, drawing their knees up to their chest hoping that the whumpee comes to before the sun goes down.

TW: Broken bones (obviously)
Ornstein loved to jog. Or that was how he called it. Artorias often jokingly said, that he was the only person who would consider running at his full speed through Anor Londo and jumping from rafter to rafter a jog. He enjoyed the feeling of the speed, the wind which was blowing through his ponytail and the feeling of absolute control over himself when he jumped over the rafters. Granted, he didn't jump over the highest rafters, even he considered it too dangerous, but it was still a remarkable height. Ornstein didn't worry. He knew his jogging route by heart now and knew perfectly how to safely jump from rafter to rafter without any trouble at all. So when his foot slipped, he felt surprise, confusion and then the dreadful feeling of having messed up.
When Artorias saw Ornstein falling, a wave of dread washed over him. He had always feared that this would happening one day with the way, Ornstein would "jog" and so the wolf knight was running towards his friend despite knowing that he never would be fast enough to actually catch him. "Oh shit oh shit oh shit...", Artorias muttered under his breath when he arrived at the spot where Ornstein had fell. "Ornstein, where are you?", he shouted, not really believing he would receice answer, but feeling equally surprised and relieved when he heard the lion knight's voice. "Artorias...? Thank the lords that you are here... I think I need some help."
Alright, Ornstein was alive and conscious at last, but he must have been hurt really bad if he asked for help. Artorias rushed into the direction of Ornstein's voice and found the lion knight laying on the ground. He didn't look mortally wounded at least, but was very clearly unable to get up on his own.
"How did you manage to survive that?", Artorias blurted out.
"I trained a lot how to fall right, with fighting dragons and all.", Ornstein answered. "Would you help me up please? I think I have broken a leg."
"We probably should get rid of your armour first.", Artorias said and carefully helped his friend out of it. Luckily Ornstein would normally put on a few comfortable clothes under his armour, finding it too uncomfortable to wear all this metal on his bare skin. After his leggings were gone, which made Ornstein wince and hiss in pain, Artorias was able to view the damage a lot better.
"I think you may have broken both legs...", he said. Ornstein had gotten really pale after seeing the mess his legs had become and had put a hand over his mouth, implying that he felt sick. "I better get you the infirmary.", Artorias said.
A short while later the dragon slayer had been carried to the infirmary and was waiting for treatment, lying on a bed. His legs did hurt real bad and he felt stupid. He never had slipped whilde jogging before. He could consider himself lucky that he got out of it with a few breaks, it could have ended far worse. Artorias entered the room, smiling at him: "I have good news and bad news."
"Give me the good ones first, please.", Ornstein said.
"The princess has agreed to cast her new miracle on you, that will greatly shorten the healing process."
"And the bad news?"
"The bones still have to get set."
Ornstein sighed: "I had a feeling that would be the case. You better get me something to bite into then, that is going to hurt..."
Artorias was handing Ornstein a small piece of wood and soon after the physician entered the infirmary. "You are already informed?", she asked.
Ornstein nodded and Artorias sat down on a chair next to the bed. The physician took a look at Ornstein's leg. "We will have to get rid of these pants. Let me just cut them off, undressing will be unneccessary painful."
Ornstein felt a bit flustered about this, but he let it happen. It had hurt enough to get his leggings removed with the help of Artorias, he wasn't too fond of another unneccessary wave of pain. After his pants had been cut off, the physician was able to get a better look. Ornstein quickly looked away, without the cloth between it he could see how wrong the bend of his legs looked like and how bad they had started to bruise, which was making him feel sick again.
"Looks like in the left leg, the tibia and the fibula is broken and in the right leg the tibia is broken at two different places...", the physician said. "I will start setting them now. Are you ready?"
"Just a small moment please.", Ornstein said and took a few deep breathes to fight the nausea away. After he felt confident enough to take it, he took the piece of wood Artorias had given him and placed it between his teeth. He nodded to the physician so that she could start.
"Alright then, I will start with the left leg.", she said. Ornstein braced himself when he felt her touch. He hated this. Getting a broken bone set was such an awful pain. He tried to calm himself down, by thinking that it would just be a short awful moment and then it would be over. A short awful moment he had to endure for four times. Only thinking about it made his breath go faster again. He could feel Artorias taking his hand and turned his head to look at the wolf knight. "Don't worry, it will be over soon.", he said reassuredly.
"I am getting to the first one.", the phyisican proclaimed and shortly after Ornstein was hit with the pain and the cracking sound of a bone going back into its usual place. He winced, managed to notice that he had bit very hard into the piece of wood and tensed his whole body. Alright, three more to go.
"Tell me if you need a break.", the physican said. "I know this hurts real bad."
Ornstein was already sweating and panting heavily from the pain, but motioned her to go on. He wanted to be over with it.
"Now getting to the fibula.", the physician said. "That one isn't that bad." Ornstein braced himself for another wave of pain, but was relieved when it turned out to not be as bad as the first one.
The physician spent a moment to splint and bandage the set bones in the left leg before turning to the right one.
"You nearly are over with it. I think I may be able to set this bone in one going. It is broken twice, but I just need the broken piece to get aligned to the others.", she casually explained. Ornstein was sure that this would hurt a lot and tensed again. He could feel how Artorias laid a hand on his back, rubbing it.
"You are doing great.", he said.
"Ready?", the physician asked and put her attention on the right leg after Ornstein nodded. She spent a while determining where the broken piece was, making Ornstein hissing slightly in pain. After she had found it, she just slammed the bone into place, which made Ornstein howl in pain, a wave of fresh nausea flooding over him, making him fell down on the bed, just lying there shivering.
"That has been it. You were doing great.", the physician said while splinting and bandaging the right leg. "You can get the princess now."
"You were really doing great. That must have hurt a lot.", Artorias said next to Ornstein, still holding his hand. "How about we wait for a few minutes till you feel better and then I will go and get the princess so that we can fix you up?"
Ornstein spent the next few minutes concentrating on deep breathes, before he answered to Artorias: "That would be very appreciated." He noticed that he still was holding Artorias hand and let it go at once. "Um... and thank you very much for your support, Artorias..."
Artorias smiled at him: "Don't sweat it. I know you would do the same thing for me."
“I know it hurts, I’m so so sorry,” caretaker mutters under her breath as she moves whumpee into a better position, who is bleeding from several wounds. “Okay, I’ll just take a quick look and then I need to work on the worst before we can move you,” she continues and looks him up and down. The problem is … everything looks like the worst.
When another team member finally arrives she nods at them. “I need your help here. Sit down next to him and keep his arms still,” she insists, and team member helps holding down whumpee while she works on him. It’s a gruesome sight, really, but she has to work quickly to not have him bleed out on the field tonight.
“They will hear us,” team member says as whumpee tries himself to keep his sounds at bay, but a scream escaped his lips as caretaker moves his broken leg. They share a look and then both look at whumpee, who is shaking and sweaty, almost too out of it to realise what’s happening around him. Caretaker grits her teeth and breathes out shakily.
“Okay … just … cover his mouth. Not his nose, just his mouth, so his screams won’t be too loud,” she tells team member and then looks at whumpee. “I’m sorry, kid. This will hurt like hell.” The two nod at each other and team member covers whumpee’s mouth, muffling the screams caretaker causes by setting a nasty broken bone, while she apologises over and over again.
