Whumptober #31
Trope of the day: bleeding out + rescued by the enemy

Whumpee's lids are getting heavier and heavier, their body weaker. The ground underneath them is just as cold as their own skin, blood and rain soaking their clothes.
Staring into the clouded and rainy sky, Whumpee tries to take deep breaths, but they hurt too much.
Even Caretaker left them, even the person the trusted the most.
We can't help you ... I am so sorry.
These words still haunt them ... are these the last words anyone has ever spoken to them?
Whumpee believes that they are hallucinating when they hear steps coming closer, forcing themselves to keep their eyes open.
The face above them is familiar, but ... why does it unsettle them?
"My, my ... and I thought that your group were only righteous people. Don't move, I first need to check on your wounds," Enemy says, fumbling with Whumpee's clothes.
Whumpee opens their mouth to say something, but the other shushes them.
"Thank me when I have saved your life, kid. You're coming with me."
Whumpee wants to protest, but their tongue is too heavy.

Trope of the day: mirror

The person in front of them seems familiar, but like a stranger at the same time. It has been years since Whumpee has seen their own reflection.
They knew it would be ... different.
They knew that the time with Whumper would leave its marks.
But that they would not be able to fully recognise themself ... Whumpee takes a small step back, seeing a bit more of their torso and all the scars on it.
It will take a lot of time to gain more weight again, get to a healthy weight. They can see their ribs, their pelvic bones.
With shaky fingers, Whumpee traces the scars, looking in the mirror. What has Whumper done to their body?
Tears blur their vision, running down their cheeks only seconds later.
What if they will never be able to fully recognise themself again?

Trope of the day: broken dishes
_
The crashing sound from the kitchen makes Caretaker sit up on their chair. Their heart picks up a pace and they hurry out of their office and down the stairs.
"Is everything alright?", they ask, already entering the kitchen.
Whumpee is crouching on the floor, picking up the pieces of broken dishes, muttering something to themself through tiny sobs.
Caretaker realises that the other has not registered them, so they slowly walk up to Whumpee, crouching down in front of them. When their eyes meet, Whumpee widens theirs.
"I-I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to, it was just too hot and I-", they ramble, hurrying to pick up the last pieces and cutting their hand in the process.
Caretaker slowly reaches out and holds Whumpee's wrists, so they can't make things worse. They have learned to say the right words by now, so they look the other in the eyes and take a deep breath, waiting for Whumpee to do the same.
"Everything is okay, dishes can be bought new if they break. Sometimes, accidents happen, and that is toally normal and fine ... okay?"
Whumpee takes a moment to nod their head, finally relaxing their tense shoulders a little.
"Okay. Let's get that cut cleaned up, arite?"
Whumptober #28
Trope of the day: “I could always see straight through you.”

Their fake smile has been plastered on Whumpee's face for the entire day. The corners of their mouth feel like they weigh a tonne, wanting to drop.
But if they drop the smile, they drop the mask.
And they can't afford that.
So they keep themselves from flinching, from fleeing. What they cannot stop is the tight grip of their fingers, burying into their arms which are crossed before their chest.
Whumpee grits their teeth, watching the others, just wanting it to end. They have never been someone for such events.
When Caretaker puts their hand on their shoulder, Whumpee's mask cracks, the smile drops for a second. Their fingers hurt on their arm, the grip even tighter.
“You know ... I could always see straight through you, kid. Let's get home, shall we?”
When Whumpee takes a breath of fresh air, their mask crumbles and a sob escapes them. Caretaker takes their hand and leads them to the car.

Trope of the day: surgical scars
_
Whumpee traces the scars on their chest and stomach, trying to feel their own fingers on their skin. What once was quite sensitive skin now feels … dead. It is a weird sensation because Whumpee swears that they can feel something.
But at the same time, they feel nothing.
The scars are thick and some of them old, the newer ones even looking better than the older ones. Maybe because medical procedures have changed over the years, Whumpee doesn’t know.
They have been standing shirtless in front of the mirror for minutes, a quick glance turned into a full-on expedition. Whumpee knows that there are more surgeries to come, more scars as well depending on how invasive the doctors have to work.
But despite the weird feeling on their skin and underneath their fingertips, Whumpee doesn’t feel bad about the scars. They don’t want to die, so what are some scars compared to living longer than anyone could have ever guessed?
Whumpee scoffs, unsure if they are amused or not. Once they have their shirt on, the scars are gone—as is the weird feeling.

Trope of the day: power cut

Caretaker has worked in worse environments than this one, has done things no one would ever believe them. When the lights went out, they didn't even think twice and had everyone calm down.
There is nothing to worry about.
Whumpee, however, seems a bit confused as to why Caretaker is so calm, having them hold the torch and shine the light on their wound, so Caretaker can sew it up properly.
"I don't know if this was done on purpose by someone or not, but I'll make sure you're okay," Caretaker says, their eyes fixed on the wound.
"I don't like being in the dark," Whumpee says, which makes Caretaker look up. They give them a quick smile.
"If you stay calm and keep holding the torch for me, it won't be that dark." Whumpee swallows hard and nods, relaxing again and holding the light steady.
Whumptober #25
Trope of the day: left to die
_
Whumpee can feel their desparation and their panic grow as they try to hurry behind the others, who don't stop, won't stop.
Their wounds bleed and throb, their body hurts.
And they can't keep up with the others.
Please. Please don't leave me ...
A fear that rings in their ears, but not in their own voice. Because they can't speak, too weak to move their tongue.
With their blurred vision, they look forward, see that one of them has turned around ... and hurries away like the others.
Whumpee feels their weak knees give in and collapses, hearing Whumper's group coming closer as their heavy lids finally close.
Whumptober #24
Trope of the day: “I must confess that I feel like a monster.” _
Whumper's hands shake as they sit outside the room where Whumpee is regaining consciousness. They overdid it, but they were forced to continue.
They cannot act without their bosses consent, and even Whumpee seemed to have realised that.
Making sure that no one else is here, Whumper sneaks into Whumpee's room, surprised to see them awake. But instead of being scared of them, flinching by Whumper coming closer, Whumpee nods at them.
“I ... I must confess that I feel like a monster,” Whumper croaks, feeling their mouth run dry. “I want this to stop as much as you do.”
Whumpee looks at them for a long second, half of their face swollen and bruised. But they crack a smile.
“You don't look much like a monster to me.”
Whumptober #23
Trope of the day: “How’d I get to this place?”

A groan escapes their lips when Whumpee finally manages to open their eyes. Their lids feel heavy, almost as if they are glued to the eyes.
Painless.
Why don’t they feel pain?
Their heartbeat quickens as they fight against the tiredness. Against their body that is still begging for rest. Whumpee grunts when they try to move, but a hand pushes them back.
Back on the mattress.
Mattress … How long since they have had the luxury of one of these?
“How’d I get to this place?”, Whumpee manages to croak, tongue heavy and mouth dry. Their sight is blurred, lids falling close again.
The voice that answers is weirdly familiar, weirdly calming. Although they can’t even decipher what they are saying.
Whumpee loses consciousness, their body relaxing.

Trope of the day: self-sacrifice
_
It was never supposed to end like this. Never supposed to even get this far.
Whumpee looks back over their shoulder, feeling their heart drop when they can’t see Caretaker behind them anymore. They were there just seconds ago … were they?
Panic makes them stop in their tracks, turn around and run to find the other, only to see them standing in front of Whumper. Whumpee quickly hides, trying to listen to what the others are saying.
“I won’t let you. They are long gone by now,” Caretaker says, their voice strong. They seem unbothered by Whumper, despite their unfair advantage. “They have suffered enough.”
Whumpee’s eyes burn with tears, heartbeat picking up several paces.
They need to run.
They can’t help Caretaker, not with their injuries.
They need to run and honour the other’s self-sacrifice.
But Whumpee can’t.
Whumptober #21
Trope of the day: “Sold my soul, broke my bones.”

“We … we had a funeral for you,” Caretaker says as they look at Whumpee, who came here, scarred and limping. But alive. “A funeral with an empty casket.”
“I was alive,” Whumpee spits, bitterness dripping from their voice. “You left me to die in a ditch. Why didn’t you come back?”
It’s a question Caretaker has asked themselves since that day. A question without an answer. They open their mouth, but Whumpee cuts them off.
“I sold my soul, broke my bones for you all for years. And you thanked me with an empty casket. Your regret is not enough to pay for what I have been through.” Whumpee gets up, wincing in pain. They grab their cane and walk towards the door. “Keep that casket buried, you won’t see me again.”
Caretaker watches helplessly as their once best friend leaves into the cold of the night, making them shiver like they have been visited by a ghost.
Whumptober #20
Trope of the day: resignation
_
The day Whumpee stopped begging should have been enough. It should have been enough for Whumper to realise that something is wrong.
But they thought that maybe they were just too scared and broken to beg, that it was something else that made them shut up.
Now they just look into empty eyes, a tired face that is so different from what they used to see. Whumpee does what Whumper tells them to, never speaking, never trembling.
They got used to it.
Whumpee has accepted that this won’t end with their begging. Their resignation makes Whumper furious, although they don’t let it out on Whumpee. Not yet.
It’s their empty eyes that haunt them in their sleep.
Now Whumper has become the haunted one.
Whumptober #19
Trope of the day: "You're on your own, lost in the wild."

Whumpee has been running and running without looking back. Forward, never standing still. Wherever they went, no one could ever keep them from running.
No one would ever be safe from Whumper if they stayed too long.
They once triumphantly told them that they will never settle down, that they are alone. "You're on your own, lost in the wild," Whumper had said back then.
And they were right. They still are.
But has become increasingly difficult to run once more. Since they have met Caretaker, Whumpee's life has changed. They don't feel as alone as they used to.
And they know that it is foolish and dangerous to hold onto this.
Can't they just stay a little longer? Enjoy Caretaker's soothing words a bit more until it is too late? Whumpee is tired, so tired from running.
They need to remember Whumper's words, which feel so far away.
They need to remember before it's too late.
Whumptober #18
Trope of the day: environmental whump
_
Their body feels cold. Icy rain hits them, runs down their face and soaks up in their clothes, making their body shiver. Whumpee has to keep walking, has to keep up the strength to finally make it to safety.
They stumble through the forest, difficult terrain.
Whumpee trips and falls in the darkness, hands and knees wet with mud. Their cold body makes it hard to keep walking, strength leaving them with every passing minute.
Tiredness pulls on their heavy lids; rumbling thunder makes them jump and hurry forward. They are stuck here, with no shelter in sight.
Rain, icy cold. Wind, too strong.
Whumpee feels their hands and feed grow numb.
How can they make it out of here alive?
Whumptober #17
Trope of the day: “Tell me there’s a hope for me.”
_
Whumpee feels a weird sense of calmness inside them. They feel … resigned. Tired and exhausted.
It has been a few days since they have seen anyone, not wanting to burden anyone with their weird mood, the sense of dread that has been haunting them for too long. But the days alone made them feel accustomed to it.
Maybe this is just normal.
Just as normal as being alone and not wanting anyone around them.
The weird feeling, however, returns when Caretaker visits them unprompted. A smile on their face and groceries in their hands. The resignation fades with every word the other speaks to them, with every sign they give them that they are, in fact, not alone.
That they are not as hopeless as they have made themselves believe.
“Tell me there’s a hope for me,” Whumpee croaks when Caretaker asks them if everything is all right.
Because it isn’t.
Whumptober #16
Trope of the day: repressed trauma
_
Everything is fine. At least that is what they have always told themselves. Caretaker has been good at ignoring the weird feeling in their stomach, the nausea and the racing heart.
Their body is cold and hot at the same time when they stitch up Whumpee, who keeps talking to them as if nothing is happening. Because they are used to it.
Caretaker always told themselves that they are also used to it, that they have to be. But they see the other's bloody and pale body in front of them - which is not normal.
Whumpee is breathing, they are fine and their skin a healthy colour. Just a small wound that needs to be patched up.
And yet it feels like the day they almost lost Whumpee.
They never talked about it, Caretaker always thanked themselves for acting quickly and being able to save the other, but ... the images are still there. They are haunting them.
Caretaker nods when Whumpee thanks them, letting their guard down as soon as the other leaves, hands shaking, breath heaving.
Everything is fine.
