Seven months, give or take a few days. Since “The End”. The big battle, the one they prepared for for years, and it had finally ended one day in May 2011, when Setrakus Ra got himself killed and some Mog guy Adam sort of took over and surrendered to the Loric Resistance.
Nine was thinking, staring out over the city of Chicago. His home. He tried to ignore the wrecked buildings in some areas, there was still need for refurbishment. They – they being the vast array of humans who practically owed their lives to the Garde – had rebuilt the John Hancock Centre in just under three days, through a mix of strength and speed the world hadn't quite come to terms with yet. Not paid or anything, not told to do so by a government force, but because they wanted to and because they were grateful. It looked and felt different to the penthouse Nine had lived in with Sandor, but it was home. It was where the other Garde were, and as long as they were with him, he was home.
Geez, has it really only been two years since Sandor and Maddy and trapping that one Mog in the elevator and the ensuing shit-storm it caused? It feels longer, as if decades have passed without him noticing. He feels... older. Much older. Like someone who has seen too many things it too small a time, and he has.
The air was cold, and it was only when something wet and icy landed on his nose that he noticed it had started snowing. Nine smiled wide, and looked up at the falling drops.
His heart skips a beat at the sight. The snowflakes look like stars, and the way they're falling – there's a pattern to them, as if they're swaying to a beat, sparkling and shimmering like stars, falling stars and he feels like he could reach out and catch one, but he doesn't want to, because it's so beautiful and majestic and he's never seen snow like this and -
He isn't alone on the rooftop any more. Marina is standing next to him, a mere arms length away. Her arm is stretched out into the wide open space over the edge and she's twitching her fingers this way and that, at regular intervals – the same pattern the snow is moving to, Nine realises.
Marina is breathtaking in that moment, her eyes shining like they haven't in months. Her mouth open in awe at herself, and this time Nine's heart doesn't skip a beat, but he becomes self aware of every pump, and he realises that right now nothing would make him more happier than putting his arms around Marina and brushing her hair to the side, swaying with her to that irresistible beat, staring at the snow and the hope it brought with it's fleeting come and go lifespan.
Lorien knows, he's starting to sound like Johnny, but Nine finds he doesn't care. He doesn't care about anything except Marina and how brave she is, how powerful, and how amazing it is to see how far she's come since they met at Dulce.
Marina pulls her arms to her sides, but the snow continues its hypnotic stance. “This time last year I was in Spain, at the convent. I wonder what they're all doing now, now that they know about me? The other girls are probably talking to each other and saying, remember Marina, that girl who almost drowned that one time? Yeah, well she's an alien and she saved the world from those aliens a few months ago.”
Nine understands, he does. “You know, I met these two guys while I was living here before everything started getting serious. They were called Mike, both of them. I wonder if they're laughing together somewhere below, talking about that time they showed up that alien,”
“You know, I like this. Not having to worry about our lives or avenging our loved ones. We have time to grieve, to move on from things.”
Marina thinks:
Adelina. (the one who reminded her of home)
Hector. (the one who was a friend to her when she needed it most)
Eight. (the one she could have loved)
Nine thinks:
Sandor. (the best guardian he could ask for)
Maddy. (the girl who could have been)
Five. (because damn it if there wasn't guilt about that self-sacrificing bastard's death)
Then they look at each other. They're never going to forget about these years, how could they? But they could move on, make better memories, a future. A world of peace.
They should be going back to Lorien soon, once Earth's league of overnight super geniuses constructed a ship. Which should be finished around three months from now. What an Easter that'll be, Nine thinks.
Marina's hair blows in the wind, and Nine moves closer.
“You know, I've been thinking, when we get back to Lorien, we could make a monument. For all the people who got us to this point.” Marina whispers, staring into Nine's eyes.
And then Nine falls into Marina, and Marina falls into Nine and all they can think about is nothing and everything at the same time. They're moving on. They're moving to each other.
A firework goes off in the distance, and the two pull away from each other. Nine smiles like he's won the lottery, and shouts, “Merry Christmas!”, raising his and Marina's arms into the air. Nine looked sideways at Marina before he started singing a Christmas carol at the top of his voice to an invisible audience. Marina tilted her head to the side in amusement before joining in with the second chorus of some parody version of Silent Night, not quite sure what else to do, and feeling warm and fuzzy and safe because this was such a Nine thing to do.
They stay there, singing song after song into the crisp air with the snow moving and glowing around them like the galaxies of the universe, only going inside when they'd run out of carols to sing and Nine started shivering.
It was going to be the best Christmas they'd ever had – and their first together.

yep here’re the blog chibis for sevenmarinas + welcome-to-lorien for my 200 follower thingy i did. i will shortly do one for booksforlions, as well. :)
so, here ya go! the adam x one ones are for welcome-to-lorien, and the mar ones are for sevenmarinas. :)
so guys i can make calendars and stuff for the ship weeks thing. I'd say only do one or two popular ships a month and the others can be unpopular ships (like sam x adam) so people can still get their sam/adam fix if they ship it, but gives people who have a popular ship a chance to make edits & stuff.
People are in school now (except for me so much time on my hands) so giving notice a while before hand can give time to make gifsets or edits if they really want to participate in one of them. We can take request for the ships (and maybe i can set up something on surveymonkey so we see which ones are most popular so we know how to space them out) and i can make a page specifically for this if no one else wants to (dont worry you will get credit for your ideas since I did not think of this!!)
i am really excited about this and i really want it to happen so i appreciate any feedback.
