There Is No Antimemetics Division, by qntm (Sam Hughes)
I picked up this book a few nights ago intending to read for an hour or so until I fell asleep. Shortly afterwards, I realized it was after midnight and I'd devoured almost half the book.
Stuff I liked, in no particular order:
- Every narrator is unreliable, and they know it.
- World building and exposition are delivered without bogging down the plot.
- Marie Quinn, small, unassuming middle aged lady and ruthless, lethally clever protector of humanity. Badass action hero with none of the trappings and motifs of a badass action hero.
- The quiet, chilling horror of not just dying, but vanishing from everyone's memory.
Go read this book if you like horror and having your mind twisted up in the best possible way.
