There was even entertainment in the mornings. Speeches in the square. Marches, sometimes, too. Decorative uniforms and sleek words. Good words. They were plain and good and Anya understood work and it’s value. When she finished sweeping a street, it was cleaner. That was good, and she was paid and that was better. So she got her assignment every day and swept the street, usually in the area around the Prospekt and the square, and listened to the speeches as she did her work.

And if the man giving the speeches sometimes lingered when he looked at her, well, that was nothing to be concerned about.

Oh, wow. This means I have to dig up playlists I created years ago! And narrow them down! 😛I guess these are the big ones...

Out of the Woods: “Sound of Silence” - Kina Grannis and “Lost Cause” - Beck

Unsung: “My Favourite Faded Fantasy” by Damien Rice and “Kristallen Den Fina” (Swedish folk song, this version in particular), but “Silent All These Years” by Tori Amos deserves an honorable mention

By Starlight: “Ancients” by Gary Numan and “Breathe Me” by Sia? Or maybe Chopin’s “Nocturne No. 20 in C-Sharp Minor”? I don’t know, it was honestly such a weird mix.

Also I feel like I should note that Sufjan Steven’s “To Be Alone With You” has ended up on almost every one of my playlists, because I am a sap.

This was fun, and I’m feeling so nostalgic now! Thanks so much, @sfiddy!

Ooh interesting ask, thanks! 😊 Similar to @a-partofthenarrative, I’ve written a couple phics based around a song (from Mozart’s Don Giovanni because LEROUX) but don’t usually make playlists or listen to particular music for inspiration. I was able to come up with a few things, though 😄

Elixir of Love - I think “Time Is Running Out” by Muse is a good fit for Erik in this (technically E/C but sneakily R/C) story...

You're something beautiful/A contradiction/I want to play the game/I want the friction/You will be/The death of me

I wanted freedom/Bound and restricted/I tried to give you up/But I'm addicted

While We Were Driving - Lots of angst packed into this little phic, so I’ll go with “Straight for the Knife” by Sia for Christine here.

You turned the gas on high/Held the flame alight/You wonder why/I'm scared of fire/ You wonder why you make girls cry

My mascara a mess, harsh words for your princess/Boy, you and your promises/If your goal was to love, you scored an epic miss/Now you'll just have memories

Ghost (Angel of Music AU) - This story is the exception! I had the prompt from the Inktober 2019 list, but the inspiration really came from the song “Freaking Me Out” by Ava Max.

Like a spider, there's a web that you have wove/There's a heart now, where there used to be a ghost

Balcony Duet by @sfiddy

He let the last notes linger, hanging in the air, as long as he could before he reluctantly released the sustain. As they silenced, Erik opened his eyes and raised his mask to gently wipe the collected moisture underneath, caught in the misshapen twists and ridges of his… face.

Applause. One person. There was applause for his playing.

Grace Note:

“If the world was ending” by JP Saxe feat. Julia Michaels

“Your Song” by Elton John

The first captures their relationship at the very beginning and also when everything bad happens to them. The second is just a good song for Erik’s character in this fic- especially after the last few chapters.

Lilacs in the Louis-Philippe Room:

“Lovely” by Billie Eilish

“Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me” by Lana Del Ray

Both make me think of Christine in this fic, just trying to find some sliver of happiness while being trapped by Erik at every turn.

Toile de Jouy:

“Breathe Me” by Sia

“Lovely” by Billie Eilish (again)

These both reflect the overall dark atmosphere and Christine’s thoughts during this fic.

(This ask made me remember most of my writing is pretty depressing, lol. I have a special place in my heart for dark fics)

1) I always remember and love this bit from The Great Gatsby: 

“Almost the last thing I remember was standing with Daisy and watching the moving-picture director and his Star. They were still under the white plum tree and their faces were touching except for a pale, thin ray of moonlight between. It occurred to me that he had been very slowly bending toward her all evening to attain this proximity, and even while I watched I saw him stoop one ultimate degree and kiss at her cheek.”

2) This exchange from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: 

“You see!" said a strained voice. Tonks was glaring at Lupin. "She still wants to marry him, even though he's been bitten! She doesn't care!" "It's different," said Lupin, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense. "Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely-" "But I don't care either, I don't care!" said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupin's robes and shaking them.
