The Fortitude Budget is the fourth intervention in 2020 and adds another $33b to bring this year’s Budget support to a whopping $100b to fight COVID-19 which amounts to about 20% of GDP. Around half of this is coming out of our Reserves. It will take some time to fully trickle down to Singaporeans because of the various schemes and payment tranches and it certainly isn’t going to all appear at the same time. But it will go a long way. And we’re able to do this because we’ve been prudent and responsible. Amid all the noise and clamor I do hope common sense and reason win out and that people see why populism and playing to the shrill selfish calls of the gallery may sound great in the short run but will fail us and our children in the long run. During these unprecedented challenging times, it is inevitable that there will be some job losses. While the government is unable to protect every job, we will protect every worker. #SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package will create close to 100,000 opportunities, comprising 40,000 jobs, 25,000 traineeships and 30,000 places for skills training. One major component from Budget 2020 announced last week, is how the government will continue to care for our seniors. I'm glad that the government does not only look after their healthcare needs, but also makes sure they are able to meet their retirement needs. The government will match CPF retirement account top-ups dollar-for-dollar for lower to middle income Singaporeans aged 55 to 70, capped at $600 a year, from 2021 to 2025. There will also be 20% increase in payouts for those under Silver Support Scheme. During my house visits, some residents expressed their concerns and worries for local businesses that may have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. This is partly why during Budget 2020, DPM Heng announced that there will be a Stabilisation and Support Package. Part of the package will go to helping our hawkers, private hire drivers, shop owners, and those in the tourism and aviation sectors.
