The Fortitude Budget is the fourth intervention in 2020 and adds another $33b to bring this year’s Budget support to a whopping $100b to fight COVID-19 which amounts to about 20% of GDP. Around half of this is coming out of our Reserves. It will take some time to fully trickle down to Singaporeans because of the various schemes and payment tranches and it certainly isn’t going to all appear at the same time. But it will go a long way. And we’re able to do this because we’ve been prudent and responsible. Amid all the noise and clamor I do hope common sense and reason win out and that people see why populism and playing to the shrill selfish calls of the gallery may sound great in the short run but will fail us and our children in the long run. If you’re part of the #silentmajority, speaking up every now and then helps to remind us that we haven’t gone mad and that sanity still prevails out there. Now, pls pls let’s not do this again. 😭 ・・・ [Fortitude Budget: Tackling the Challenge Together] Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister @hengsweekeat delivered a Ministerial Statement on Tue, 26 May 2020, outlining a $33bn supplementary Budget to bolster the next phase of our fight against COVID-19. The Fortitude Budget focuses on: • Jobs and livelihoods: allowing our workers and businesses to adapt, transform and pivot towards new opportunities, to emerge stronger in a post-COVID-19 world; • Additional support to households and community to adjust to the new environment; and • Supporting our frontline agencies to continue our fight against the pandemic. The situation remains fluid, but the Government will continue to listen, evaluate, plan ahead, communicate and work with you.
