replaying Veilguard (again) and i spent a lot of time rereading the backstory it gives you when you make your selection. I once again pick the Shadow Dragons. Which, of course, led me to start thinking about The Nessus Job and what exactly went down.
During your selection, this is the information you are given:
From this, we get a few things:
Rook and a visiting dignitary (I want to say at some point they specify this person was a Magister but I can’t find any confirmation right now) are investigating a slavery ring for the Shadows
Something goes wrong and Rook chooses chaos
The two kill the Venatori and free the slaves, somehow make it out in one piece, and the whole thing is enough to get the Magisterium involved and Rook needs to gtfo out of Minrathous for a while.
We also know that, given the plot, Varric is involved in some way
That alone is fairly vague, likely by design. But later dialogue choices give us a little more insight
(all of these transcripts come from @datvtranscripts)
Rook: I met Varric when he asked the Shadow Dragons for help freeing an old friend from Venatori slavers. The Shadow Dragons had a safe plan that wasn’t going to work.
Okay. So that’s a piece of information that’s never addressed outside of this conversation w/ Solas. Who were they freeing? How do they know Varric?
(This might’ve been addressed in The Missing tie-in comics but I haven’t read those so I can’t be certain)
Rook and a visiting dignitary are investigating a slavery ring for the Shadows.
The Shadows are involved because 1) freeing slaves in their whole deal 2) Varric called in a favor to help a friend
Something happens that leads Rook to scrap the original plan
The resulting situation is so messy that several Magisters want Rook dead and the Shadow Dragons bench them as soon as they get back to Minrathous.
Again, somewhat intentionally vague. We don’t know who’s involved or how they got there.
If anyone else knows more information, please share it because I have several questions.
