Ten years later, the archery scene in Equestria Girls: Friendship Games is one of my favourite parts of the whole movie (second only to Sunset becoming a seraphim).
Despite succeeding in the academic portion of the games, it's clear that Twilight isn't as athletically gifted as the other Shadowbolts.
She's trying her best, and yet she's the reason her team is falling behind in the relay race and at risk of losing altogether. Twilight starts buckling under the pressure, missing arrow after arrow. And all the while, neither Sour Sweet or any of her own teammates are helping or giving her a shred of encouragement, only getting frustrated with her and shouting insults.
Between being watched by everyone, berated, about to lose, and her study program application still being dangled over her by her evil principal, it all comes crashing down. The poor girl's now trembling and about to break down in tears.
It's genuinely hard to watch. Something tells me that this scene hit close to home for viewers with extreme anxiety.
Finally Applejack gets fed up with their lack of support and walks over to give Twilight some tips.
Bear in mind, Applejack doesn't know this version of Twilight. She's aware they're in the middle of a competition and that stepping in to help Twilight could hurt Canterlot High's chances of winning. And given their intense rivalry with Crystal Prep, Applejack wasn't under any obligation to reach out... and she did anyway.
The Friendship Games indeed.
Despite Sour Sweet screaming at her to not listen to a rival student, Twilight takes in how Applejack's actually talking to her supportively and chooses to believe her advice. As a result, her self-confidence is boosted and she finally succeeds at hitting the target, allowing her team to continue.
And the cherry-on-top moment where AJ goes in for a high-five only to get a hug instead is just... AWWW
Whether pony or human, Applejack will always be one of my favourite MLP characters.
