Something that’s been…idk if “bugging” is the right word, but it’s been in my mind a while. Cinder is the Maiden of Choice, and Penny of Creation, and it fits them. Yet there’s so much emphasis that when Penny asks Jaune to kill her, she says “let me CHOOSE this one thing” and I was just wondering what you thought about that? If it means anything in the long run?
i think, in general, rwby puts a lot of importance on choice. out of all the four gifts the brother gods gave humanity, choice is the one that's lauded as the most important one; you can have the ability to create and destroy, to have the knowledge how to do so, but if you don't actually choose to follow through, it matters very little.
but it's not just about the ability to choose, it's the ability to make informed choices, and the ability to choose differently in the future.
and that's something that is relevant to all the characters. penny particularly struggled with making her own choices because of all the titles – the protector of mantle, the winter maiden, even her being the one to save the world – she had been given affecting how other's treated her. those titles weren't something that penny chose, and more often than not they were the type that led to penny being more separated from other people, including her friends.
i don't know if it necessarily means anything in the long run, rather it's an incredibly tragic moment, a culmination of struggles penny has gone through most of her life, unable to choose how she lives it.
