Shadows Between Us is the most despicable book i've had the misfortune of reading
I don’t know what prompted this but yeah it was SO BAD, the way the entire plot hinged on hair dye??? No one recognized the missing crown prince because he DYED HIS HAIR?? And the protagonist immediately clocks that this guy is bad news because his hair dye comes off on her hand (why is it just coming off like that) and anyone who dyes their hair is obviously!! up to something nefarious!!
Remember when not!Robin Hood steals their lunch? Remember when Alessandra decides that she hates a guy because he gives money to orphanages?
Just absolute insanity. Also I will probably think about this line on my deathbed.
But speaking of Darkling copies, I strongly suspect this coming out a little after the og Demon in the Wood short story was initially released and made a huge thing about ✨magic reasons he can’t touch people✨ was not a coincidence lmao
11/05 - this was my book clubs pick for November and I gotta say I was pretty disappointed but I’m going in with an open mind. I got 25% through and it’s very fast paced and so far the protagonist is very annoying. It has very pro sex feminist themes it screams in your face that come off more of a mockery than any kind of real representation and the love interest is very bleh he’s just there sometimes hardly at all really. Each chapter introduces some new problem that is almost resolved miraculously by the end of the chapter or by the next. Still kinda lost on what the actual plot is supposed to be

Shadows Between Us was my buddy read with the sweet sweet @whyemmawhyyy and honestly she was the motivation that got me through this!
I know a lot of my booksta friends want to read this so I have refrained from writing anything that is even considers a mild spoiler but please be warned just in case. Also want to say that this book is loved by MANY so I could just be that one odd person out of millions!
I went into this hoping for it to be so amazing and for me to end up loving it but I actually found it difficult to get through especially the first few chapters. I only enjoyed the last several chapters and I enjoyed the moments. I particularly disliked how manipulative the MC was but at least it all comes to light so that was good.
I could not relate to the MC however, I liked that she designed her own clothes I found that idea to be very original. Her confidence and the way she won't hesitate to speak her mind or to stand up for what she believed in was well done. Kallias's shadows and his power was actually very interesting. His character was well constructed although he was a horrible king. I quite enjoyed the side characters and particularly loved how the writing was so descriptive about the last queen. It tugged at my heartstrings and I know just from those little moments that she must have been magnificent.
Enemies to lovers? More like "I don't know this stranger and he's done nothing wrong to me but I'm gonna kill him and take his kingdom for myself even though I know nothing about running a kingdom". Talk about being ambitious.
Conclusion was that they deserved each other and that Demodocus is bae. I loved the plot however, I felt that it had so much potential that was left unused.

So I started The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller two days ago and i finished it at 2:00am today - I honestly would’ve probably read it in a day if I didn’t have work. OH MY GOD WOW IT WAS SO GOOD!!!! I think every book I read from Tricia gets better and better. Like her Daughter of the Pirate King duology was reaaalllllyyyy good - but like this standalone really knocked it out of the park. It was perfect. A royalty romance where one of the pair is secretly trying to kill the other (and meanwhile there's fake dating - incredible we love a well done trope) 😍 And wow the sexual tension that formed between Alessandra and Kallias * chefs kiss * Kallias has shadows floating around him and no one is allowed to touch him - WHICH MAKES THE TENSION ALL THE BETTER. I swear at one point they thought they actually touched but didn’t (the importance of the no touching will make sense when you read it) and my note in the book was literally: “GODDAMMIT THIS NO TOUCHING TENSION IS KILLING ME i love it” I was so 100% here for it.
But besides the tension the characters were so amazing I loved every single one of them - they were so fleshed out and real; Alessandra and Kallias are both just a touch wicked (on the first page we learn Alessandra literally killed her first love when she learned he was using her).You assume Alessandra is the type to not have female friends - but the two she gains she has a real and genuine connection with them and would kill for their happiness - I really loved the female friendships in this. AND SO MANY REAL AND WELL INCORPORATED FEMINISTS MESSAGES like Alessandra is the feminist champion we all need (and honestly Kallias too). what else what else... there was just so much good in this book. It’s a standalone and I wish it was longer, but at the same it was the perfect length. Tricia is literally a wizard at writing and she’s legitimately becoming one of my favorite writers. Period. She’s that incredible.
EVERYONE GO READ THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE and then come talk to me about it!!!!
Basically this was the perfect book to read after the disaster that was The Betrothed (ugh I feel nauseous even thinking about that “book” - really it was like scraps of semi-formed thoughts put together)
So to continue on my fangirl journey of Tricia Levenseller, I’m going to read her other standalone that came out before The Shadows Between Us: Warrior of the Wild. This is a viking inspired fantasy novel - I’m pumped.
