Okay, listen...

If you like "The Dresden Files" and also "Welcome to Nightvale"...or have at least a passing familiarity with both of those, you should ABSOLUTELY read "Love is All You Need to Destroy Your Enemies" by ShadyDave.

It is...a 10+ year old fic.

It is more than 200K words.

I have read it multiple times.

The premise? Carlos (TDF) is Carlos (you know, the scientist?) from WTN. Nightvale is weird because #magic.

That's all you need to know.

It is poignant. It's fucking hilarious. It's incredibly well written.

Waiting for the bus in the rain

A banner and playlist made for @davetheshady ‘s wonderful “Waiting for the Bus in the Rain”, her sequel to “Love is all you need to destroy your enemies”. 

I have no idea where this story is going, so the image is entirely based around aesthetic, more than plot points. 

The background is from Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, Danny Pino is playing the role of Carlos, and Julie is imperfectly represented by artist Maya Lin.

Like with the banner, it doesn’t connect to specific plot elements (though the timeline in the story is sufficiently loopy that it *could*). It’s sadly lacking in prog-rock, which Word-of-Dave says is Julie’s genre.

“Thanks,” says the officer with the phone, and does a double-take. “I mean – thank you. So… you’re a scientist, too?”

Carlos looks around. The scientists are wearing business casual, button-downs, wrinkled khakis, college t-shirts; they have pens and styluses sticking out of their pockets, behind their ears, through their hair.

He’s wearing slightly charred fatigues and still holding a grime-spattered sword.

He gives the officers his best cocky grin.

“Yes, I definitely am,” he says.

His past self would have collapsed halfway up the first flight of steps, whereas he is probably going to collapse at a much higher altitude and then roll all the way back down.

“I’m sure most of you have probably noticed us around town by now,” says Carlos, “So we wanted to introduce ourselves properly. We’re the research team from the university and we’re going to be collecting data from Night Vale and its environs. Our team consists of some of the country’s leading experts in geology and theoretical physics—” “What’s your degree in, Carlos?” someone calls out. “Sufficiently advanced technology,” he says. He hears a muffled snort from off-stage. “As I was saying, we’re all highly qualified scientists,” he continues, and somehow manages to keep a straight face.

There are a few things that Carlos may have neglected to tell Cecil.

Like his last name.

Or how he hasn’t actually dated anyone since his junior year of high school.

Or that he’s a wizard of the White Council and the regional commander of Wardens in the western United States and not, in fact, a scientist.

You know. Minor details.
