Maaan, this Ernest Chiriacka illustration has been in my K/S inspiration folder for over a year now!! Thank you for making this post—this was the push I needed to finally make it happen xD
✨ Full size on AO3 ✨
I’ve been cackling about this for like five minutes now
He’s absolutely right.
Also, the Joker started killing innocents for fun and profit in Batman #1 (published April 24, 1940) and has been killing his henchmen since at least 1975.
(He poisoned a former employee named Dubek with a rare tropical disease. By the way, Dubek was in prison and was refusing to tell the prison administration squat about the Joker. So Dubek was completely loyal–out of fear, granted, but still loyal–and the Joker murdered him anyway.)
Don’t forget that in B:TAS, they weren’t allowed to show him straight-up murdering people, so he also canonically uses motherfucking nerve gas. Which is HORRIBLE AND INTERNATIONALLY ILLEGAL TO THE POINT THAT HAVING IT IS A WAR CRIME. Not even using it! Just having it!
Like. Your best-case scenario as a Joker henchman is that, when facing down the motherfucking Batman, you start crying and telling him you were trying to pay off your student loans, and he sends you home and the next day you get a phone call from Wayne Industries with a job offer. And then you have to hope the Joker doesn’t fucking find you.
Meanwhile working for Lex Luthor is basically just an Amazon job with a slightly higher chance of getting lightly shoved by Superman, which you could probably get a company insurance payout for if you pretend you’re actually trying to fight him first
NGL I feel like if you started crying because of your student loans while dealing with Superman he’d be like “hit me” and you’d be like “….what” and he’d be like “HIT ME, that way you can claim it’s a workplace accident” and then he’d knock you out.
Like he would 100% be onboard with helping you pay your loans. (And then he’d call Bruce and be like “I have somebody in Metropolis who needs a job….”)
Lex luthor I thought was supposed to be a decent person just anti superman?
Come on now, you should know by now that rich business man = super evil person.
Ehhhhhhh it strongly depends on the continuity and the writer, but I’d say on the whole he’s definitely not a decent person. There are a couple where Lex is legitimately a good guy but is a villain on account of being incredibly paranoid about Superman. There’s probably even more where he’s an out and out cackling mad scientist. If I had to pin what I’d call his defining characterization, it’s someone who thinks of himself as a champion of humanity, but who in reality is quite self-centered, is willing blithely sacrifice people to advance his goals, abuses whatever power he has, and who acts out against Superman primarily because of an inferiority complex. The movie version of All Star Superman captured it pretty well:
Luthor, to Superman: “If it wasn’t for you, I could have saved the world!” Superman: “If it had mattered to you, Luthor, you could have saved the world years ago.” Luthor: “…You’re right.”
Lex Luthor: Man of Steel is another comic which I think does a beautiful job of building up and them brutally demolishing the “Lex Luthor is a decent guy to everyone but Superman” idea.
I seem to remember there was a comic at some point where the atmosphere was flooded with kryptonite so Superman had to leave for a year. When the kryptonite was gone he came back and went to Lex and was like “Okay, I was out of your hair for a year. Where are all the improvements to the human condition you said you could get done with me gone?” and Lex just didn’t have an answer because he’d still been doing supervillain stuff all year.
I don’t know what comic this was but I definitely remember this scenario happening?
SUPERMAN 653:
For context, in this story Lex is trying to destroy Metropolis because they don’t appreciate him anymore. But it’s all Superman’s fault. Sure, Lex.
Hey, it does exist! Thanks!

I just saw an anon come into a gif-maker’s ask box and start with the phrase: “I’m trying not to spam your inbox with reblogs, but” and then go on to say how much they love the gifs.
But I’m still stuck on that opening phrase because…what? I am so confused by how people view interactions on tumblr & AO3 these days. Let me make it very clear for anyone who is unsure:
CREATORS WANT YOU TO INTERACT WITH THEIR WORK.
The limit does not exist on how many of their works you can interact with in a certain period.
If you like every fic they’ve ever written? Then feel free to give them all kudos and even leave a comment on every single one if you feel inclined! If you’re going through someone’s blog and you vibe with every post, like/reblog to your heart’s content!
As long as you’re not expecting something back from them or adding a ton of irrelevant comments, it’s not spam! It’s what this is all about!! I’m not even much of a creator and I still feel a huge sense of pride when I see a ton of notifications in a row from a person, as it clearly shows they thought my blog was worth spending time on.
And if for some reason a creator is annoyed by this (unlikely), they can manage their own experience (turn off notifs, not look at their notes, delete the fic, etc) -- so don’t deprive the majority of creators because of some imagined annoyed person. Fandom is a collaborative effort and we all must participate!
yes. this. thank you. I'm glad someone said it. spam me. as long as you're not a hot trying to steal my information I do not care :)
sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.
it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

A misunderstanding
Your partner came back from the dead after being missing for decades. Every one of their friends who they went with ended up dying a horrible death.
Now, somehow, their entire mental health is based on the continued life and happiness of this fairground goldfish that they picked up.
Neither of you know the first thing about how to care for even a healthy fish. This fish has been poorly cared for, has multiple diseases and the person who handed it over explicitly didn't expect it to live nearly as long as it already has.
You're frantically googling how to set up a fish tank, where to buy fish food, can you even take a fish to the vet? Your partner wants you to know that they're happy they made it home and survived their horrific ordeal, but also that if anything happens to the fish then they're going to kill everyone on this planet and then themself.
You're honestly wondering if you're even helping the fish, or just prolonging its suffering, but your partner will only accept medical help for their many injuries or engage in basic self-care once they're confident that the fish is being looked after.
So you get a tank. You set up a filter and all that stuff. You learn way more than you ever wanted to know about water temperature and ph and nitrate levels. The fish is safe. You start to develop some affection for the little guy. Your partner begins to recover. The fish begins to recover.
Which is when you learn that in its 'healthy' state, the fish regularly refuses to sleep when tired, keeps begging for food that is obviously unhealthy for it (and struggling to eat the food that you do provide because “it tastes gross”), and continually tries to persuade your partner to take it out of its nice safe tank so it can go explore the wonderful world of Outside, where the slightest mishap will kill it instantly.
Your name is Adrian, and you kind of wants to strangle this fucking fish, statement.
what about a shapeshifter who’s bad at it. shapeshifter who can never quite get the nose right. shapeshifter who always makes flipped faces because they’re doing adjustments in the mirror. shapeshifter with same face syndrome. shapeshifter who always dips further into the uncanny valley than they want. shapeshifter who can mimic a single celebrity completely perfectly but struggles to recreate anyone else.

I think, of everything that happened over the course of Project Hail Mary, the lab explosion is what haunts Stratt the most.
Rereading the scene where they talk to Redell in the Auckland prison, Stratt shows such distain for Redell and how his negligence killed 7 people. She doesn’t let him make excuses and try and worm his way out of it. To her, he as the leader of the project has a responsibility toward those people and he failed, and in doing so killed them.
Every other action she takes has purpose. Every death that may be caused by those actions is counterbalanced by thousands of lives it saves. She can live with those decisions, because she knows they had to be made.
The lab explosion never should have happened. It was a mistake on the part of the quartermaster, but if there were additional safety protocols in place, it is a mistake that likely could have been prevented. I don’t think there’s any way that Stratt feels anything other than personally responsible for it.
She was negligent in her duty to ensure the safety of everyone working under her and the project itself, and because of that 14 people died. 14 people who did not need to die, whose deaths did nothing to save humanity.
Not only that, but the events catalysed the need to send the one person she’d let get closer to her to his death.
Of all the crimes she committed in during the project, I think that’s the one she feels like she truly deserves to be imprisoned for.
One of the things that makes me so crazy about the accident is that there was no good reason for both Shapiro and Dubois to be in the lab at the same time.
Ohhhhhh, you're about to go test something extremely dangerous? A cataclysmic failure condition? Sure, let's put both science specialists in a room together while this happens.
Not doing that is basic safety protocol for high stakes missions. WTF. Stratt must have been so mad at herself for not specifying that was never to happen.
Controversial take perhaps but I actually thought that Stratt should have vetoed the relationship between Shapiro and DuBois. Sure they said they were totally objective about it and no way they were gonna let the relationship interfere with any of their duties, but that's. That's just not the kind of thing you can guarantee.
The particular outcome that we got -- that they happened to both be present at the point of a terrible accident -- was an unlikely but foreseeable outcome of them spending all their free time hanging out together. Like that was the explicit reasoning for the two teams not taking transport together.
That being said, yes Stratt would absolutely feel responsible for this, and she would be right. She was in charge.
That is an extremely based take. I also think Stratt would have interfered with that relationship. Maybe it was a thing where it was like, "better this than them running around behind people's backs," but it still feels like a weird thing for her to have ignored.
You mentioning Shapiro maybe ending up pregnant in the tags reminded me of a weird thing I wondered about: were the crew members rendered sterile before they were supposed to board? If it was a mixed crew, then hypothetically people could have ended up hooking up in space, which could have resulted in someone conceiving a baby. How do you deal with that?
