no hurry
tuesday
Another shakeout on another cool overcast evening. 10 miles easy paced to the park and back. Nice and easy on the legs. I forget sometimes that a run will be more pleasant if you’re not in a hurry to finish it.
Pre-#cherryblossomtenmiler #shakeout run done. Despite all the unplanned downtime of late, I felt really good today. With a half-mile to go I threw in a few pickups at race effort (65%). On the last one, I decided to go a little faster. Each time I passed a house, I added 10% more effort, finishing at 95%. Now I need to shower and hustle down to the @cucb expo, then it's on to #audifield for @dcunited vs. @lafc. #unitedathome #vamosunited #runblr #fitblr #springracingseason #masterstrackathlete #northfacedctrailhalf #springrunning #letsdothis (at Mantua, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv618MYhXFz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=s8bjjvwrrano
Shakeout!
Today, October 18th, is the scheduled day for the annual “Shakeout!” drill. Starting in California over a decade ago, the Shakeout drill is a once a year event where everyone should practice what to do in an earthquake.
The official time for the drill is 10:18 a.m. on 10/18.
How do you participate in this drill? If you’re a business, even if your business isn’t in an area where earthquakes are common, encourage your employees to participate and double-check your emergency procedures. If you’re just an individual…find a desk or sturdy table, crawl under it for about 60 seconds, hold onto the table, then review your emergency procedures when you get home.
This year there have been a great number of examples of why you should practice this technique and review your procedures. Strong earthquakes have hit Mexico City, Papua New Guinea, and recently Indonesia. Buildings have crumbled, people have died, and tsunami waves have hit.
These disasters have illustrated the importance of preparation and of appropriate safety responses. If people try to run outside or downstairs during the shaking, they can’t find footing and they may be hit by falling debris from the buildings themselves.
When these disasters have hit, it has sometimes taken days to weeks for relief to arrive. Having water, food, and medical supplies available at home, and especially enough water for 1-2 weeks…that can literally keep you and your family alive.

shake it up
monday
Tired after a long workday, a short nap then was able to get in an 8 mile shake out in the parkway. A slow easy shakeout, that was all. The legs felt better after that.
into the snow
friday
Had a quick shakeout run this afternoon, a 3 miler in the snow, ahead of tomorrow morning’s 10 mile race. A week ago, we were supposed to be snow free this weekend, but this being Western NY and the race being the Lockport 10 Miler, we’re going to have steady snow for most of the weekend. I was hoping the worst would be the cold temps, but oh well...here’s a photo from the race a few years ago, hopefully won’t be this bad tomorrow.
