As I heal, I'm binging Laugh In. It's such a classic comedy show!! It's sad how many things that they make jokes about back then are still true or even worse than they were in the 60s. I think that we should have grown and moved forward together, but unfortunately, we have not. Let's try to make that happen, shall we? That's what I want for Christmas. That and what Dan wants, too... peace and our troops safely at home with their loved ones ❤️ 🙏🏼 I'd be very grateful for that... I'm going to include that in my Thanksgiving prayer... peace and love and flower power!!! 🌼✌🏼❤️
There was something about him.
Something about the way he looked — those ocean-blue eyes, waiting for hope yet sinking into pain. Sonic gazed at him with silent sympathy. The fox gazed back at him, only to look away, the silence thickening between them.
The way he stepped. Trembling legs. Cuts and bruises — every step was a struggle. His fragile body leaned against the rough-edged tree, glancing back at the towering blue hedgehog that stood in front of him.
Scared.
Sonic had never seen a kid this scared. This terrified.
It made his stomach knot painfully.
The gentle summer breeze stirred the silence, lifting the little kit’s yellow-orange fur. Under the warm sun, the blue hedgehog’s emerald-green eyes sparked with hope. He had an idea. It seemed simple — maybe even pointless — but he needed to try. Smiling softly, he crouched down before his fingertips traced along the dirt to form letters. Though Sonic’s heart ached as the fox clung to himself, arms crossed like a shield, he pushed through the misery. Slowly, those letters transformed into words. It read: “U ok?”
The fox hesitated and whimpered a bit, nervously glancing between the ground and the stranger. Eventually, he nodded in response. He sank to the ground too, beside Sonic, his small body shuddering with every shallow breath. Out of fear? Or maybe even out of pain, perhaps? The blue blur would never know. Sonic looked up for a second, his heart melting at the sight of this poor kid. He looked so vulnerable. So fragile.
Sure, Sonic had seen fear before — but this was different.
This wasn’t just any kind of fear — this was body-shaking terror.
And no kid should experience that feeling.
Sonic wrote again as another question popped into his head, desperate for answers: “U hurt?” The kid flinched and looked away. His body was tense, as if he wanted to disappear. Sonic scooted closer in an attempt to comfort the kid. But the moment he did, the child recoiled, gasping quietly for air. Sonic winced, his heart continuing to break at the poor sight, but it didn’t stop his overwhelming desire to console the young kid. Even if Sonic didn’t know how to speak verbally, he had the urge to do whatever it took to help this young stranger. He once again glanced at the kit, confusion and helplessness washing over him.
What had happened to him? Was there more to this situation than Sonic first thought? Why was he alone, even though he was clearly so young? All these paranoid, worried thoughts swirled in his mind — what if’s and what to do’s. First, a bunch of bullies had attacked the small kit. Now this? But why would anyone hurt such a young child!? He looked barely five years old. It didn’t make sense — but Sonic was willing to try.
“Where are your parents?” Sonic wrote on the ground, his hands hovering over the words, the weight of the moment dragging him down. Distress and pain instantly flickered in the young one’s eyes. He shook his head and closed his eyes, covering his ears, trying to make himself seem small. Curling into a ball, trying to shut out the pain that swallowed him whole. Drowning in his nightmares. The tears were building up, ready to spill — and Sonic saw it with his very eyes.
This was the first time something like this had ever happened in Sonic’s life. The blue hedgehog had practically traveled the world by now, but there was no other terrifying, concerning experience quite like this one he could compare with.
Without hesitation — as if instinct took over — Sonic’s breath hitched, and he reached out to the kit’s scratched arm. His soft fingers grazed the messy fur, noticing how small the fox really was. He looked like he hadn’t eaten in days. The fox stiffened, as expected — but then, he leaned into the touch.
Why?
Maybe it was because this was the first time he’d ever experienced such comfort. At least, that’s what Sonic told himself. Sonic’s chest exploded with happiness and joy as the kit nuzzled into his hands before burying his head into the blue blur’s scarred chest. Strong, peach-skinned arms wrapped around the tiny body, as if the kit had found something solid. Something safe to rely on. To feel.
Sonic closed his eyes for a moment, really feeling it — just being there for the kit. Fast, shallow breaths turned into deep, steady breathing. The kit’s heart wasn’t pounding as hard anymore. The sunlight’s rays faintly hit the two of them — the warmth, the comfort, drawing them in closer, even though they were strangers.
For a brief moment, nothing else mattered.
This, right here, felt right.
And Sonic wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
