Värikallio
“The paintings of Värikallio, made with blood and red ochre, are estimated to be 3,500–4,500 years old. More than 60 figures can be identified from the sheer rock wall rising out of Lake Somerjärvi. The mystical animal and human figures are believed to be related to hunting or shamanism.”
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM WITH MOSQUITOES YOU SHOULD GET MOSQUITO HAT BEFORE VISITING THIS PLACE!
For visiting Värikallio you have to walk almost 4km. If the weather is hot and not windy, it means a lot of mosquitoes wait for you. I had a horrible mosquitoes attack there. I tried to close as much as my skin, but I hadn’t mosquito hat with me. When they started to attack, I tried to walk faster and remove them with my hand, but it made everything more horrible because you sweat and breathe more which makes everything more easy for mosquitoes because mosquitoes' chemical sensors can smell human breath, their sensors detect the carbon dioxide released when we exhale. Only my face and hands were open, and they bit every open area like my face, my fingers etc. I had allergic reaction and it was itchy and looks like big pimple. So please don’t underestimate mosquitoes in Lapland.
It was worth to visit Värikallio, seeing that old rock paintings, trying to imagine the life 4000 years ago. Trying to understand what these paintings means. It is very important that we have still these paintings and information about the history.
