Midnight Shift (1/?)
Pairings: eventual Logicality
Summary: Logan is a shapeshifter. Patton doesn't know. What will happen when Patton walks in on Logan shifting one day?
Warnings: none so far
A/N: This might be a series? It depends on how much I can think of to write for it
Shifters were a thing of fiction, they had taught. Of fantasy novels and superhero comics- something you might find in a children's story. Not sitting in a bedroom on the second floor of an apartment complex, cramming for his astronomy final.
Logan threw down the textbook with a resigned sigh, looking up at the clock. 1:32 it read, in blinking red lights.
I should probably get some sleep, huh?
As he reached out to turn off his desk lamp, Logan's stomach let out a low growl. He paused, letting his hand come back down to rest on the desk.
...maybe- maybe just a snack, before bed, He thought. Patton doesn't have to know. I can be quiet.
And besides, a smaller part of him said. You can control your shifting better with a full stomach and a rested mind.
Logan didn't know why he could Shift. He didn't know why the ability developed, why no one else seemed to know anything about it. Why it had been so hard to control. It was just a part of him at this point, a trivial thing. Like the color of his clothes, or the way he could write just fine with either hand.
All he knew was that people never reacted well.
He shook the thought out of his head, standing up and heading for the door. Now now, no time for those thoughts. Get your snack and get to bed.
He slunk out of his room, stepping extra lightly as he passed Patton's door. There was no reason to have him up at this hour.
Logan managed to make it to the kitchen uninterrupted, a smile pulling at the corner of his lips as he pulled open the fridge. They needed to go grocery shopping soon, but inside sat a decent amount of food- fruit, some sandwich meats, a block of cheese...
"Aha! Crofter's," Logan whispered, reaching for the jar. "Maybe I'll make some toast.."
Logan shut the fridge, spinning around on his heel to walk towards the fridge. However, a sudden movement in the doorway made him jump, nearly dropping the jam and ruining his whole escapade.
"...Logan?" Patton mumbled, rubbing his eyes. "What're you doing..?"
"Er.. just grabbing a midnight snack," He said. "I- my apologies, if I woke you up. I tried to stay quiet."
"S'okay. 'M just getting some water."
Logan nodded, letting the half-sleeping man walk past him to the sink before popping a piece of bread in the toaster. He tapped his foot as he waited for it to cook, turning back around to face Patton.
He had gotten his cup of water, and was now sipping at it while staring quizzically at Logan.
"..hey, Lo?" He asked. "..is that- is that a tail..?"
"..what?"
Patton pointed to something just behind and below Logan, slowly raising an eyebrow. Logan looked down, all the blood rushing out of his face when he saw that he did, indeed, have a tail.
"...Logan?"
He didn't respond, staring in horror at Patton for a moment before bolting out of the room. All sense of stealth was forgotten as he sprinted back to his room, slamming and locking the door behind him. Logan shut his eyes, sliding down the back of the door until he was sitting on the ground with his head in his arms. He forced the tail away, wincing only slightly as it disappeared with a pinch.
Please let him forget it, Logan thought, struggling to take a deep breath. Please let him think it was a dream.. please- please let me stay this time...
Midnight Shift (2/?)
Pairings: eventual Logicality
Warnings: Lying
A/N: Damn, y'all really liked the first chapter huh??? I'm glad you enjoyed my late night writing, and hope you continue to enjoy the next few chapters~
Patton had not forgotten.
Logan had found that out soon enough. He had woken up still slumped against the door, his neck sore from the uncomfortable position. He'd thoroughly inspected himself before heading downstairs, making sure he wasn't shifted at all. Again.
Patton, of course, was already awake. A small stack of waffles sat on a plate on the counter, the bottle of syrup open next to it. Patton himself was sitting at the table, digging in.
He looked up as Logan trudged into the kitchen. "Morning, Lo!"
Logan mumbled a greeting as he grabbed a waffle, spreading some jam from the Crofter's jar he had left out the night before over it. He took a bite and sat down across from Patton, letting out a sigh.
Everything seemed fine. Normal. Until Patton popped the question.
"So... what happened last night?"
Logan decided to play dumb. "What do you mean?"
"You, and.." Patton pointed his fork at him. "..the tail?"
"What tail?"
"You had some kinda cat tail. I tried to ask you about it, but you ran away."
"..nonsense." Logan took another bite of waffle. "I was in my room all night studying. You must've had a dream."
"...yeah. I- I guess so."
The look on Patton's face broke Logan's heart, but he couldn't let his roommate know what he was. Not yet. He wasn't ready for that confrontation again.
Logan quickly finished his waffle, heading back to his room to change before class. Although he was still technically dressed, he didn't particularly want to wear the same clothes in public two days in a row.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Logan could barely focus in class that day. From the moment he sat down, he was already ready to leave. The incident from last night- and now, Patton's questions -had put him on edge, and it was always easier to just hide away when his emotions got intense. There was less of a chance of being exposed that way, as shifting tended to happen more naturally when he got overly emotional.
As soon as the bell that dismissed them rang, Logan grabbed his stuff and all but ran out of the lecture hall. He didn't take a deep breath until he was walking up to his apartment building, his notes shoved back into the safety of his backpack.
If everything was going according to schedule, Patton would still be out when he got back- either at work, getting groceries, or hanging out with Roman.
It would be better if he wasn't home. Logan could take the time to calm down, reset the mask on his emotions.
So naturally, Patton just had to be sitting on the couch, watching a movie when Logan unlocked the door.
"Welcome back," he said cheerfully. "How was class, Lo?"
Logan's heart skipped a beat, but he managed to keep his voice level. "...It was alright. I, er- I have quite the workload today, though, so.."
Maybe if he thinks I'm busy, he'll leave me alone. I won't have to deal with-
"Aww.. again?" Patton turned, concern clear on his face. "Do- do you at least want to grab something to eat before you have to..? Or- or maybe you could do it down here..!"
"Are there any waffles left?"
"Yeah, there should be one or two in the fridge."
"That'll have to do," Logan said, heading into the kitchen. He kept his eyes forward, not watching as Patton's face fell.
"...oh. Okay. Well, see you in a-"
Patton was cut off as Logan grabbed a waffle, still cold from the fridge, and sped to his bedroom.
"...while."
Logan tossed his backpack into the corner of his room, taking a bite from the waffle and falling back onto his bed. He could feel his neck prickle where feathers had begun to shift out, reacting to his stress. He reached up and rubbed at them for a moment, forcing them to disappear once more.
It was several hours later when a knock came to Logan's door, startling him out of his study. He stood up, taking a few deep breaths before pulling the door open. "...yes?"
Patton stood in the doorway, picking at a string on the hem of his shirt.
"I- I just came to check on you," he said. "To make sure you're okay. I know that around finals you usually get stressed out, but I figured maybe I could bring you some food or offer a distraction for a while or something. To- to take your mind off things."
Logan blinked. "I- uhm.."
He looked back at the papers strewn over his desk, little scribbles filling them from corner to corner.
Maybe.. maybe I should take a break.
"...okay. Let me- let me put away my homework and then I'll come out."
Patton's face lit up. "Okay!"
Logan smiled, shutting the door and turning back to his work. He hastily scooped it into a pile, setting the papers on the corner of his desk. It was a mess, and he'd regret it later, but it would be fine for now.
He walked out of the bedroom and down the hall, where Patton was waiting, once again, on the couch. He patted the seat next to him, waiting for Logan to sit down.
Logan rolled his eyes and sat down by his roommate, leaning up against the arm of the couch. "So? What do you plan to distract me with?"
"Well..." Patton rubbed the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly. "..I never thought I'd get this far, to be honest. We could- we could watch a movie? Or an episode of something, if you don't want to take that long..?"
"Either works."
"Okay!"
Patton grabbed the tv remote, flipping to Disney channel (of course). The two watched for a few minutes, but Logan found himself oddly restless. He kept glancing up at the clock, waiting for the episode to be over. I need to get my work done, and if I don't I'll be stressed and when I'm stressed I shift and-
"...You- you doing okay, Lo?" Patton asked, interrupting his thoughts. "If- if you need to go finish your work, then.. I- you can go.."
Logan nodded, standing up with a sigh of relief. He gave Patton an apologetic look before hurrying back to his room.
As soon as the door was locked, Logan turned to look in the mirror- something he usually wouldn't have cared to keep in his room. He could see the feathers had decided to make themself known again, this time creeping up along the sides of his face as well as across his neck.
I can't let Patton see me like this, he thought. Especially not when I already have finals to worry about.
The time for distractions was over. Logan sat down at his desk, getting back to work on his papers. If he was going to make it through the rest of the year, he was going to have to stay focused.
If that meant avoiding Patton until they were over, no matter how much it hurt the both of them, then so be it.
Midnight Shift (4/?)
Pairings: Logicality
Warnings: Self doubt, mild panic
A/N: I am so sorry this took so long to get out ajdbajxbjabxjsbx I haven't abandoned it don't worry
The rest of that day was nothing but a hazy blur to Logan. He vaguely remembered Patton waking him up, making him drink something warm. But other than that- nothing. Just restless sleep in a bed that wasn't his own.
Eventually, he woke up to Patton feeling his forehead, immediately jumping back as Logan stirred.
"Pat-" he croaked.
"Shhhshh, it's okay," Patton said, letting out a sigh of relief. "How- how you feeling, Lo..?"
"Awful," Logan said, struggling to sit up. "I- I need to get back to-"
"Hey, hey, hey," Patton said, gently pushing him back down. "You don't need to get back to anything. You need rest."
"But- but I..." He narrowed his eyes. "...how- how did I get in your room?"
"Er..." Patton looked away. "..your- your room wasn't exactly in- in the best condition, so..."
"..what was wrong with my..."
Logan trailed off as he realized that his room was probably still covered in feathers, none of which he could reasonably explain. Which had to mean that Patton had seen them- had seen him, again, which meant that Logan's cover was blown, that he would have to move again and-
"Hey- hey! Logan, it- it's okay," Patton said, cutting into his thoughts. "I don't mind if your room is a mess, it's okay. Deep- deep breaths, okay? Deep breaths.."
"You- you went- you saw-" Logan looked up at his roommate. "You saw-.. and you- you're not..?"
Patton tilted his head, raising an eyebrow. "...not what?"
"You're not.. you aren't scared?"
"Lo, why would I be scared? I'm not afraid of a messy bedroom," he said, letting out a nervous laugh.
"Not of my bedroom, Pat. Of- of me.."
Patton went quiet for a moment, his eyes straying down to the floor. He slowly sat down on the bed, taking Logan's hand.
"...I don't have a reason to be scared of you, Lo. If- if anything, I was scared for you."
"But-" Logan's face flushed as Patton grabbed his hand. "But I- you- you don't think I'm a... a monster?"
"...Logan, the most monstrous thing you've ever done is eat two jars of Crofters in one sitting," Patton smiled. "My- my view on you isn't going to change just because you have.. an unusual ability."
"..really?"
"Really. If anything, I think it's amazing. You're like a.. a superhero, or something out of a fantasy book!"
Logan blinked, struggling to process what his roommate had just said. Interesting choice of metaphor. "..so you- you don't think it's.. bad?"
"Of course not."
Patton leaned forward, pressing his lips to Logan's forehead before pushing the man back down onto the pillow.
"Now, enough negative talk. You need to rest, and I am going to make sure you get some if it's the last thing I do."
Logan just nodded, his head reeling. As Patton stood up to go make some tea, he brought a hand up to his forehead, which still burned with warmth where Patton had kissed him. Logan smiled.
He... he accepts me..
Midnight Shift (3/?)
Pairings: Logicality, bg platonic Prinxiety
Warnings: sickness, being sick, self neglect, blacking out
For the next three days, Patton barely saw Logan. Other than their rushed breakfasts each day, he would hide away in his room, working on homework whenever Patton was around. It worried him, especially since he knew that Logan could get easily carried away and stay up all night if he had to.
But all the while, Patton could not get over what he had saw. Or, what he'd thought he'd seen, apparently. It felt so real, for a dream..
On the third day, Patton finally cracked while he was hanging out with Roman.
"You alright, Pat?" He had said. "You seem.. off. You aren't as bright as usual."
Patton smiled, though somewhat sadly. "Yeah, I'm okay. I'm just.. worried."
"About what?"
"My roommate, Logan. He's got finals coming up, and- and he's been spending all day in his room. I mean all day."
"He's probably just cramming," Roman pointed out, leaning back and taking a sip of his coffee. "I used to do the same thing."
Patton raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you drop out?"
"That's not the point. Is.. that really all you're worried about?"
"I- I guess.." Patton said. "He- he doesn't come out to eat or anything though. And- and the other night..."
Roman looked intrigued, sitting up straight. "Oh? Is there tea to be spilled?"
"I just- I got up to get water and he was in the kitchen- that's normal, for him at least. But he was acting all weird, and he-"
"He what?"
Patton bit his cheek, glancing down. He decided to leave out the part about Logan appearing to have a tail.
"He saw me and he ran. He didn't even take his toast with him- I had to throw it out the next morning. When I brought it up again, he just avoided the topic and rushed out the door."
Patton sighed, but looked up, bewildered, as Roman chuckled.
"Have you considered that maybe there's something he's afraid to tell you?" He teased. "Something along the lines of.. oh, I don't know... a crush?"
Patton's face got hot, and he knew that he was turning redder than Roman's jacket. "I- no, he- we-"
Roman laughed, setting his coffee down on the table. "Look. Just try talking to the guy tonight, if you're so worried. It'll be fine!"
"I-" Patton cleared his throat. "..yeah. Thanks, Ro. Tell Virgil I said hi!"
"Can do, as always, Pat."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later, when Patton got home, he went directly to Logan's room, taking a deep breath before knocking on the door.
There was no response- not unusual, but still unsettling. Patton knocked again. "...Lo? You doing okay, bud..?"
A mumbled response came from behind the door, making him sigh in relief.
"Can I come in?"
For a moment, Patton was met with silence, making his heart skip a beat. Then the door was pulled open, an extremely tired Logan looking up at him.
"What do you need?" He asked, pushing up his glasses. Patton could see dark circles under his eyes.
"I- I just wanted to.." Patton stammered. "Logan, are- are you okay..?"
"I'm fine," he snapped. "I'm just- busy. I'm busy."
"Lo.. How- how about you come take a break? Just- for a few minutes, at least? Please?"
"Patton, I have a lot of work to do before class, I just-" Logan suddenly started coughing, nearly doubling over as he tried to hide it. "..let me- let me finish."
"Are- are you sick?" Patton asked. "When- when was the last time you slept..?"
"That- that's not important."
"Uh, yes, it is!" He protested. "Please, Logan, just.. come out, for a minute. You need rest."
Logan mumbled something in reply before another coughing fit started, making him lose his grip on the door. Patton took the opportunity to push it open all the way, gently grabbing Logan's wrist.
His room was a disaster- books were strewn across the floor, crumpled up papers sat in a pile around his trash can, and oddly, little brown feathers were scattered around the room.
Patton didn't pay any of that much attention, supporting Logan as he struggled to take a breath.
"Lo, come on. You are going to get some rest now." He said firmly. "No buts."
"But-"
"What did I just say?" Patton asked, slowly dragging Logan out the door.
Logan pushed away from Patton, stumbling a few steps before falling to the ground. His face was flushed, and Patton could see something sticking up under the collar of his shirt.
"Get- get out," he spat. "..please."
"...Lo..?"
"Patton, please."
Logan met his eyes, determination shining bright before he slumped back against his desk. Patton stared in shock for only a moment before rushing forward, putting a hand to his roommate's forehead.
"You idiot," he said softly, grabbing Logan under the arms and hoisting him to his feet. "You are sick. And I'm sorry, but I'm going to take care of you.."
Patton trailed off as he noticed the things under Logan's collar again- which, up close, looked suspiciously similar to the feathers littering the room around them.
He adjusted so that he could hold Logan with one arm before reaching up and pulling his shirt away from his neck.
Patton gasped as his suspicions were confirmed. Logan's neck and shoulders were covered in fine brown feathers, tangled together similarly to his hair. He noticed that they had spread along his hairline as well, and were creeping up the side of Logan's face.
...is this why he was hiding? This, and- and the tail!
Patton shook his head, dispelling the thought. Right now, his friend was sick. And he needed Patton.
Patton picked up Logan bridal style, carrying him down the hall to his own room. He pushed the door open with his foot, laying his roommate down on the bed.
"When you're feeling better, we have some catching up to do," Patton said softly. "What's going on with you, Lo?"

Doodled a Logan from Chapter 3-
