shapeshifter whumper who tortures whumpee while wearing the faces of their loved ones. they come to fear those they used to love. whumper is a good actor. they know how to act just right, chip away at whumpee's sanity and esteem until all that's left of them is terror and pleas for mercy.
when they are rescued, they can't bear to look at anyone. "GO AWAY!" they end up yelling at some point. they can't look in the mirror. their own face terrifies them to no end. they want to wipe their mind clean. they want to change themselves so intrinsically that only a phantom would remain behind.
caretaker is someone new, though. it is the one silver lining of the entire fiasco. they like to look at this new face, a novelty after the years of staring at the same roster of people. it is good, almost. they get better, and on good days, they can bear to glimpse at themselves in the mirror.
and then, they get recaptured. whumper couldn't pass up the golden opportunity— a new face! they learn all they can about caretaker, and then saunter in their living space, all relaxed edges and suggest an outing. whumpee goes along easily.
until they fall asleep in the cab, and wake up to find themselves strapped down on the rack they've dearly hated all these years. they want it to be a dream. they desperately want this to be a dream— like countless they've had before, but whumper keeps going and going and going and there's no one coming for them. no one at all. they pass out and they wake up in the same hellish place. no amount of pain breaks their reality.
this isn't a dream, they think numbly, there is no waking up.
