SAY HER FUCKING NAME!
I'm sitting here reading articles about Coretta Scott King and her letter and her movement and so on. But in so many articles they just refer to her as "King, the widowed wife of Martin Luther King Jr." They never use her full name. Just mention who she was married to. And this is it. Even in a moment where she, and her word, are so important, so monumental, we can't even say her name. And this is why we don't progress. Because black women pulling the weight of the world and moving mountains, don't recieve the recognition our male counterparts do. We can't argue our value, our intelligence, our accomplishments, etc., as an entire community and culture, if half of the effort isn't included in the argument or even mentioned. There are black women out here that people want to see in the goddamned whitehouse. But I fear no one will know the efforts and achievements of Michelle Obama. I fear strong accomplished women like her who fight everyday to change the world - and achieve great change may I add - will just become Obama, wife of Barack Obama - first Black President of the United States. Our children won't learn about her, or at least not nearly to the extent that we learn about Barack. We won't learn about the Black mothers who organized, created, and gained media attention for Black Lives Matter. We won't learn about First Nations mothers in Canada who are the only one's that care about the hundreds, if not thousands, of Native girls and women that go missing here every year. The mothers that need our support more than ever, to help heal a community that has NEVER been given a chance to heal. They carry the burden of saving their people, that are still being killed off and marginalized in a way that not a black person could wrap their heads around. ( Yes, I said it but it's true ). So can we say her name and the name of so many others? Please? Because I need to learn and I need to know. I need this knowledge. Most importantly, if we can start doing this, we can ACTUALLY start to see change.
