Thanks to the drone for catching this absolutely awesome start to the morning 😍 right out next to our reef too!!
This big guy is a whale shark, and (despite the name) they’re not whales at all. They’re actually the largest species of fish in the world! These gentle giants can grow up to 40 feet long, sometimes even bigger. And, get this, they’re filter feeders, which means they don’t hunt like other sharks. Instead, they swim around with their huge mouths wide open, filtering plankton, small fish, and squid from the 🌊
One of the coolest things about whale sharks is their unique pattern of spots and stripes. It’s like a fingerprint, totally unique to each individual 🦈 Scientists use these patterns to identify and track them over time, which helps us learn about their migration routes and behavior. They’re very secretive - we still don’t know a huge amount about their breeding behaviours or their young! 🥹
Besides being amazing creatures to see, whale sharks play a pretty important role in the ocean ecosystem 🌱 Since they feed on plankton, they help keep plankton populations balanced. That’s crucial because plankton forms the base of the marine food web; supporting everything from tiny fish to big predators!
